Humanity appears to be separating itself further and further from it’s motherly planet as the years go by. We can see this through the lack of thought we put into how we design our technologies, means of energy, food production and how we plan for material waste. While there appears to be somewhat of a growing “green” initiative, a closer look at many of these practices and labels suggest that the move to “green” is more of a marketing and selling point than it is a move to truly create more harmony between our products and our environment. This makes you want to ask the question, how many years do we have left before we have taken things too far? With the constant degradation of the ecosystem, we can’t be too far off of a tipping point where things will no longer be able to make their way back.

I came across this video someone had shared with me today. It was made by Steve Cutts and you can find his website with more videos at The video does a great job of looking at humanities relationship with the planet and truly how far it has come over the years. The video is posted below, so be sure to check it out and share this article with your friends as this video is quite a powerful picture.

Here are some stats and facts about our world that go along well with the video below.

  • Each year, US factories spew 3 million tons of toxic chemicals into the air, land and water.
  • According to the World Health Organization, about 2 million premature deaths are caused each year due to air pollution in cities across the world.
  • The earth’s tropical rain forests are rich in plant and animal life. The trees produce millions of cubic meters of oxygen every day, which animals, including humans, need to survive. But humans are destroying over 30,000 square kilometers of rainforest every day.
  • Every day, an estimated 100 plant and animal species are lost to deforestation. A conservative estimate of the current extinction rate indicates that about 27,000 species a year are being lost.
  • More than 20 billion tons of topsoil is lost each year due to pollution.
  • Between 1950 and 1999, an average of 150,000 tons of oil spilled each year into the worlds waterways.
  • 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of America’s lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming or aquatic life.
  • More than 15,000 people in the world die each day because of water pollution.
