10 Eye Opening Facts About Hemp

Hemp is always a fun topic to look at because it really makes you ask the obvious question: “Why are we not using this stuff for pretty much EVERYTHING that we do?” Well, the answer to that is quite simple, but not really what this article is about so we can save that for another time. What we have here is a list of  10 eye opening facts about Hemp. (There’s actually more than 10 cause some have two, but who’s counting!) Once again, HEMP does NOT get you high! Different plant.

1. 80% of all textiles, fabrics, clothes, linen, drapes, bed sheets, etc., were made from hemp until the 1820s, with the introduction of the cotton gin. All schoolbooks were made from hemp or flax paper until the 1880s.

2. Benjamin Franklin owned one of the first paper mills in America, and it processed hemp. Also, the War of 1812 was fought over hemp. Napoleon wanted to cut off Moscow’s export to England.

3. Henry Ford’s first Model-T was built to run on hemp gasoline and the car itself was constructed from hemp! On his large estate, Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. The car, ‘grown from the soil,’ had hemp plastic panels whose impact strength was 10 times stronger than steel. (Popular Mechanics, 1941.)

4. Refusing to grow hemp in America during the 17th and 18th centuries was against the law! You could be jailed in Virginia for refusing to grow hemp from 1763 to 1769. You could even pay taxes with hemp in America from 1631 until the early 1800s!! (LA Times. Aug. 12, 1981.)

5. Quality paints and varnishes were made from hemp seed oil until 1937. 58,000 tons of hemp seeds were used in America for paint products in 1935. (Sherman Williams Paint Co. testimony before the U.S.Congress against the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act.)

6. For thousands of years, 90% of all ships’ sails and rope were made from hemp. The word ‘canvas’ comes from the Middle English word “canevas” which comes from the Latin word cannabis. (Webster’s New World Dictionary.)

7. In 1938, hemp was called ‘Billion Dollar Crop.’ It was the first time a cash crop had a business potential to exceed a billion dollars. (Popular Mechanics, Feb. 1938.)

8. The first crop grown in many states was hemp. 1850 was a peak year for Kentucky producing 40,000 tons. Hemp was the largest cash crop until the 20th century.

9. In 1916, the U.S. Government predicted that by the 1940s all paper would come from hemp and that no more trees need to be cut down. Government studies report that 1 acre of hemp equals 4.1 acres of trees. Plans were in the works to implement such programs. (U.S. Department of Agriculture Archives.)

10. Oldest known records of hemp farming go back 5000 years in China, although hemp industrialization probably goes back to ancient Egypt.

I thionk we should go back to growing Hemp and save our trees. It sounds to me like Hemp is great in the making of lots of different products. It’s a shame that the government wont open their eyes to whats best for the earth to survive.

    • anne

they can’t make a lot of money from it because you can’t patent a plant and anyone can grow it

      • Yumi

Technically you cant patent a tree either, and also anyone can grow them. Lol…

      • Pam

        Tell that to Monsanto.

      • kuma

Uh, yeah you can, there’s ten’s of thousands of patents covering Cannabis alone, look it up.

      • anneofsw

Wrong. It’s done all the time. I grow flax, a similar but superior bast fibre plant, and you can only get about 3 different varieties of seed now, instead of the hundreds that used to be available – why? because commercial farms that sell the seed have patented them and don’t permit others to be available.

        • Martha Farrellbegg

You are SO very right Anneofsw…..I think that is just wrong…..not being able to get various seeds….it took me years to finally find Cherokee Tomatoes and they are very limited supply…’the BIG BOYS want to control everything…..

      • Fred

Yes the US Government does hold a patent. On October 7, 2003 The United States Government as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services was granted a U.S. Patent (#6630507) on any and all uses and applications of: Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants.

