Recently, Canadian news network City TV revealed how drastically Canadians have reduced their meat intake. Given the low population of Canada, about 35 million residents, the numbers given for vegetarians, or at least people who are aiming to cut back their consumption of animal products, is actually quite astounding.

Reasons for cutting back on meat consumption varied, from matters of compassion and feeling bad for the animals to looking out for one’s health, and also over the growing environmental concern on the impact of animal agriculture.

According to the Globe and Mail, the annual per-capita meat consumption has declined in Canada since 1999, led by a 31 percent drop in pork and a 19 percent reduction in beef, despite the fact that disposable incomes rose steadily over the same period. On the other hand, according to Statistics Canada consumption of chicken has risen 11 percent.

The video also showcases people who are protesting against the harsh punishment that was given to Anita Wright, an animal rights activist from the group Toronto Pig Save, when she gave water to thirsty and dehydrated pigs in a truck that were on their way to slaughter. We also see a glimpse of how chickens have been treated in factory farms and a clip from a trainer at Bowmanville farms abusing tigers.

Video: Meat Consumption On The Decline

As said in the video, “Data out of the University of Guelph’s food institute confirms this, fully 13 million people in Canada have reduced their consumption of meat.” Out of 35 million, that is a HUGE reduction! The video goes on to say that 37 percent of Canadians are actively looking for alternative sources of protein. It is clearly stated that animal activism has had a dramatic impact on these statistics:

“The consumer is now, clearly the new CEO of the food supply chain.”

It’s great to see that all the hard work from animal activists has clearly made a huge difference in regard to how Canadians are consuming meat on a regular basis. Activism and raising awareness about social issues are the only true ways to make a difference. If people are oblivious or ignorant to something, how can you expect them to change what they don’t know? Let this be a great example of just how powerful of a tool activism can really be!

Kudos to all of you all out there raising awareness about animal agriculture and in turn, literally changing the world! See, we can change the world, starting with raising awareness about what matters, and giving a voice to the voiceless.
