On August 29th 2015, a woman by the name of Amy Pence Brown decided to strip down completely to her underwear in a busy public market located in downtown Boise, Idaho, following in the footsteps of Jae West, a woman who did the same thing just days before in London’s Picadilly Circus. After she did so, she blindfolded herself, holding out a couple of markers in front of a sign that read:
“I’m standing for anyone who has struggled with a self-esteem issue like me, because all bodies are valuable. To support self-acceptance, draw a heart on my body.”

It’s no secret that corporations involved in the beauty industry use clever marketing tactics to influence the minds of the masses and force them to accept their definition of beauty. This definition is, of course, extremely narrow, along with being unrealistic, unattainable, unhealthy, and for the most part… photoshopped. It doesn’t even come close to representing anything to do with real beauty.
We live in a world where young girls believe that being thin, wearing makeup, and looking one certain way (as defined by the ‘beauty’ industry and the media) – is the only way to be attractive. This is the kind of influence these corporations have over our psyches. They are so powerful that they dictate government policy and control the media, exerting a huge influence over the way people think and the way they feel about themselves.
Ask yourself, are your thoughts, perceptions, ideas, and wants really your own? Or have they been programmed into you by an external force, like marketing?
It’s time to redefine beauty, and get in touch with our hearts, that’s when we really see truth instead of programmed ideas and guidelines that are laid out for us to follow blindly. Be yourself, don’t worry what anybody else thinks of you. Treat others as you would like to be treated, if your intentions are good and your heart is pure, you can’t make a mistake – you can only learn.
It’s great to work towards being healthier, but don’t waste your time trying to look a certain way to cover up insecurities. It’s easier said than done, I know.
Human beings are emotional, sensitive people, and those atop the pyramid have capitalized on our self doubt. But you are your own worst critic. Keep that in mind the next time you stare into the mirror and feel unhappy about what’s looking back at you – don’t doubt yourself anymore, step into yourself and be confident! Hopefully this video will inspire you to change the messaging in your head and trust in the innate beauty of every body, including your own.
