Filming at nearly 2000 feet (600 meters) below the Gulf of Mexico, researchers aboard the Nautilus vessel were surprised when a sperm whale had a close encounter with their remotely operated vehicle.

When I first came across this footage, the fact that it was filmed below the Gulf of Mexico instantly had me thinking about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, also known as the BP oil disaster, that occurred in 2010. It then had me thinking about the nuclear incident in Fukushima, where millions of tonnes of radioactive water was, and still is, pouring into the Pacific ocean.

That lead me to thoughts of “The Great Garbage Patch,” an area the size of Queensland, Australia where there is approximately one million tonnes of plastic spread throughout the ocean. Drag a net in any area of this part of the ocean and you will pick up toxic, discarded plastic. You can find out more about that here. Finally, it had me thinking about the common occurrence of whales showing up dead on multiple beaches, bringing us a message with stomachs full of plastic. What are we doing to our oceans? This has happened multiple times. You can read and find out more about that here.

The craziest thing about all these experiences is, it doesn’t have to be this way. We have the resources to change the way we do things here, so why aren’t we making the effort?

Earth is full of majestic creatures, and our own human activity has drastically crept into their world and destroyed it. The frustrating thing about it is the fact that again, it doesn’t have to be this way. We as one human race have the potential to create a world where every living being on the planet can thrive and coexist in a peaceful manner.

“We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest.” – Buckminister Fuller

We are fiercely out of balance with nature, and it’s showing. The desire to restore and return the planet back to its natural state is being felt by many, and hopefully, if the collective desires, it will eventually happen… but there is plenty of work to be done.

Having worked in this field for nearly five years now, it’s great to see the tremendous amount of progress we’ve made, and how people are becoming aware of what’s happening on our planet with regards to finance, health, environment, animal cruelty, transparency, and more. On the other hand, I come across aspects of the human experience that are hard to deal with; I look into things that have me questioning how we’ve even managed to come this far.

With all of the damage we do to this planet on a daily basis, it’s really hard to comprehend how it hasn’t been completely destroyed. It makes me wonder if we are not receiving some kind of assistance we are unaware of. That being said, the opportunity to change and make the world a better place, in multiple areas, is still a strong possibility, but we don’t have forever.

There are many aspects of our human experience that do not resonate with with the majority of people, and there are clearly parts of that reality which we’ve simply outgrown, that we can make better so everybody in the world has an opportunity to thrive, including the magnificent creature you see in this picture.

Hopefully this spectacular footage gives you some food for thought, as it did for me.
