It’s easy to feel insignificant living on a planet of over 7 billion people, where the choices we make — what we do and what we don’t do — are unlikely to ever impact the globe in a noticeable way.
In my own view this couldn’t be further from the truth, but I can understand the mentality behind it. There are many of us who have been actively living the change we wish to see in the world without seeing tangible results from our efforts.
One tactic that can be helpful in combating this demoralization is scaling, which involves resizing global issues and trends into manageable numbers. That is exactly what this viral video accomplishes, showing us the current state of the world through just 100 people:
While every scaled down statistic offered a valuable perspective into humanity as a whole, a number of them in particular offered real fodder for conversation.
Religion & Spirituality
Most of us live in pockets of the world dominated by a particular religious view, so seeing how much diversity continues to exist is a great reminder that there are other ways of thinking and approaching the world than our own. We are all unique and find peace through different beliefs, and the more that we remember and respect that, the more likely we are to create a world without religious conflict.

I also found it fascinating to see that the non-religious segment of humanity accounted for a larger portion than all but two of the major religions — a new development for humanity, to be sure. This certainly suggests not only how subjective spirituality can be, but also how more and more people seem to be finding it without needing any particular religious structure to get them there.
The Distribution Of Wealth
The standout statistic from this section is undoubtedly that 1% controls 50% of all the world’s money, directly in line with the 99% movement. But the part that stood out even more to me was the gap between how much was being spent among the richest and poorest groups.
While even $90/ day doesn’t sound like a lot to some, the fact that 71% are at $10 or less certainly shows just how shockingly imbalanced our society has become.
Obesity Versus Malnourishment
With so much attention being put on feeding those in need, and deservedly so, it’s remarkable to see how much of a global issue the opposite side of the spectrum has become. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, more than two-thirds of American adults are considered to be overweight or obese.
Is this also a result of wealth imbalance, or can we rather attribute it to the food choices many of us regularly make?
With water issues now hitting closer to home for many of us — thanks to the state of things in parts of Michigan — it’s crazy to think that in 2016 some of us still do not have access to clean water.
13% is an unacceptable amount, especially given the unnecessary luxuries (as shown in some of the other statistics) that so many of us use and dispose of so carelessly. Perhaps it’s time we set our priorities straight by hydrating and sheltering the world before developing the iPhone 10.
Global Wifi Zone
It was only a couple of years ago that free WiFi zones were not only incredibly rare, but also difficult to find. Now they are seemingly everywhere.
I can’t help but get a little scared when I look at the WiFi section of my phone while in my condo and see over 15 connections within range. With the amount of research showing just how harmful WiFi and the devices they connect with can be for our bodies on the rise, it’s alarming to see that 44% of us are now always connected to the web.
What impact will this have on the development and health of future generations who never experienced life without the internet and a cell phone?

Having trouble losing excess weight? This could be one of the biggest reasons why.
We know so much about food now yet much of the population is overweight and unhealthy because of the quality of our food and our perception about food.
