Groundbreaking Study Links Monsanto’s Glyphosate To Cancer

crop dustingGlyphosate is a major component of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. It was created and manufactured on a mass scale by Monsanto and is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. A number of scientific studies surrounding glyphosate have shed light on the danger it posses to the human body. A new groundbreaking study has now found that the most active ingredient in Monsanto’s best selling herbicide “Roundup” is responsible for fuelling breast cancer by increasing the number of breast cancer cells through cell growth and cell division.

The study is published in the US National Library of Medicine (4) and will soon be published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. Several recent studies showed glyphosate’s potential to be an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system in mammals. These disruptors can cause developmental disorders, birth defects and cancer tumours.

Glyphosate exerted proliferative effects only in human hormone-dependent breast cancer. We found that glyphosate exhibited a weaker estrogenic activity than estradiol. Furthermore, this study demonstrated the additive estrogenic effects of glyphosate and genisein which implied that the use of glyphosate-contaminated soybean products as dietary supplements may pose a risk of breast cancer because of their potential additive estrogenicity. (4)

Researchers also determined that that Monsanto’s roundup is considered an “xenoestrogen,” which is a foreign estrogen that mimics real estrogen in our bodies. This can cause a number of problems that include an increased risk of various cancers, early onset of puberty, thyroid issues, infertility and more.

Scientists also recently discovered that the Bt toxins found in Monsanto’s crops are damaging to red blood cells which are key to delivering oxygen to the body. They have been linked to cancer and kidney function decline. You can read more about that here.

It doesn’t stop there, Monsanto’s roundup was also  linked to Autism, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease not too long ago.

When you ingest Glyphosate, you are in essence altering the chemistry of your body. It’s completely unnatural and the body doesn’t resonate with it. P450 (CYP) is the gene pathway disrupted when the body takes in Glyphosate(3). P450 creates enzymes that assist with the formation of molecules in cells, as well as breaking them down. CYP enzymes are abundant and have many important functions. They are responsible for detoxifying xenobiotics from the body, things like the various chemicals found in pesticides, drugs and carcinogens. Glyphosate inhibits the CYP enzymes. The CYP pathway is critical for normal, natural functioning of multiple biological systems within our bodies. Because humans that have been exposed to glyphosate have a drop in amino acid tryptophan levels, they do not have the necessary active signalling of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is associated with weight gain, depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Obviously, the chemistry behind Glyphosate is known by Monsanto. The fact that it disrupts the CYP gene pathway, the enzymes that play a major role in body detoxification is something that can easily contribute to illness and disease. I wonder if this has a direct correlation to the pharmaceutical industry possibly? The same major financial institutions that own major biotech and food corporations also own most of the major pharmaceutical companies.  Mainstream media in North America will always promote GMOs and Roundup as well as emphasize their safety. That couldn’t be further from the truth, they damage your DNA and RNA genomes, not just for profit but for experimentation and control. Fidelity investments, State Street Corporation, JP Morgan Chase and The Vanguard Group seem to own all major food corporations and pharmaceutical companies (1)(2).

It’s good to see more alternative media outlets sharing, and spreading information around the world together. The world is experiencing a mass awakening like never before, and it continues to move forward at an exponential rate. We are living in exciting times, aren’t we? Monsanto’s roundup alone is cause for so many concerns, and can create several health conditions within the human body. Why are we ingesting this stuff? Why do we allow this stuff?

I think people need to be more educated about what they put in their body. This article is really helpful. I do believe a lot of people out there have no clue about Mosanto and GMO’s. For example, I was asking to one of my coworker yesterday if he know what is GMO. He have no idea and never even heard of it. Seriously??? WAW!!! I do believe the Gov do aware of the links of Mosanto product to cancer and other health risk but it’s about money and politic! Can you all imagine, if we all are healthy then no one will need to see Doctor or taking any medication or be admited to the Hospital. Therefore they will be one less money for the Gov. If less people sick, will be less Hospital, less employees, less student, less school and most of all less tax money from us employess to them. That is just one example how we all been screw by people that we thought actually protected us!! So in this case, think about it why in the world “The Obama” agree on this???http://action.fooddemocracynow.org/sign/obama_signs_monsanto_protection_act_time_to_label_gmos/

Thank you so much for this information linking to Breast Cancer. As a survivor that is diligent about doing the right things I feel directed to contact as many Breast Cancer and Health groups to alert them to these facts and hope that one of them not connected somehow with this twisted industry can advocate for its removal from our food and environment.

