Frankenfood, otherwise known as Genetically Modified Food, has slipped under the radar by infiltrating our food supply and products for more than 30 years.

In recent years, people have become more aware of its existence, thanks to the help of groups like March Against Monsanto, a non-profit organization which brings food activists together from all over the world. They target Monsanto in particular because of their use of bioengineering and toxic pesticides.

Chipotle is one of the few fast food chains who choose not to incorporate GMOs into their food:

Chipotle is on a never-ending journey to source the highest quality ingredients we can find. Over the years, as we have learned more about GMOs, we’ve decided that using them in our food doesn’t align with that vision. Chipotle was the first national restaurant company to disclose the GMO ingredients in our food, and now we are the first to cook only with non-GMO ingredients.

To raise even more awareness about the dangers of artificial foods, Chipotle created this lighthearted film to show how disconnected we’ve become from the earth, our food, and each other.

Disconnection

Eating in the comfort of your own home and prepping food with the people you love is a great way to promote connection between yourself, the food that nourishes you, and your loved ones.

This film explores that interconnection through the story of a young boy who believes that competing for attention will win a girl’s love. Instead it creates a rivalry between them. In craving a connection with her, he inadvertently creates disconnection instead. Perhaps Monsanto had a similar intention to begin with, to help feed people all over the world.

But this romantic quarrel turns them into angry competitors who let the quality of their food slip drastically in their quest to outdo the other.

What eventually brings them together is the recognition of how bad their food had become. They then decide to return to their roots by creating a small business with locally grown food to serve to the people of their community, creating a full circle connection between the earth and the people living upon it.