      • Hello Anne. Did you know Monsanto is patenting plants and ridding the world of heirloom/landrace/original genetics to force the agricultural world to only buy their GMO products? Yes they indeed can and do patent plants unfortunately :( Much love Anne!

the War of 1812 was fought over territory in the americas between the british and the new america. not for hemp. napoleon wasnt involved, and hemp wouldhave been inconsequential. it would be like saying the war of 1938 was fought over VW cars. canada wasnt happly with the commercial output of them.

so lets call it 9 facts.

    • Neil Armstrong

grandez you sure know how to show your ignorance, reread 2.

    • Steve Oh

Different War of 1812 grandez. Tchaikovsky didn’t write the 1812 Overture for America!

    • Lue Harper

grandez must be a Canadian, probably voted for Harper.
The PM of Canada should be made aware of #2, lol!

    • Joseph Troll

This is the only correlation I could find concerning the phrase “Also, the War of 1812 was fought over hemp. Napoleon wanted to cut off Moscow’s export to England.”

June 24th, 1812 Napoleon invades Russia to try and put an end to Britain’s main supply of Russian Hemp but by the end of the year the Russian winter had decimated most of Napoleon’s forces. Did you know that the Royal Navy relied on Russian Hemp to stay afloat during their war with the U.S.? (the War of 1812)
      http://hemp-technologies.com/page33/page33.html

Not exactly what the war was fought over but it did play a role.

    • Lynne

actually he was indirectly http://english.turkcebilgi.com/War+of+1812 “(known as the American War of 1812 in Britain to distinguish it from the war with Napoleon I of France that occurred in the same year) was fought between the United States of America and the United Kingdom and its colonies, especially Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), Nova Scotia and Bermuda.

The war was fought from 1812 to 1815 on both land and sea. By the end of the war, 1,600 British and 2,260 American troops had died.[1]

Britain was at war with France and, to impede American hemp trade with France , imposed a series of restrictions that the U.S. contested as illegal under international law. The Americans declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812 for a combination of reasons, including: outrage at the impressment (conscription) of thousands of American sailors into the British navy; frustration at British restraints on neutral trade; anger at alleged British military support for American Indians defending their tribal lands from encroaching American settlers; and a desire for territorial expansion of the Republic.”

    • I think they were referring to the French attempted invasion of Russia, where the Russians burned Moscow to the ground and forced the French Army to retreat and starve in the Russian winter. The battle that was the inspiration for Tsaichovski’s 1812 overture.

I want hemp to change the world. I want this to work. But I just don’t see it. It’s not illegal worldwide right? Are there any countries where they are using it for fuel, food, textiles and prospering? A real life example would sure help the argument.

    • Hemp is only illegal in the good ole U S of A. Hemp is still grown and used in other countries of the world. Hemp was made illegal because it was too cheap and the rich owners of the forestry lands couldn’t make money by selling pulpwood to paper mills.

      • Wrong! Check Your Facts it’s illegal every where!

        • @Stephen Leggette

I think you had better check your facts Stephen as Hemp is legal in Canada! I use the product EVERY day and it truely is all its cracked up to be!

        • Haley

Hemp is only Illegal to grow in the United States, but you can buy hemp products online, usually grown and produced in other countries like Europe and Aulstralia –

          http://www.buyinghemp.net/
          https://www.hempwa.com/

        • Bear

Actually Stephen there are MANY countries where HEMP not POT is legal to be grown.

        • I think you should check your facts Hemp is grown in 30 countries. Canada is one of the biggest suppliers to America. We have Hemp products on every shelf across America-imagine we can’t grow it here….what a shame ridiculous!!

      • Sarah

Hemp is legal in Australia,, heaps of markets I’ve been to sell hemp clothing, bags, hats.

        • les

          not legal in australia

    • CR

America is actually the only industrialized nation that outlaws hemp. We’re probably the laughing stock of the rest of the world for denying ourselves one of the most useful natural substances known to man.

      • Martha Farrellbegg

CR……sadly, I now honestly believe we are the laughing stock of the world…..we send money & supplies to countries who hate us but accept our items as they are laughing; we allow illegals to come in rampantly; we are the only industrialized nation without national healthcare for our citizens; we outsource more jobs than we provide within our borders; the citizens no longer have a voice that is listened to by our government; ….I am an American citizen and I love this country and what it used to be…..I am just amazed at why we cannot turn it around!

