Russell Brand has become quite the talking point amongst activist types. Whether it be his thoughts on our society in general or on something as focused as the War on Drugs, Russell seems to always have something intelligent and thought-provoking to say — a skill I think we all wish our politicians and world leaders possessed, or at least practiced more often, too.
Russell may be best known for his calls for revolution, especially the one he gave to Jeremy Paxton during an interview where he spoke about why he refuses to vote. Brand stated, “It is not that I am not voting out of apathy. I am not voting out of absolute indifference and weariness and exhaustion from the lies, treachery and deceit of the political class that has been going on for generations.”
Of course, his outspoken views haven’t gone without criticism. Even many activists, wary of Brand’s popularity, worried he was being used as part of an agenda to distract the people and make them focus on things that do not matter. While this is a possibility and has certainly been done in the past, his message and delivery feel authentic to me, which I have discussed here.
Brand’s Thoughts on the War on Drugs
Brand, who has had his own experiences with drug addiction in the past, has also spoken out about the War on Drugs, and what he has to say is once again quite thought-provoking. He appeared on Channel 4 news with Jon Snow and shared his views on the dangers of drugs and also the dangers associated with the State making their use a criminal act.
