Are you goal oriented? Does the gap between your wishes and dreams often leave you feeling frustrated, unfulfilled and with a sense of lack?
When we are striving for something, whether it be a new or better career or a change in our life circumstances, it is common to get caught up in the thought of “when I reach/become (insert future here) then I will begin my “real” life.” The problem with this line of thinking usually becomes apparent when some kind of hurdle arises obstructing fulfillment of this future life. For instance, being denied entry into grad school, questioning whether you were meant to achieve success, have a family or the lifestyle you want.
Perceived hurdles often lead to dissolution, depression, and doubt. This is because many of us get trapped into thinking, “if I don’t become X then I don’t know who I am.”
If this is you, I want to let you know a little secret: You are not your job/goal/or any vision of your future. You are you already.
A Reminder to Embrace Life as a Process
What many ambitious individuals seem to lose sight of is that life is happening NOW, not later, not when you finally get the career you want or future you see for yourself. If you are goal oriented (hello, Taurus here!), I know this is challenging to accept. Remember, it’s not the achievement itself that will bring you happiness or fulfillment. Trust me when I say people who have achieved the goal you are striving for are not necessarily happier than you.
Fulfillment is Embracing the Present
It helps to think of striving for goals as a journey, something you take up for the ride itself. Remember this ride may not be as smooth as you prefer and could contain many unexpected stops. This does not mean you were not meant to take this path or you are not good enough/do not deserve the end goal if your journey is longer/looks different from others. Your individual experience and process is valid because it belongs to you.
The Universe and your Higher Self are not concerned with whether your experience matches your expectations or looks like others taking up similar goals. You need whatever process you are in right now because it is the one best suited for you to learn, experience and grow. As Eckhart Tolle stated:
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.” ― Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose
So instead of fighting it, embrace it! Realize life is constantly unfolding and evolving. If you can get on board with this truth you will uncover how to cultivate happiness and fulfillment: Embrace every moment of your life as a lesson tailored to you.
