Can a Single Plant Solve Many of Our Problems?

What if we had a readily available technology that could provide both protein-rich food, super-insulated building materials, strong fibres, paper and even concrete, would you want to know what this plant is? Well, there are actually two plants capable of this but today we are going to look at Kenaf Note: Kenaf is not Hemp but is very similar in many ways.

Retired building contractor, Bill Loftus, has come upon a brilliant application of the fast-growing, carbon-sucking plant known as Kenaf. Kenaf is in the Hibiscus family and is thus related to both cotton and okra. Originally from Africa, this 4,000-year-old crop was used for its fiber. It has the astonishing ability to grow up to 14 feet in one growing season, yielding 6-10 tons of fiber per acre and making it a great source of pulp for paper.

While Global Warming as relates to our production C02 is not a real threat, Kenaf has the ability to inhale large quantities of the gas. So even if one were to argue C02 needs to be reduced, here is your solution. Kenaf is capable of absorbing 3-8 times more CO2 than a tree. One acre of Kenaf can pull about 10 tons of CO2 out of the air per growing season, and in some parts of the world it can be cut back and regrown for a second season. With proper management, a single acre planted in Kenaf could absorb 20 tons of CO2.

Bill Loftus having worked for decades in the green building industry, realized the abundant fiber of the Kenaf plant would be perfect as a filler to produce light-weight, super-insulating, fireproof concrete blocks as well as many other strong ropes and twines.

The block weighs under 9 lbs, and is currently being used it in two pilot projects in Haiti and South Africa, areas that have been hard hit by natural disasters and famine.

Kenaf has been used as a cordage crop to produce twine, rope, and sackcloth for over six millennia (Dempsey 1975). Kenaf was first domesticated and used in northern Africa. India has produced and used kenaf for the last 200 years, while Russia started producing kenaf in 1902 and introduced the crop to China in 1935 (Dempsey 1975). In the United States, kenaf research and production began during World War II to supply cordage material for the war effort (Wilson et al. 1965). The war not only interrupted the foreign fiber supplies from countries such as the Philippines, but the US involvement in the war also increased the use of these fibers by the US. Once it was determined that kenaf was a suitable crop for US production, research was initiated to maximize US kenaf yields. Asa result, scientists successfully developed high-yielding anthracnose-resistant cultivars, cultural practices, and harvesting machinery that increased fiber yields (Nieschlag et al. 1960; Wilson et al. 1965; White et al. 1970). Then in the 1950s and early 1960s, as USDA researchers were evaluating various plant species to fulfill future fiber demands in the US, it was determined that kenaf was an excellent cellulose fiber source for a large range of paper products (newsprint, bond paper, and corrugated liner board). It was also determined that pulping kenaf required less energy and chemical inputs for processing than standard wood sources (Nelson et al. 1962). More recent research and development work in the 1990s has demonstrated the plant’s suitability for use inbuilding materials (particle boards of various densities, thicknesses, with fire and insect resistance), adsorbents, textiles, livestock feed, and fibers in new and recycled plastics (injected molded and extruded) (Webber and Bledsoe 1993).

Researchers from Burkina Faso and France have developed a low-cost construction material made of clay and sand mixed with fibres from the kenaf plant.Kenaf is member of the cotton family, and its fibres are already widely used in Burkina Faso to make bags and ropes, as well as other products typically made from wood, like paper.Jacob Sanou, of the Farako-Ba research station of Bobo-Dioulasso, in Burkina Faso, says he was inspired to try using kenaf to make building materials by the flax plant, which Europeans have used in a wide range of products including clothing, paper and industrial products. To learn about Hemp which is also a very powerful plant in solving many of our issues, please read this article 5 Ways Hemp Will Change Our World

Global warming as relates to our production of co2 is NOT a problem??? Are you crazy?

    • Lauren Zook

co2 does contribute to global warming Sara MacCalman. Do some research first before you call people crazy.

    Hi Sara,

There is a great deal of misconception out there about how much C02 humans actually produce. The numbers released by governmental and private agencies on this matter have widely mislead people for their own financial gain. They have been caught in the act several times but the mass population continues to be mislead. If you like, refer to a previous article on this topic that I put together after much research. http://www.collective-evolution.com/2011/12/22/the-global-warming-myth-%E2%80%9Chumanity-causes-global-warming%E2%80%9D/

    Thanks!

    You are nuts.

Interesting article, and I agree on the global warming/man-made CO2 issue. The general population has been seriously duped for a long time and the dupers have just gotten richer and richer.

  5. global warming discussions aside…. this plant looks like a wonderful alternative to hemp. I wonder if it is as versatile and nutritious. if it really is as good as hemp, then keep this quiet before it becomes illegal.

  6. global warming has replaced the church as the new religion. you global warming believers get mighty offended. just look at yourselves. you are like religious zealots.

Where in the US will kenaf grow? Is it being produced, by whom? Is the Agricultural Extension Service experimenting with it? Seems that it could help solve many problems.

  8. global warming has replaced the church as the new religion. you global warming believers get mighty offended. just look at yourselves.you are like religious zealots.