Is there any information on how long glyphosate remains active? Does it break down over a period of time or does it stay in the soil? Can it cross from contaminated soil to plants? If I have an area of my garden that has been sprayed in the past with glyphosate, at what point would it be safe to use to grow organic vegetables (if ever)

Meg, While I research to answer your question, may I suggest planting in a raised bed using either soil from another source or another location. This is what I’m doing, not because of Roundup, but because my husband received some “free” soil to fill holes left by roots after Hurricane Lili downed a 65 foot tall cedar tree in our back yard. The “free” soil may have been contaminated with radionuclides, which are highly prevalent in South Louisiana because of the subsurface and the normally occurring radioactive materials present in production waters. While cleaning up contaminated pipeyards, some entreprising people, mixed the hazardous components with soil, and tried to sell it to naive consumers. But their sales were not before the legislature acted and prohibited the practice of fraud because of the rising rate of bone cancer that the radionuclides would cause to the population.

My beautiful German Shorthair pointer tasted the salty (brine) production waters, and 3 months later was dying of bone cancer. Our veterinarian said she would need her forearm amputated at the shoulder, followed by a large collar to keep her from biting the missing limb and both chemo and radiation treatments, and despite all this she will likely die anyway, My husband chose to put her out of her misery since I was to start physical therapy that day for a fractured hip. I could not care for myself much less by beloved dog..

Radionuclides take a lifetime and then some to break down. I did not want to take chances. Instead I bought a raised bed from Gardener Supply Company and good top soil to grow veggies. It was not cheap or free, but at least in the Green Mountain State where citizens are more aware. They worked to pass the first right to know law for mandatory labeling of glyphosate modified organismsof how to grow food the correct way working with nature instead of against to protect the air, soil, and waters and our children’s future. This is the raised bed I bought, http://tinyurl.com/lxqxod2
It is made out of cedar so rotting is not a problem, nor is arsenic or pesticide treated wood, because the wood is NOT treated. It’s natural.

Just a point of clarification. The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) does not publish scientific studies. The NLM indexes biomedical journals (in the database PubMed) that (do) publish studies. Reference number 4 that you cited links to PubMed, but the study was not published by NLM. The study comes from:
    Food Chem Toxicol. 2013 Sep;59:129-36.

Yes I understand that :) Thanks for clearing that up.

I work in public pesticide application and one of our main weed control is Ranger Pro, which is basically Roundup. I just wanted to clear up a few things that I felt are misleading. As an applicator, I have a huge responsibility to my safety as well as yours, all applicators do. If Roundup is applied correctly, you will never come into contact of any kind with any of the chemicals.

I have a masters in plant biology and let me simplify how the product works. Glyphosate is the the chemical that kills the plant. The other inert chemicals are present to ensure that the glyphosate attaches to the intended target and doesn’t leach into the ground. As soon as roundup hits the target, chemical degradation begins. After 1-4 hours, when the product has dried these chemicals can only be absorbed by mammals if the plant is ingested. After 7 days, all chemicals have been mostly broken down to nitrogen in the top soil.

The way roundup is used in crops is misleading in this article. Food crops are not sprayed with roundup, this would kill them. Before tilling the soil and planting, the crop site is sprayed usually a month before planting. Long after all the roundup is gone. This is done to ensure that no potentially fatal weeds like hemlock and hogweed are present during harvesting. Every “organic” farm in the US uses this practice.

One of the easiest ways to tell if a herbicide is present is through lactating cows. Roundup is used on undesired plants on dairy farms. When the instructions for application were used correctly, none of the lacting cows had any of it in their milk.

The tests done on this article largely have to do with ingesting roundup in its concentrate form. This just doesn’t happen because the product is not applied in concentrate because it will not work. It has to be mixed with water. The same harmful chemicals (not glyphosate which is a plant hormone) are found in dishwasher soap, comet, hand soaps, degreasers, oxyclean, etc.

