Prescription Drugs Kill Over 100,000 People Each Year, Are You Being Medicated Incorrectly?

“Death by medicine is a twenty-first century epidemic, and America’s war on drugs is clearly directed at the wrong enemy.” –Dr. Joseph Mercola [2]

I have briefly focused on mushrooms and cannabis as medicine sources. Now, it is only fair to shine the spotlight on the other side of the medicinal spectrum: prescription drugs. One could go through and list the pros and cons of each individual prescription drug or, to save some time, one could first approach prescription drugs as a whole. Doing so exposes an alarming truth, ringing louder than the individual benefits of each drug.  Prescription drugs are currently responsible for more deaths annually than illegal drugs.  According to Tom Frieden, the CDC director himself, “it’s a big problem, and it’s getting worse [3].”

Out of the 783,936 annual deaths from conventional medicine mistakes, approximately 106,000 of those are the result of prescription drug use [1]. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, two-hundred and ninety people in the United States are killed by prescription drugs every day [4].

Even if prescription drugs do not literally kill a patient though, they slowly kill their mind and body. This alters their ability to innately feel deeply and compassionately, the patient can be stripped piece by piece of his inner awareness and inner consciousness, the very essence of their being.

Death by Rx can be sentenced in the form of many, often times subtle masks. Since it happens slowly, the clouding of the patient’s once clear brain goes unnoticed as the fog sets in so densely that he is no longer able to decipher if this new state of consciousness is “normal” or if it is better or less than it should be; rather, it just is. The body system is inevitably forced to adjust to the foreign  chemicals the patient pops in his mouth every morning, activating the conditioning of acceptance of his new found state of awareness as if it is as it has always been. As if this shift in consciousness ceased to ever occur. Little by little he fades, until the place where his mind now resides is one far away.

Prescription pills merely treat, or should I say bandage, undesirable behaviors and sensations as opposed to addressing the underlying root cause of the problem. Band-Aids disintegrate as the medication fades, only to unveil unwanted symptoms once more.  For example, a patient tells their doctor they are abnormally tired, at which point the doctor delivers a diagnosis of “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” equipped with a prescription for a medication that promotes “wakefulness” such as Vyvanse, Nuvigil, Provigil, or Adderall. Entering the picture before you can so much as dig your toes into the problems accompanied with use or potential abuse of stimulants is a bright red flag. One that arose before the doctor’s pen was able to so much as brush against his Rx pad.  “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” similar to countless other diagnoses accepted by an outlandish amount of patients with each given day, is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom. A symptom of a diagnosis that the doctor failed to put a respectable amount of effort into identifying. People do not become chronically tired for no reason, lest they fall chronically lazy; in which case a prescription surely exists for as well. Chronic debilitating fatigue is a clear sign the body system is not functioning at its optimal level. Knowledge that the body will always work to do what is necessary to survive, and that even then, it is still immensely fatigued, sets off a deafening siren signaling the presence of a problem too big for the body’s system to compensate for. The sad and infuriating truth is that a large handful of people diagnosed with “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” and numerous other disorders are in reality suffering from something as simple as a nutritional deficiency, easily identifiable with a hair analysis test. I use the term “simple” because when this is the case, a stout dose of the select nutrient may be administered to the patient on a temporary basis, during which the deficiency will correct itself and the patient will be alleviated of “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.”

Scenarios like this easily occur due to the average dietary standards, or lack thereof, followed by the majority of society. It is truly a shame to think of a person taking prescription drugs with an essay length of possible side effects, when the answer to their health problem lay within the painless process of nutrient replenishment all along. Some doctors, not all, are quite apt to spatting off spoof diagnoses and prescribing whatever dangerous drug their alleged diagnosis may require. And to what expense? Useless, avoidable suffering of a patient whose doctor overlooked the most obvious and important symptom of all -that the patient, like himself, is a human being. An equal being treated inhumanely by a fellow human being who he sought out with trust regarding his problem.  Take a step back, take the truth in. This happens frequently, so there is no use to pretend, let it all sink in. Now, who is the truly sick one?

Logically speaking, the war on drugs would be on the ones responsible for the most fatalities and health complications, the ones that are easily accessible and right in front of our faces, the ones which remain legal despite all this; rather than on the drugs that are already illegal and monitored, more difficult to obtain, and responsible for less deaths. Taking the bigger picture into account, if the war on drugs was honestly centered on the well-being of society, focus would be placed on drugs most harmful to the human body system, prescription drugs. But that is logically speaking and unfortunately, logically speaking commonly translates to wishful thinking in the world of war, medicine and illegal drugs. With each passing moment, “logic” becomes more and more of a foreign concept to the major parties in charge of the world of conventional western medicine.

    @ to the Author-
I would love to include cannabis in my diet. (Raw leaves, seeds, juice, oil…) However, with marijuana being illegal, I have no clue how to do this! Are there forms of cannabis that I can acquire as a dietary supplement, legally? If so, where can I buy it? I live in New Mexico. Any info would be helpful. Thanks! :)

    • People who smoke cigarettes usually smoke weed, ask them politely and I’m sure they’d oblige. I would, I always do 😀 lol

    • You can get hemp oil on Amazon.

      • Gerlinde

        Is it good one, Nikki?

    • Carolyn

P.s. I am all for legalization of Marijuana. I also avoid pharmaceutical drugs at all costs! My sister, who was only 30 years old, died in her sleep. Her heart stopped while she was sleeping… she was on an array of prescription drugs. All prescribed by the same doctor… drugs that she shouldn’t have been on in the first place (imo), let alone mixing! The problem is our government, they are controlled by big pharm and other large corporations. They act like it’s ok to drug us up and kill us off with man made chemicals (population control)… all while making a plant that can cure cancer illegal just to pad their wallets! GRRRRRR!!!

