I often find myself caught up between a cluster of self-help books, and when that happens, I either take an eternity to finish them or don’t finish them at all. Sometimes, however, there are certain books that prevail among the rest that I just cannot. stop. reading.
The books I have listed below certainly aren’t exclusive to females. In fact, I think it’s important and healthy for any male to take the time to learn more about their female counterparts. The information these books present isn’t your typical self-help for women fare. Instead of a book telling you how to ‘look good,’ these offer insight into why you aren’t feeling good.
Some common themes you’ll notice in these books include food, chemicals, pesticides, and of course, hormones.
Sweetening the Pill
Holly Grigg-Spall is the author of Sweetening the Pill: or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control, a book detailing the dangerous effects that contraception has on our health. What most women who take the pill don’t consciously realize is that they are actually taking a prescribed medication, every day.
“Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks – just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes.”
This book garnered the attention of Ricki Lake, former TV host and executive producer of The Business of Being Born, who decided to create a whole documentary on the subject.
“This documentary will explore what technological and medical advancement might mean for birth control in the 21st Century. Together we will investigate, informatively and realistically, the next women’s health revolution.”
To help fund the film, they launched a Kickstarter campaign, which quickly saw them reach their goal of raising $100,000 through the support of 1,750 backers. They ended up raising $119,884 in total.
We’ve written about the dangers of birth control quite a few times, and you can read two of the articles here and here. We also covered another alternative to birth control in the article “Female Birth Control: This Might Be The Best & Safest Way I’ve Ever Seen.”
From the book…
The sex hormone cycle regulates 150 bodily systems, all of which are suppressed by hormonal contraceptives and all of which are interrelated to all other body systems (including the endocrine, neurologic and immunologic systems). Therefore hormonal contraceptives impact:
Memory and concentration
Blood glucose levels
Thyroid and adrenal function
Skin color and texture
Brain wave patterns
Visual, auditory and olfactory acuity Concentrations of vitamins
When Alisa Vitti was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and told there was virtually no cure for this illness, she made it her duty to understand why this developed in her body and how she could treat it — for good.
After years of trial and error and trying cocktails of herbs and supplements, Alisa decided to start from the beginning and do what she does best, research. Through this process, she came to understand that food would be her best medicine, and in order to better understand the body, in addition to her endocrinology and hormone studies, she delved deeper into Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), functional nutrition, and chronology. These would eventually become the foundation of her practice of helping women heal all their hormonal issues, from infertility and PCOS to low sex drive and painful periods.
WomanCode has helped to transform the lives of thousands of women, and since Alisa can’t physically treat women in every country, this book has been the perfect avenue for women to better understand their bodies for further healing.
Her five-step program, otherwise known as the FLO Protocol, works to:
- stabilize blood sugar
- nurture your adrenals
- support your organs of elimination and reproduction
- tap into your feminine energy

Anthony Williams has been making his mark in self healing ever since releasing Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal, an insightful book that delves into the many chronic illnesses that people are battling with every day. He calls out the medical community for not taking responsibility and refusing to admit that they do not fully understand these illnesses, all while still choosing to treat the symptoms of these illnesses through drugs that further harm the body.
His work is highly controversial, as he claims to gain these insights from what he calls Spirit. Some people might easily dismiss his claims if it weren’t for the fact that, through his healing methods, people are actually finding relief and curing their illnesses.
In regards to women’s health, he covers the reason why women are suffering from seemingly hormone related ailments like menopause:
There are additional factors that can lead to the symptoms attributed to menopause. Around the same time that women first began experiencing these symptoms, three other phenomena were also at play. First, people in the US were experiencing increased radiation exposure due to fallout from the World War II bombings in Japan. At the same time, there was an explosion of DDT (i.e., pesticide) exposure. In the 1940s, DDT was used everywhere: on crops and food, in parks, and people even sprayed it on their own gardens. By 1950, DDT use was at its height, and the central nervous systems and livers of countless women had become overloaded with the toxin. The third factor was Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The first generation of women complaining of menopausal symptoms had been born in the early 1900s, just as EBV was beginning to encroach upon the population. EBV typically enters a woman when she is young, then spends decades building itself up to the point where symptoms emerge. So if a woman was born in 1905 and had contracted EBV as a child, by 1950 she would begin to experience symptoms of this viral infection. In other words, the fact that symptoms manifested around the age of menopause was a coincidence. Today, rather than waiting several decades to strike until a woman is in her 40s or 50s, some viral strains and toxic loads are now affecting women in their 30s, 20s, and even in their teens.
Please refer to our article “The Medical Medium: What May Be The Root of Modern Medical Mysteries” to learn more about the Epstein Barr- Virus (EBV), or pick up Medical Medium to learn even more about how EBV is the source of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, lupus, Lyme disease, tinnitus, vertigo, and much more.
All of our bodies are wondrous machines, constantly working for us to further connect us with the universe, each other, and ourselves. In our modern world, we are endlessly bombarded by environmental factors that affect our ability to lead a vibrant and healthy life, but it’s important to know that we can always mitigate these harms by just taking the time to not only educate ourselves, but also by applying what we learn. We are all physically different and that alone is a beautiful thing, but what this also means is that what may work for one person may not for someone else. Take the time to better understand your body and pay attention to the signs it offers. Practice patience and kindness, and most importantly, listen. Your body is speaking to you every day, so allow yourself some time to slow down and listen.