This article is about a plant, it is not about global warming. Yet there are so many people on both sides of the issue who can’t wait to bring it up because they are in love with arguing about things rather than looking at innovations that can help everyone.

Look at all the problems this plant addresses, yet cavemen can’t wait to keep whining about other people’s beliefs.. then, they claim they are “pro-business” and turn around and advocate for the socialized fossil fuel industry which is dependent on taxpayer subsidies. I am so glad people in my country are starting to see through these morons.

Can’t for the life of me understand why everyone gets so religious about the global warming hoax. Just because Al Freakin’ Gore said it? There is plenty of evidence that climate change is NOT a result of anything man has done. Numerous scientists have spoken out about this hoax, but they are mostly suppressed. Climate change-yes. Man made-No.

Declaration of Rights of Cannabis Users

Mission Statement: To bring an end to cannabis prohibition in 2013 by gathering signatory members through promotion and declaring our rights through the document, “Declaration of Rights of Cannabis Users”. Giving prohibitionists reasonable opportunity to affect appropriate, timely and agreed upon change and, if necessary enforcing our rights in a peaceful way. After April 20 2013 adopting a zero tolerance for acts of brutality and injustice by prohibitionists.

The laws regarding cannabis were born on the wings of lies and pampered by propaganda such that now the tightly held belief systems are going to have to reckon with the desire of all humanity to live with dignity, free from the oppressive tyranny that ignorance and bigotry have spawned.

@Skeezix: Majority of scientists agree that there IS climate change happening now AND that is man made. Many methods have been used to measure CO2 levels over geologic time and the record CLEARLY shows an abnormal rise since the industrial revolution (the “hockey stick”). People who claim to be scientists who skew their conclusions to comply with a political view point aren’t really scientists, they are politicians…

So what you’re saying Skeezix, Is that mankind has no impact on there Environment. Just because you have something against Al Gore doesn’t mean you need to spew crap out of your mouth. Man made climate change is a fact, take your blinders off already! I suppose you don’t believe the hole in the ozone had anything to do with us either.

  16. Please be careful when posting and responding to comments. There are trolls and shills that purposely sidetrack and cut down what would otherwise be valid, positive, and informative discussions. Try to spot them, and just ignore them, or if you have to respond, just be informative, and ignore their ego bashing and name calling. I have noticed them circling around CE a lot lately. Thanks.

Well said bob. What I find amazing is the number of people just looking for excuses as to why they can carry on polluting in gas guzzlers and living a such shallow consumer-lifestyles…Whether the global warming theory is true or not, this is our ONLY planet and look at the destruction of the environment and the chemicals that are causing problems everywhere, bee populations wiped out, our oceans full of rubbish, beautiful countryside tarmaced over and animals left with nowhere left to go…I could go on for hours. What is our goal in all this? Surely we just want to be happy, which is simply a state of mind!

We need to start respecting the planet. Even if global warming were a scam (which it obviously isn’t), it doesn’t change the fact that humans are filling a void with consumption. We need to look at ourselves and see the errors in our ways, start spending our time making the world clean again, living sustainably alongside nature and changing our perception, so we don’t need to go out and buy things to be happy. Love is the answer!

I studies conservation science a hundred years ago, and I will say this… most of what I learned about climate change, etc…was complete BS! I have learned this by doing several years of research. We are in the 6th major extinction period. Everything that is happening to the earth now, has happened before. Sure, humans cause pollution, but I believe it has nothing to do with what’s happening now. BTW…my expensive education was a NWO sponsored “education” that was 99% BS.

Humans have existed primitively on this planet for thousands of years. Whatever we did to survive a thousand years ago did not involve vehicles or factories. The concentration of pollutants today is a direct result of overzealous human technology and irresponsible management of our earth. Think about this folks… we have crammed all our greed into the last 100 or so years of evolution. There is no going back unless we collectively find solutions. I predict we will run ourselves into the ground and become primitive cave people once again. BTW, religion is a man-made concept, as is our corruption of this planet. If God exists, I think He would want us to put our attention into saving the planet from mankind’s destruction, not argue about the existence of religion.

“Sirius” is a feature length documentary that follows Dr. Steven Greer – an Emergency Medicine doctor turned UFO/ New Energy researcher – as he struggles to disclose top secret information about classified energy & propulsion techniques. Along the way, Dr. Greer investigates new technology and sheds light on criminal suppression. He accumulates over 100 Government, Military, and Intelligence Community witnesses who testify on record about their first-hand experiences with UFOs and with the cover-up.

In the course of his research Dr. Greer is asked to look at an amazing find: a humanoid specimen, 6 inches long from the Atacama Desert. Not until 2012 was he given permission to take bone samples and DNA from the specimen. At that same time a pre-eminent geneticist, hearing of this find, offered to do DNA testing. He enlisted an MD from the same university,- world renowned for his work with skeletal anomalies, to view the x-rays and CT scans. Their expertise along with Dr. Greer’s expansive knowledge of the subject bring more questions than answers. Where did this “Atacama Humanoid” come from? Are there others like it? What does it say about the origin of the human species?

While on this odyssey, the audience gains a whole new perspective on technology, human evolution, and clandestine organizations who have manipulated and controlled the public for centuries.
