We all know that our food manufacturing is one of the largest industries in the world. Food at this level of consciousness is an absolute necessity for life. The way we grow, harvest, transport, transform, buy and sell our foods is completely different than 100 years ago. So where do we get our food? Not farms anymore… more like industrial factories. Here’s a few more facts on “7 foods that should never cross your lips”
A Endocrinologist won’t eat canned tomatoes. An endocrinologist studies the glands and hormone levels of the body and the effects they have. So why no canned tomatoes u ask? Cans are lined with a resin that contains bisphenol A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Remember all the BPA jazz with the plastic containers? Well its been hiding in our cans, at dangerous levels, 50 mcg of BPA per liter. Try using organic tomatoes, boil and peel, then crush into your tomato sauce… or buy something that’s in a glass jar.
Corn Fed Beef
Other than the fact that soy and corn production is the largest produced food on the planet, and that its in over 90% of foods in your local grocery store… they all feed to the animals we eat. The problem is, cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. We feed them grains so they can be fattened faster and cheaper for slaughter. Its unfortunate that more money for farmers and lower prices at the grocery store means a lot less nutrition for us. Feeding cattle grains has severe problems with their digestive systems, resulting in e-coli. Because of this… the burgers you buy at the local fast food joint, are rinsed with Ammonia. Yuck. A recent study found that grass fed cattle is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium. So if your going to eat beef (if though your digestive system isn’t designed for it) go ask your butcher for grass fed, or specialty marked products.
Another family favourite. Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize — and migrate into your popcorn. These chemicals stay in your body for years, and that’s how cancer creeps up. They are trying to ban the use, but millions of bags will be popped by them. An easy way to avoid: pop your own. Corn kernels are very cheap (see paragraph above), and can easily by popped at home. Use some oil in a pot on the stove. As if the microwave radiation wasn’t a good enough reason.
Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes — the nation’s most popular vegetable — they’re treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. Even some potato growers won’t eat the potatoes they grow. You have to grow them or buy them organically.
Farm Raised Salmon
This one is tricky. Salmon are packed into pens, fed soy, poultry litter and hydrolyzed chicken feathers, which result in lower vitamin D, and higher contaminants including carcinogens, dioxins and DDT. DDT leads to diabetes and obesity, and some experts say the cons outweigh the pros (omega-3s). Not the mention the high levels of antibiotics and pesticides use to treat the fish and keep them alive. What they eat, you end up eating. Try to find wild-farmed salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic, it’s farmed. Apparently canned Salmon is all wild catch, not farmed.
You saw this one coming. Milk producers have to treat their cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH, rBST) to boost milk production (thanks to Monsanto). These chemicals also increase udder infections and pus in the milk. Yummy isn’t it? There have been countless amount of lawsuits to ban the use of these chemicals all over the world. Again… go organic and check your labels.
Apples are probably the most pesticide exposed foods on our tables. They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavour. Because of this apples don’t develop a resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. Try to go organic, or wash and peel.
Take all of these as information, and with them, do as you please. I feel as we move forward, more integrity will return to our food, and that more people will take a liking into learning about their food. Learning how its grown, and how-to grow. Food and water are a very sacred connection we have with Gaia, and that should be appreciated and respected. Remember, you are what you eat!