      • terri lukacko

Among other reasons too numerous to mention.

    • mia

It’s legal to grow in Canada, with a permit. I buy hemp seeds all the time to eat. And you can buy it in the US for food. clothes are available everywhere.

  7. Fred

Hemp is in competition with BIG OIL. Hemp rope vs nylon. Hemp oil vs Mobil Oil Hemp gas vs Shell gas so it will never be legal.

  8. Lets face it… The Powers that be want all of the rest of us To Be under the thumb Of Their Concerns. Not Our Concerns. ( They Call All of collectively the unwashed masses and the ” N ” Word.) YES THEY DO! So Don’t Get It Twisted.

  9. marie

Reader from Colorado-glad to report we have a proud hemp farmer. He’s leading the way.

    • Levi Decker

Thank you Hemp lovers! Keep up the good work and let’s all support the farmers with the knowledge and Balls enough to grow Hemp. We now need people to step up and process the hemp and we need People, communities, and companies to produce quality products that will push the unsustainable crap off the market. If anyone currently knows of a supplier of Hemp Canvas I am looking to buy.. Thank you all!

  10. Juliee

I am entirely supportive of the articles you post and the topics discussed, but I think your articles would have a more significant effect on a greater audience if you included sources for all of the wonderful information you post. Skeptics want references, and those of us that are already aware of these things shouldn’t be the target audience.

  11. NOT a different plant. hemp = cannabis sativa = marijuana. now, fact is, you ARE looking for contradictory qualities when you grow it for fiber or for medicine. when you grow it for fiber you want long thick stalks, when you grow it for medicine you want thick bushy flowers. but to try and claim that hemp is a different plant is simply incorrect.

  12. Tony

A wolf and a Chihuahua are both the same too ;-)

  13. kiki

If we start to choose value(s) with our dollars against big oil(wars&pollution)..supply follows demand.. demand hemp, or Electric vehicles (ex: new Fiat EV with rebate just 21k!), substitute out petroleum products, buy/farm local (less transport) etc etc. Can’t fight them? Find and use a more ethical option whenever possible one person at a time. They will follow the money

  14. There are MORE people than politicians!, TELL them WE WANT IT or else shit will hit the fan and surely enough the wheels will start rolling and every person can grow heap even for their own use if they have hemp machinery. Hemp machinery doesn’t have to be all BIG expensive or olden days think plan and build small components that’ll shred, shift, sort different parts of the stems, leaves and roots or whatever sections are required!

  15. ok to some of the commenters and the author.
    1. Gasoline is only from oil, hemp FUEL or DIESEL comes from biomass (oil barons stole the name Diesel in order to sell a nasty byproduct of oil to those who owned Mr. Diesels motors)
2.A monocrop is a monocrop, and just like our agriculture system hurts other animals because they need ecological diversity not found in such instances (case in point are bees), introducing a non-native species to be monocropped, is still damaging to the environment. Timber, and the ecosystem in which trees reside, can be managed using good stewardship practices which promote ecological health. But lumber companies cannot be trusted to manage land in this capacity. I am sure the Koch Bros, and their paper products industry love to buy timber land and exploit it for all its worth.

    • mia

Only hemp used to grow wild all over North America, before it was systematically decimated. Hemp does not strip the soil. And who said anything about monocropping it? You could let everyone grow their own.

  16. I would love, just love to restore a eco system, that has been exploited for all’s it’s worth. http://www.canvas4mylove.info It is legal, you just have to stop listening to the NEWS and read your Constitution!

  17. Won’t it be funny when we find out that all this time we’ve been fighting drug wars in foreign countries, the fuel folk have been the ones growing it and selling us hemp fuel? What the hell else are all those pot plants in Afghanistan for? There’s way too many for just recreational use.

