9 Dirty Secrets the Meat Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know

Last year, Big Ag and the food industry in general had successfully lobbied legislation in some states to prohibit undercover photos and videos from being taken of factory farming livestock scenarios and disallowed mainstream media outlets from receiving and displaying those photos or videos.

Fortunately, the outcry from many different sources, including mainstream media, First Amendment and food consumer activists, those “Animal Facility Interference” or “Ag Gag” laws were quickly repealed. Yet they are “creeping back,” according to a report onAlterNet.

Nine examples of what the public isn’t supposed to know

(1) Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH):It’s injected into cows to force more milk production. Monsanto created it by combining cow DNA and E. coli (really). Now Eli Lily owns it.

It infects cows’ udders, causing gross malformations and demands a plethora of antibiotic injections which furthers the creation of antibiotic resistant superbugs. It also leaves small amounts of pus in consumers’ milk.

For a few years, farmers who labeled their milk “no rBGH” were harassed with “legal actions” by Monsanto. That level of free speech has been halted, yet rBGH treated milk is not labeled.

(2) Toxic drugs in meat:The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has determined that meat inspectors lack the wherewithal to find certain toxic drug residues in meats from factory farming. Parasites and bacteria can be cooked out. Drugs and heavy metals can’t be cooked out.

(3) Gourmet meats:Calves are placed into tiny crates to prevent any movement then slaughtered before full maturity. Their muscles aren’t developed, so their tender meat is served as veal.

Despite images of geese and ducks with bleeding throats struggling to breathe and barely able to walk, force feeding fowl to create the bloated liver “delicacy” known as foie gras continues in the USA.

(4) Salmonella:The perpetrator of the most recent huge egg salmonella outbreak, Jack DeCoster, only had to recall a half-billion eggs after causing 1600 illnesses.

He wasn’t shut down or arrested or fined despite the atrocious disease potential conditions of hen houses that are common among egg producers, including Tyson Foods. Instead of creating better conditions, they just inject the hens with more antibiotics.

(5) Antibiotics:Speaking of antibiotics, 70 percent of existing antibiotics are injected into livestock. The consumed meat brings antibiotics into human bodies. Added to this factor is the overuse of antibiotics for humans. The result is more antibiotic resistance and superbugs such as MRSA.

(6) Extreme growth promoters:The EU doesn’t allow antibiotics or extreme growth promoters to be used on livestock. The USDA is all for it. Even arsenic is allowed to make chickens grow bigger, faster. Enjoy your chicken wings.

 (7) HACCP:Stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. It actually restricts meat inspectors by leaving it up to the companies to assure the cleanliness and safety of their meats.The inspectors come around to check on whether they’re doing the quality control methods those companies had proposed, yet they wind up having to look the other way as they push out contaminated meat.(8) Mad Cow:It came, it went, and it’s back again according to the report posted onAlterNet. The EU banned beef imports from the U.S. when the first mad cow episode occurred.

Mad cow results from mixing cow parts in with cattle feed, causing the neurodegenerative disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) that can also contaminate humans.

(9) Cloned livestock:The FDA and USDA claim there is no difference between cloned and natural livestock, so it needn’t be labeled. This reasoning mimics GMO and rBGH non labeling issues. Monsanto really does control the FDA and USDA.

  3. There are hundreds of food clubs in America where you can buy dairy, eggs and meat from humanely-raised, properly fed animals and the farms those animals come from dramatically improve the land.

    They just need more customers to expand. Buying from them will do more to improve human health and the environment outside our bodies than anything I can think of.

    Toxins are in animal products solely to bring the price down.

    While former Monsanto folks have always populated the FDA and other governmental agencies….our current president has hired the most…. would suggest you do as much home gardening and raising your own chickens and bees…and try your best to avoid pesticides and the like…even if you raise potatoes and cabbages in pots on your porch….at least you are doing something…

    Once upon a time, my mom suggested I order veal at some fancy Italian restaurant. I was maybe 7 at the time. About a year later, I found out that veal wasn’t just some fancy word for cow… aside from being one of the final straws to my never eating meat again, it was perplexing to me that she would suggest I eat something with such a gut-wrenching backstory.

