This cool find is certainly something that you don’t hear of everyday but deals with something that will one day affect us all; death. Not to scare you away or anything, but this awesome find is actually an interesting approach to funeral arrangements that may very well be a thing of the future.
Gerard Moline has designed the very first biodegradable urn called the Bios Urn. The urn itself is made from coconut shell, compacted peat and cellulose. Inside the urn comes a seed for a tree. Once a persons remains are placed into the urn, it can be planted and from that, you have a tree. You could say that if you chose this urn for your body when you die, you would grow into a tree! The Bios urn also gives you the choice of which type of tree you would like to grow. So if you always wanted to be a Douglas Fur when you grew up, then this could help make that a reality.
How does one come up with such an idea? Gerard has the idea come into fruition after working in the funeral business for quite some time and realizing he could create an interesting new way to “leave this world.” In this sense we can see that this urn truly explores the notion of “life after death.” At the same time it is an awesome, cheap eco solution to a very expensive business.
The average funeral, if choosing burial options, can run a family upwards between $7000 and $10,000 but that can jump higher depending on chosen options. Cremation can cost about $2500+ on average and with the Bios Urn you can add a low-cost option to an otherwise costly service. At the same time the option is unique and environmentally friendly.