  18. Pingback: Collective-Evolution – Hempcrete: Incredibly Strong and Sustainable Building Material Made From Hemp

  19. mike

    this was nonsensical

  20. As newspaper empires were growing I believe it was Herst purchased huge tracts of timber lands as an investment knowing that the wood would be in great demand as the Western lands were developed. Hemp was a competitive substance, and could be used in place of many wood products, quicker to regrow, and more productive per acre than any kind of trees. That driving force lead to the move to make Hemp/Marijuana illegal in the US. The use of it to smoke was an after thought.

  21. hemp for everything sounds cool to me .

  22. HEMP the still ‘outlawed’ solution to our economic and ecological needs. An issue brought to the forefront by Kenneth J. Hildebrandt in his recent run for US Congress. See: http://ElectKen.com. Ken will run again and hopefully this time around with more effort we can overcome the elites money and elect Ken who will be a voice for the PEOPLE standing for US.

  23. Kingdom: Plantae
    Division: Magnoliophyta
    Class: Magnoliopsida
    Order: Rosales
    Family: Cannabaceae
    Genus: Cannabis L.
    Species: C. Indica
    C. Sativa
    C. Ruderalis
Hemp is any of these species of cannabis BRED down to produce little to almost no THC,CBD, or CBN. This plant is amazing and can be used to restore the land and its people back to a sustainable future. It’s potential is just now becoming know again and the limits to what it can do for us and the planet are without end. Like that crops EVOLVE to there environments they do not pose any credible threat to local ecology. Mans behavior and practices can be dangerous, but not the plants.

  24. As a clothing designer, I would love to see more hemp fabrics available. Right now, I am only getting a few fabrics in stock. The blend of hemp and organic cotton seems to really be one of the best right now.
If I had more resources, I would be able to provide more clothing made from this wondrous versatile plant!
Right now, my best seller is a hemp/organic cotton tunic: https://www.etsy.com/listing/116686659/storm-tunic-hemp-organic-cotton-blend

Here’s to providing a better future, and a conscious lifestyle!

  25. Barbara Cooper

Someone should run a computer projection as to the job creation & boost to the economy that hemp would produce. I’ll wager it will be much higher than the Keystone XL Pipeline – which is already wreaking havoc on the environment from tar sands oil production in Canada.

Vote Hemp and activists are working diligently to eradicate misconceptions about hemp and make it legal to grow and produce for its MANY benefits, not only is it a good source of health but it can actually reverse the green house effect with its “Better than Zero” carbon when used in building materials.

Everyone banters around it but Marijauna will be recognized as one of the most beneficial plants of all time as other visionaries such as Ford already knew. In the future when we wholesale grow up as a species we will be forced to recognize the huge mistake we have made allowing our large drug and oil cartels freedom to rape and pillage. Fortunately it is inevitable for the truth shall set you free. See “Run From The Cure”.

“Sirius” is a feature length documentary that follows Dr. Steven Greer – an Emergency Medicine doctor turned UFO/ New Energy researcher – as he struggles to disclose top secret information about classified energy & propulsion techniques. Along the way, Dr. Greer investigates new technology and sheds light on criminal suppression. He accumulates over 100 Government, Military, and Intelligence Community witnesses who testify on record about their first-hand experiences with UFOs and with the cover-up.

In the course of his research Dr. Greer is asked to look at an amazing find: a humanoid specimen, 6 inches long from the Atacama Desert. Not until 2012 was he given permission to take bone samples and DNA from the specimen. At that same time a pre-eminent geneticist, hearing of this find, offered to do DNA testing. He enlisted an MD from the same university,- world renowned for his work with skeletal anomalies, to view the x-rays and CT scans. Their expertise along with Dr. Greer’s expansive knowledge of the subject bring more questions than answers. Where did this “Atacama Humanoid” come from? Are there others like it? What does it say about the origin of the human species?

While on this odyssey, the audience gains a whole new perspective on technology, human evolution, and clandestine organizations who have manipulated and controlled the public for centuries.
