Over the past few decades, we have really been able to see the damage that we have been causing to ourselves, the environment and obviously the countless animals that are slaughtered every single day, solely for us to consume. It is becoming clear to many that we cannot continue in this way. There have been many people that have decided to give up eating animals entirely and have switched to a plant-based diet. A new study recently came out entitled Bacon, Hot Dogs And Processed Meats Are Carcinogenic & Cause Cancer, Says WHO.
However, there is a lot of conflicting information out there over whether or not a plant-based diet is better, or if you do need meat and other animal products to thrive. I think one thing is clear, if anything at all, people should be eating way less meat. We do not need to eat meat with every meal and our portions could be a whole lot smaller when we do. Unfortunately some people, just simply enjoy meat way too much to even consider quitting or cutting back as an option. But, here’s a question: if you could find an alternative that tasted, looked, felt, smelled and cooked just like real meat or other animal products and was a bit cheaper and healthier for you, would you choose that instead?
Amazing Egg Free Alternatives That Are Making Headlines
Hampton Creek is a company based out of San Francisco that has recently found huge success with their plant-based products like “Just Mayo” and “Just Cookie Dough” that utilize plant proteins in place of eggs. They are currently working on a plant-based scrambled egg alternative, even though this is a bit tougher to achieve. “It is much easier to create a cookie dough without an egg than it is to create a scrambled egg without an egg.”
According to the firm’s boss, Josh Tetrick, “Change happens by making something so delicious and so affordable, everyone chooses it.”
The main goal of Hampton Creek is it to create delicious, healthy, sustainable, economically better alternatives to various animal products that are on the market today.

Threatening The Current System?
Some companies are naturally, feeling very threatened by this company. Former American Egg Board CEO, JoAnne Ivy has stepped down early, according to the Associated Press, after trying to convince the major US grocery chain Whole Foods to take Just Mayo off of their shelves.
Just last year consumer goods giant Unilever, sued Hampton Creek with the claim that they should not be allowed to call their product “mayo” because it does not contain eggs. Unilever also complained that the plant-based product had taken market share away from its well-known brand Hellmann’s, which is made with eggs. Andrew Zimmern, a celebrity chef who had preferred Just Mayo over Hellmann’s in a blind taste-test, even started an online petition to get Unilever to drop the lawsuit. It managed to gather over 100,000 signatures!

Completely Realistic Meat Alternative? Enter “Beyond Meat”
Beyond Meat is brand of alternative meat products, made from plants, that provides you with the same level of meaty goodness that you would expect from a burger, chicken breast or meatball, but without the same repercussions. Apparently these burgers sizzle and sweat just like the real deal. The company’s CEO, Ethan Brown, says: “We’re smart enough now to understand the architecture and composition of a piece of muscle.” In understanding this, they have the knowledge that it takes to make a simulated meat product that still has that fleshy quality to it. Beyond Meat makes several products including: Beast Burgers, Beyond Chicken Strips, Homestyle Tenders, Feisty Crumble and Italian Meatballs.
Last year an incidence occurred where several Whole Foods Market stores mislabeled their “chik’n” (mock chicken) salads with having real chicken and vice versa. Reportedly, not one customer complained and as far as Whole Foods employees not one could even tell the difference. This really shows how far we have come with the evolution of “fake meat” products. If only there was a way to make the term “plant-based protein” sound more appealing…
What Are They Made Of?
Many of the artificial meat products that are available on the market today aren’t the healthiest things for you to consume. It may be safe to say that some of these products are even worse than some meat products as they are overly processed and loaded with sodium, sugars and other preservatives.
An important tip to remember is, when choosing alternative meat products be sure to thoroughly read the ingredients. If you don’t know what something is, be sure to look it up to see for yourself! If we aren’t buying things loaded with chemicals and preservatives, companies will have no choice but to stop selling them. Here is the mission statement of Beyond Meat:
We believe there is a better way to feed the planet. Our mission is to create mass-market solutions that perfectly replace animal protein with plant protein. We are dedicated to improving human health, positively impacting climate change, conserving natural resources and respecting animal welfare. At Beyond Meat, we want to make the world a better place and we’re starting one delicious meal at a time.
According to their website, Beast Burgers are a unique blend that is loaded with antioxidants, iron calcium, vitamins B6, B12, D, DHA and ALA Omega 3’s. The beast burger is soy free, gluten free and Non-GMO. Check out their website for more information about their game changing products!
When you think about it, there are actually so many alternatives to meat that are so readily available to us, it’s surprising that people are still eating as much factory farmed meat as they are. It’s true that many people are disconnected from what is really going on behind factory farm doors, but I strongly believe that if anyone had to perform those same atrocities themselves on those mass produced animals, they likely would give up meat completely. Come to think of it, I don’t know anyone who actually believes that factory farming is completely okay to begin with. To learn more about factory farming click here.
This brings me back to my original question, if there were tasty, safe, ethical, sustainable, economical alternatives to animals and animal products available to you, why wouldn’t you eat them?