  2. maryann

I can’t speak for all with CFS/ ME, but mine is not due to a vitamin defiency!! I know this is being diagnosed more often but would suggest you look at mitochondria dysfunction due to, among other things, heavy metal poisoning, exposure to toxic chemicals (organophosphates, pesticides, etc). This has been covered extremely well by Sarah Myhill. If it were *just* a vitamin defiency there would be an absolute epidemic of CFS. Please, we go through enough with all the naysayers around, the last thing we need is to be told to take extra vitamins and all will be well.
Apart from that, a briliant article…. let’s just hope enough people start throwing their drugs away and exploring new avenues to regain their health.

maryann I can’ throw away my thyroid meds, since my thyroid has been taken out :(
(and it wasn’t necessary, so it turned out later)

  3. WildMouse

MaryAnn, I had FMS for over 20 years and completely resolved with MSM. That ONE substance alone was enough to heal the myelin sheath on my nerves and ALL of my symptoms were gone within two weeks. So yes, I understand where you are coming from but sometimes it truly is a deficiency – you just have to figure out what. For me is was MSM. If you havent heard of it or tried it, please look for a high quality one from a reputable company and give it a try…. What do you have to loss… except the CFS/ME. Prayers for you.

    • maryann

Glad you found something that worked for you WildMouse, but Fibromyalgia is different to CFS. I know MSM can work for many different health problems, mainly because it gives us nutrients now missing from our food due to poor quality soil that has been overfarmed and loaded with chemicals. I have been using natural health products (vits, herbs, homoepathy, etc) for over 15yrs now but 3yrs ago I hit a wall and have been struggling ever since. My causes for CFS are mine. My options for recovery are limited due to circumstances of my life. The very point of Holistic Medicine (which is what every Naturopath is supposed to be practicing) is that it recognises that each person has an individual reason for being ill and will need an individualised programme to regain their health. Making such broad statements (re: the article) about healing an often very personal condition is hardly an holistic approach.
The last thing we need is for complimentary therapies to start prescribing in the same ‘this problem needs that medicine’ way that coventional medicine has used to our detriment over the last 50yrs.
I DO appreciate that many people are nutritionally deficient, but why use an example as contriversial as CFS to make a point? Why not point out that prescribing iron alone for anaemia is a waste of time because zinc, B12, folic acid and vit C are all needed to ensure effective results.
I’m really pleased that MSM was so helpful for you, but please understand that it wont work for everyone. May your good health and regained zest for life continue x

  4. Janice

I have waited for something like this. I have looked into everything i could on healing w out drugs. I would love to know and see more articles surface like this for the world to get it

  5. Sarah

Thanks to me finally doing some research, my doctor will have his hands full!! A 22 yr old should not have the problems I’m experiencing and the doctors that ive had just keep trying to throw pills at me without actually giving me a diagnosis! Then will order thousands of dollar test that dont show much info only to order yet another test that show a lot more and for a fraction of the cost! ALL ABOUT MONEY! its sickening! Living in the US causes some major issues when you try going on all atural diets or trying to cleanse yourself of toxins also.

  6. sar

    useless FDA

  7. MS drugs are the worst ones ever of any disease

    • Gerlinde

Thyroid meds are a hell too.. I want to change from synthetics to natural thyroid (Armour etc..), but now I read those pigs, where the desiccated thyroid comes from, are eventually GMO-fed :(

  8. athas

I don’t doubt the veracity of this article. But if it weren’t for modern medicine and prescription drugs you would have millions of people dying. What is 100,000 compared to millions? Prescription drugs save many more people than they kill.

  9. athas

Why did you not post my comment? Because it was true?

  10. Debbie Collingwood

Good article and so true.. A healthy patient is not a profit making patient. Also garbage in garbage out. If we give our bodies junk and toxins and expect our bodies to run well, we are deceiving
ourselves. Then we wonder why we are sick and have our bodies are screaming at us because as you said the problem is too big for it to take care of the problem as it needs to!!

    • david moore

My mothers husband has cancer and at the moment has flu and is ill in bed ,he is taking antibiotics on top of his cancer tablets ,I told her to buy garlic ,natural honey and ginger and she said maybe ,,how do you change the mind of a generation that trusts the doctor more than their own family.

  11. Michael

Big Pharma follows the tried and proven formula of almost any for-profit company: Loudly and widely advertise the favorable aspects of your product and (in the case of legal drugs), the results of your own carefully controlled “research and studies” while quietly burying the adverse side of the equation; design your product/service so that repeat and perpetual use is required; bride … er … “give incentives” to those that are in the position to push your product on the consumer, (doctors in this case); bribe … er … “contribute” to each of the cooperative candidate/legislator’s campaign finances, (that are in key positions to affect regulations/approval of your product) and control public perceptions through multiple media venues.
Mastering these techniques will ensure your company’s success, bring stunning yearly salaries to top executives while large numbers of unsuspecting consumers suffer and die from unpublished, adverse effects of your product.

  12. Frank C. Barnwell

Yeah Pham Fresh Drugs do kill, Generally if you are Wealthy and would like to take your Wealth with you, sorry not in this Millennium; and besides the GERMANS have to be Paid off for the WWll Theater, so they handle 90% of Productions of Pharm Fresh Dope.

  13. arik rosman

hello, can you make this article more simple? and if you do can you please make me know? this information is very important it has to “pass on” but i find it hard for me to translate it. THANK YOU