Sorry for any grammatical errors and I would answer questions asked. I’m not trying to attack anyone, if you feel that way I apologize. There are at least two sides to every story, at least try to hear them all.

Jonathan said there are two sides to every story. I agree. But, even with opinions, stated as facts one needs to know from where those facts came Hence, I submit this on 3-15-2015

Glyphosate is responsible for more drift than any other herbicide or except 2,4-D in the State of California, the only state that keeps such records. It’s the nature of the beast, and as more and more herbicide resistant glyphosate modified organisms are released into the environment, and as more glyphosate is allowed to be sprayed on conventional (a.k.a. “natural” produce, grains, and beans), more and more Superweeds are created which are resistant to a variety of herbicides, including but not limited to glyphosate, 2,4-D and dicamba drifting beyond 6 miles from the fields. Additionally, glyphosate is used in aerial spraying, meaning the chemicals drift far from the fields. There studies for this information were apparently taken down or their links broken.

The manufacturers label the “active” ingredient and in 1960, before the molecule was purchased by Monsanto, Glyphosate was first created by Stauffer Chemicals — a U.S. company with a business of cleaning industrial pipes and boilers of mineral scales. The mineral deposits are called scales, and the pipe cleaning chemicals are called descaling agents. Meaning, it binds to metals indiscriminately and dissolves and prevents minerals from being reactive or bioavailable in solution. When the descaling solution was disposed of in nature, it was obvious that it killed plants. The chemical company Monsanto promptly bought the molecule, patented it as a herbicide in 1969, and got it registered so it could be commercialized in 1974, according to According to Thierry Vrain, Ph.D., who retired as a genetic engineer and as head of Agriculture Canada some 12 years ago, and created his first organic herb farm upon retiring. There he learned hands-on what he was never taught at the university or in grad school. Not all nematodes are bad, many are beneficial in fact, but they are killed with Glyphosate. Organic agriculture is all about working with nature, working with the soil to produce healthy organisms in the soil and in the plants that feed on them.

It is NOT glyphosate that kills the plants. Glyphosate is the mineral chelator and when they chelate or bind the beneficial minerals in the soil making them unavailable to be assimilated into roots, the plants, the animals who alike people who eat the plants for a healthy well being and to repair. Herbicides reduce the nutrient quality of the food we eat and slow healing processes.

My fractured spine and pelvis healed in 7 weeks eating a healthy plant-based diet of totally organic food production. My physician was stunned. He said he would expect someone to begin repair and build bone within 3 months, but not 3 weeks. And by the end of the next 4 weeks, I was totally healed! Not strong yet, but healed. This cannot be done consuming dairy, or consuming herbicide resistant crops, it can only be done eating healthy dark leaves of greens and other plants grown by the organic method as they are easily adsorbed by the body.

When glyphosate was registered in the USA, it was registered based on the acute effects, not on the chronic effects. Even at high levels, Roundup does not kill immediately. But, as more and more Roundup contaminates the environment, more and more people and animals will become sick, deformed or die. Livestock that are forced to eat Glyphosate modified organisms and herbicide resistant feed lose their resistance and die sooner than healthy animals kept away from such chemicals according to Dr. Monika Krueger. Detection of Glyphosate in Malformed Piglets

(Hope the correct study has been cited. Some glyphosate shill is messing with my computer!)

“Results indicate that glyphosate and AMPA are usually detected together, mobile, and occur widely in the environment. Glyphosate was detected without AMPA in only 2.3% of samples, whereas AMPA [the degradation product] was detected without glyphosate in 17.9% of samples. Glyphosate and AMPA were detected frequently in soils and sediment, ditches and drains, precipitation, rivers, and streams; and less frequently in lakes, ponds, and wetlands; soil water; and groundwater.”

By law and by regulation, no SYNTHETIC chemical herbicides or pesticides are used in or on organic agriculture without first being approved by a process stated in the law, and glyphosate has NOT BEEN APPROVED.

Just a quick clarification; roundup is used on food crops like soybeans when the crop on the north side of the hill is still green but they want to harvest the whole field at once. They kill the green beans with roundup so they all ‘ripen’ or at least dry out at the same time.
