According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe sent more than half a million dollars in campaign funds and material support to the wife of an FBI official who was a part of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s personal email server. It was recently revealed that Clinton performed all of her business as Secretary of State from this server, including sharing classified information.

The Wall Street Journal called McAuliffe “an influential Democrat” with longstanding connections to Bill and Hillary Clinton. His political-action committee reportedly gave the large chunk of cash to the 2015 state Senate campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe, who is married to Andrew McCabe, currently the Deputy Director of the FBI.

Furthermore, it was reported that the Virginia Democratic Party, over which Mr. McAuliffe has extensive influence, sent another $207,788 to Dr. McCabe’s campaign in the form of mailers. This means than over $675,000 was donated to Clinton’s candidacy directly under the control of Mr. McAuliffe. “The figure represents more than a third of all the campaign funds Dr. McCabe raised in the effort,” WSJ reported.

A spokesman for McAuliffe announced he “supported Jill McCabe because he believed she would be a good state senator. This is a customary practice for Virginia governors… Any insinuation that his support was tied to anything other than his desire to elect candidates who would help pass his agenda is ridiculous.”

In a statement, the FBI said that during his wife’s campaign Mr. McCabe “played no role, attended no events, and did not participate in fundraising or support of any kind. Months after the completion of her campaign, then-Associate Deputy Director McCabe was promoted to Deputy, where, in that position, he assumed for the first time, an oversight role in the investigation into Secretary Clinton’s emails.”

And FBI officials revealed that after meeting with the governor on March 7, McCabe reached out for “ethics advice” from the bureau and took it, steering clear of involvement with public corruption cases in Virginia, as well as all campaign happenings.

The only reason McCabe’s management of the Clinton email scandal in 2016 wasn’t considered a conflict of interest is that his wife’s campaign had already wrapped up by then, and McAuliffe was not involved in the email probe at all, according to officials.

“Once I decided to run,” Dr. McCabe explained, “my husband had no formal role in my campaign other than to be a supportive husband to me and our children. As a federal official…everyone who participated in our campaign understood and respected that he could not participate.”

The FBI has been investigating McAuliffe for months, including “a probe that includes an examination of donations” completed for a Chinese businessman. His lawyers have refused to admit to the scandal, however, but the FBI agents involved in the investigation are looking to pinpoint how and when McAuliffe potentially violated a law that requires people to register as agents of a foreign entity.
