The number of people choosing to live “off the grid” these days seems to be increasing all over the world, and an Island approximately one hour off the coast of Vancouver is another great example of this growing trend.
It’s called Lasqueti, and it sits between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. It has a population of about 400 people, and again, it’s completely off grid. It’s not connected to British Colombia’s hyrdo power infrastructure, and residents are responsible for using alternative methods of generating electricity, like solar power.
Many people today are building Earthships, mentioned in the video below, which is also a concept we’ve written about and you can view that article here.
Living “off the grid” means you are totally independent, living without reliance on utility corporations.
“It does not mean living in the stone age, it’s not about bush craft. It’s about generating your own power, your own water, dealing with your own waste. Probably as part of a community, not living on your own like a hermit. It’s also about being more self-reliant and being less dependent on the system. Perhaps realizing that the system isn’t really protecting us anymore and we have to look after ourselves.” – George Noory From Coast To Coast Am
Important: “Off Grid Living Doesn’t Have To Be So “Primitive”
A common misconception about living “off grid” and independence from any corporate influence is the thought that it requires you to go back to some type of stone-aged living. This could not be further from the truth. Sure, some people (like the ones portrayed in the video above) might prefer not to use all the modern amenities we have that require power, but there is a tremendous amount of potential for the entire human race to be completely “off-grid” yet still maintain, or achieve an even better lifestyle that includes all modern amenities. We have the technological means to do this and to live better without losing any of the privileges we have come to enjoy.
Most of the issues come down to generating power, and the way in which we have (and currently do) generated power has been extremely harmful to the planet. It doesn’t have to be this way; we don’t need oil and we most certainly don’t need to continue stripping (and destroying) the planet of its natural resources to provide power to the world. This is exactly why major players in the game of energy are dropping their investments into current energy generating methods, and investing into clean energy initiatives – like the Rockefeller family, for example. The world’s largest private bank, UBS, is urging investors to join the clean, renewable energy movement. Analysts at the bank say that power plants in Europe might be extinct within the next 10 to 20 years.
“Most of the plants retiring in the future will not be replaced, large scale power plants could be on the path to extinction.”(source)
How Will The Entire World Go Off Grid? How Will It Not Be So “Primitive?”
There are a number of ways we could go off grid and provide power to the entire planet. We could populate the world’s deserts with solar panels and we could also use wind turbines, or vortex induced vibrations (ocean currents) or a combination of them all. The list of possibilities is really endless. It’s frustrating to think about sometimes, because we have both the solutions and the means to implement them. So ask yourself, why aren’t we doing it?
If we could harness 0.1 percent of the energy in the ocean, we could support the energy needs of 15 billion people. In the English Channel, for example, there is a very strong current, so you produce a lot of power.” – Michael Bernitsas, Professor of Naval Architecture at the University of Michigan
You can read more about the research that’s come from Professor Bernitsas here.
The point I am trying to make here is that there are so many viable and affordable solutions which we could implement if we really wanted to. It’s hard to think that, given the number of solutions we have, there are people on this planet who do not want to see the world change, for various reasons. This can be a scary thought, and and difficult for many to accept, especially when many of these people are in control of most of the worlds resources.
There are also a number of developments being made with regards to over-unity devices, one great example is the work of Paramahmsa Tewari , You can find more articles by Collective Evolution on over-unity here.
Our current way of generating power in our homes, our businesses, our cars, and more could be replaced with a combination of these new developments, and more people are starting to realize this every day. Our entire world could be completely off grid, and all the necessities (food, water, shelter) could be provided to everybody. It’s completely possible and we are running out of time to make this a reality. We absolutely have the potential to create a reality where everybody can thrive.
