Bahrokh Khoshnevis, a professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California and his team of scientists say that their new technology will soon allow giant 3D printers to build entire houses (multi-level)  in one day. (1)

The printing technology is called “contour crafting,” and has grabbed the attention of NASA as well as the National Inventors Hall of Fame. This giant technology (gigantic 3D printer) will be able to create entire structures out of concrete. Apparently contour crafting could also reduce the total cost of owning a home, and make it easier to repair homes that are damaged by natural events. Contour crafting would also embed all of the necessary requirements to run a home, such as electricity, plumbing and air conditioning.

“Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human colonization before the end of the new century. It’s basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building.” (source)

The first thing that needs to be done is leveling the area where the printed house will be built. Secondly, trenches are dug out around the perimeter and filled with concrete. Then, a system of rails is built on the sides of the foundation. The printing device is then lowered and raised using a crane while being fed building materials.

“Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run.” (source)

This isn’t the only example of gigantic buildings. Companies are already using 3D printers for large developments. Below is a video of another example of how 3D printing can revolutionize construction. It’s the trailer for a film called “The Man Who Prints Houses,” you can learn more about that here.

The developers of this technology are currently exploring more options, but clearly this technology has a lot of potential. It’s definitely interesting and really shows what humans are capable of. It’s a shame that we hang onto the belief that money is required for these types of projects. The answer to new developments and implementation always seems to be money. This is a concept that the human race must move beyond if it is to move forward and thrive. All we have to do is cooperate and work together, if we do that, just imagine what we could create together!

Combine this technology with Hempcrete, and clean energy generation like Free Energy, everybody on the planet could have a home with no bills to pay. It’s simple, not complicated. So ask yourself, why is our world the way it is today when it doesn’t have to be this way?
