How many times have we heard someone say “You’re young, you don’t know what the world is like yet.” “Maybe when you get older you will understand.” I think it’s safe to say that at some point we have all heard this from someone our own age or more typically from someone older, maybe an authority figure.
How did it feel when you heard this being told to you? What was the context in which it was used? The truth is, these beliefs of age and understanding this world is completely a belief system and most of the time this statement is used to defend ones own view or instill some sort of disempowerment. Of course most of this is done unconsciously, but the fact is, it is a piece of programming many of us have that limits the way we view individuals and their own experience. In many ways, it also cut the bridge of what people of different ages can learn from one another.
Let’s for a second broaden our scope a bit and realize that we are all having our own experience and each one is perfect and different in its own way. In every case, we all see the world in a different way whether it be drastically different or slightly. What is this difference based on? Generally, it’s nothing more than what we have been taught, our culture and what we have agreed to accept as conditions in this world. Anything from how we should dress to what the definition of successful is. The important part here is, the definitions and limits we have accepted are simply an illusion and perceptions. None of them are real, there is no right or wrong way to dress, there is no such thing as someone being successful and someone not being successful. We have simply bought into a belief made up by someone that the world is a certain way and there are certain conditions, this could not be further from the truth.
How does age tie in? Well, every soul is the EXACT same age, no soul is older or younger.Whether you view it as a big bang in creation or an instant fragmentation of consciousness, all souls were fragmented at the exact same time so there is no such thing as “an old soul.” Age also does not determine the level of conditioning or programming any of us have. Someone who is in their fifties does not have to abide by or be a part of any belief that the masses may have generally accepted, and age isn’t going to bring them into any realization that “this is how it is.” Similarly, a person in their teens does not have to begin to work within the system and have a mortgage and kids to realize what kind of emotions and responsibilities it would create. They do not have to be a part of the system to see, know and understand how it all works. While most of us have bought into the fact that we MUST experience it or see it to understand it, this is simply a belief as well.
When someone uses the saying “when you are older you will understand, you’re just too young?” The individual is simply stating “Based on my experience I believe you do not understand this world. Regardless of your own conscious awareness, I THINK you do not understand something because I BELIEVE that you can only understand it at a certain age.” It is important to bring this up because all to often we are hearing and seeing this used to discredit what many young people are sharing at this time. Instead of them not understanding the world at hand, is it possible that they are coming in with a different level of understanding? A different consciousness and awareness of what we are and what this world can be? I feel that is precisely what is taking place here.
I feel it is important for us to see and understand, that no one needs to be defined by age and age is not a factor of what someone knows and can see. It is not a factor of their wisdom. Every individual is having their own experience and we are all experiencing different levels of knowing and understanding of our true selves. We can then ask, what is the use in judging and basing our thoughts on something that simply limits and defines something as absolute when it’s not? This isn’t about pointing out right or wrong, its only to point out and observe what’s really playing out through our perceptions, so we can see more easily that we have set up so many boxes and limits that are based on nothing real. Think of how much broader our level of sharing amongst each other can become if we open up our learning from people of all physical ages.
