Too often, we focus on what separates us from everyone else. We form opinions of people’s behaviour and choices and label them like paperwork into categories of which we approve or disapprove. By focusing on everyone else and our judgements of them, we build up barriers around ourselves and miss out on the opportunity to forge deep, lasting connections with another individual.
An incredible electric connection can be felt between two people when we “look beyond borders” like participants did in Amnesty International’s latest video. This instant bond reaches beyond religion and politics.
Eye gazing is the practise of looking deeply into the eyes of another, usually for a few minutes. If you’ve never done it before, I highly suggest trying it. It feels almost like you are peering into the soul of the other person and at the same time you experience the freedom of allowing yourself to be truly seen without barriers.
Amnesty International recently released a video where refugees and Europeans gazed into each other’s eyes for four minutes. The video is an unscripted and natural account of what happens to so many people when they eye gaze.
The process certainly moved me to tears and reminds us not only of the importance of letting our guard down, but also how important it is to see others as they are instead of who we imagine them to be.
We are all human. We all have stories. We all have pain. We all need love. We are all connected.

Touch, looking into each other’s eyes, observing behaviour, listening to each other’s tone of voice are all ways that we understand one another and bond with each other. If we all connected more meaningfully with at least one person a day, we’d change the state of the world.
Eye gazing is a fun and deeply moving way to connect to someone. If you haven’t tried it before, set a few minutes aside and try it with a loved one or even a stranger. It’s normal to giggle for the first minute or two but once that subsides, something amazing happens and you have to experience it for yourself.
