President Barrack Obama first came into power at noon on January 20th 2009. By October of that same year, he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
Specifically, The Norwegian Nobel Committee mentioned Obama had done well fostering a new climate in international relations with the Muslim world. When Obama was awarded with this prize, many people were confused and shocked about why someone who was so heavily involved in war, especially with Muslims, could have been given such an award.
In fact, there were even campaigns that gained popularity asking that Obama’s Nobel award be revoked.
The Purpose Of The Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize is very much all about how it sounds, it’s an award given to those who promote peace in the biggest way possible. The award was created by Alfred Nobel who was interested in social issues and was heavily engaged in the peace movement. An excerpt from Alfred Nobel’s peace prize will states the purpose of the award quite clearly:
“The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: /- – -/ one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
Given this, and given that Obama has been at war his entire presidency, does it make sense that he received an award such as this? Does it not take a great deal of credibility away from the award as a whole? Does Barrack belong beside people like Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela for giving the go ahead to commit war on millions?
Fact Checks: Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in October of 2009 yet spent 160 billion in war funding in both 2009 and in 2010. He still continues to fund war heavily to this day. Including almost spending 1 billion bombing ISIS.
Russel Brand Chimes In
Russel recently posted on his Facebook page: “So Obama plans to spend $1 trillion on nuclear weapons. Is it time for him to return his Nobel Peace Prize?” Along with this question he posted a video from his “The Trews” series. Check it out as he makes some interesting points.

What do you think? Does Obama truly deserve an award like this? Should he have been given the award in the first place given what he had or hadn’t achieved? Does this take away from the credibility of the award all together?