    Not super topical, but the article reminded me…
    it’s just strange to me how disconnected lots of folks are from their food, or in denial of where it comes from/what goes into it.

    dont eat beef..dont eat any food that is geneticly modified…corn is one.cows are loaded with steriods to make them grow faster. why do you think we are much larger now.

I learned so much of this in my 20′s while studying Naturopathy in Australia ..now in my 60′s I am totally dumbfounded that these practices have been allowed not only to continue but have become even more toxic ???? So much $$ is required for Cancer research …a direct link to this toxic food, can they not use that $$ for sustainable farming….and eat like nature intended….just crazy greed…

    Way back when the FDA was created, it was done to protect consumers from the very crimes that it covers and protects now.
    All for the green backed greed. If more people realised that our “greenbacks” are no longer a sound monetary system, and that some form of “exchange” is just as good as the Monopoly money that originally was used in lieu of carrying gold/silver, we would be able to stop the runnaway FDA’s assgreasing and again become the public advocates that this country originally created it for.

    @judi – the ecoli is used as a vehicle in the process of manufacturing growth hormones…same for human growth hormones. The ecoli itself is not injected or in the final finished product. It is also used in make many other medications for humans. Almost like penicillin is made and grown using fungus.

    Rarely do I eat any meat and if I do its all from local organic small farms, people need to stop supporting these big faceless corporations that care about money more than the health of their customers. Its super easy to find local organic suppliers for meat or eggs or even honey. Ask lots of questions about how they raise their animals and if they are certified organic and most of them will even let you visit their farm and see for yourself. Id be sketched out if they wouldn’t

    I remember as a kid in the news them promising never to allow gm foods well let’s face it practically everything we eat has been modified in one way or another look how many people are dying of cancer now I blame the foods

    I find it a little hard to take anything seriously that quotes wikipidea. I mean yes there are hormones in our food, but do you know whats in your water? Its worse I will tell you that, and if people are concerned look into organic local farmers…..oh wait that cost a little more that a mcdonalds burgar….see people make the choice to eat cheaper quality if you are willing to pay more you never have to worry about what is in your meat, or go hunting nothing like fresh venison.

    A book by David Wilcock (Source Field investigations) discusses how Dr Weston Price found that many traditional, undisturbed culture had much higher bone density from eating their native foods. Their teeth stayed straight, no need for orthodontics & they hardly ever got cavities-even without brushing. As soon as processed white flour, non organic dairy and factory farmed meats, their teeth became crooked and began to rot out of their heads.Their are many reason to go back to a pure, natural diet….preventive maintenance for sure!

  26. Read The China Study by Colin Campbell as to what meat and dairy does to our bodies. Don’t be put off by the unscientific criticism of this book, especially from Denise Minger. Her critique is flawed.

    Don’t be so naive. It’s the same in the production of crops…hormones, drug usage, and cloning, etc. And some of the worst, most corrupt offenders are “Organic” growers.

    So what are we supposed to do? I have a family to feed we like to eat meat. How do I avoid strange clone meat, and poison meat?

      One easy way Danya is to go for a ride in the country. Look for a small farm with a small herd. Talk to the farmer. Ask questions about drugs, hormones, what is the cow fed (grass or grain), look around the farm and barn. It may seem like a lot of work, and it is, but there are a lot of farmers who will gladly sell you a quarter, a half, or the whole cow. Processing allows YOU to decide how you want it cut up. How much burger do you want and what ratio..70%, 80%, , how many steaks, roasts, your favorite cut do you want? I’m from Kansas City and I can tell you there are plenty of local farmers that DON”T abuse, inject and mistreat their herds, and they are more than happy to let you pick your steer out of the herd so you KNOW where your beef came from.

  31. I am vegan now and I feel great! My whole attitude is changed. I respect all earthlings. Our teeth are not made to eat meat, like a tiger or lion with fangs. Our teeth are straight like a horses, for example and they eat grains and vegtables too. All we do is cut out any milk or meat products, everything is pretty much the same.
