The healing power of psychedelics has been becoming more and more mainstream as of late as the many potential benefits of various substances have been observed. It seems that the more these psychedelic substances are studied, the more benefits are found and the potential to heal is very real.
Ayahuasca, for example, has shown to alleviate depression in many users. Iboga has proved to be extremely beneficial for those suffering from opiate dependency and helping users to let go of their addiction to heroin and/or painkillers. MDMA has recently become an FDA approved treatment for those who are suffering from PTSD. This list goes on and on and on. The movement to bring light to the potential benefits of these substances is making leaps and bounds and it seems that the healing capacity that comes from psychedelic substances is limitless.
If you’re like me, you may be thinking how amazing it is that many of these substances have been put on the earth for a reasons, and it’s no wonder that their uses, and insights they provide to the users are much needed during this time. It’s great to see organizations such as MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association For Psychedelic Studies) pioneering this revolutionary research.
Let’s Talk About Psilocybin
Psilocybin is the active ingredient in ‘magic mushrooms’ or ‘shrooms,’ and is a similar structure to the molecule DMT, which is found inside the human brain and many other living things – plants and animals on the planet. Despite the psychedelic trip that one can experience from these mushrooms, they are magic for many other reasons. Research has shown that psilocybin can help with treatment of alcohol addiction. A study also observed that 80% of smokers who participated managed to stop smoking for 6 months after their three sessions with psilocybin. The most popular answer as to the reason behind their ability to abstain from tobacco use was that “by changing the way you orient yourself toward the future, such that you now act in your long-term holistic benefit, rather than acting in response to immediate desire.”
Many people believe that psilocybin can also trigger neurogenesis, which essentially means rewiring and remapping of neurons and the growth of new brain cells. Surprisingly, up until recently it was thought to be impossible. There are many potential benefits of psilocybin, that has become clear, but in many cases it is often still very difficult to study the potential, because it is considered a schedule 1 controlled substance in the U.S., making them very illegal. Funnily enough, magic mushrooms can be found growing wild all over North America, and have been being used ceremoniously by Native Americans for centuries.
Paul Stamets, founder of Fungi Perfecti, popular author and leader in the new wave of technologies harnessing the inherent power of mushrooms had his own life-changing experience after a session with psilocybin. In the video below, Paul recounts his congenital stuttering habit and the astonishing healing event that cured him of his perpetual stuttering issue. His trip consisted of a fractal lightning storm, an oak tree, a mantra and last but certainly not least, a cure for his congenital stuttering habit.
Although this evidence is only anecdotal, and other than this one instance there is really no other research to back up this claim, but that certainly does not mean that it’s not worth looking into.
While under the influence of psilocybin, especially while setting an intention, or at least doing it with the intent of finding out more about yourself or looking at any potential blocks or challenges you may have, mushrooms can provide you with a sort of outsider’s perspective into your life. When you are caught up in your stuff all the time, sometimes it’s difficult to see the answers that may be right in front of you. Allowing yourself the space to step outside yourself and reflect back on your life can open up a whole new level of awareness. I personally, could see how a session with magic mushrooms could help alleviate something like stuttering. Even at the physical level, it could just switch that thing in the brain that needs to be switched to alleviate this issue.
*Disclaimer* As I said above, psilocybin is still illegal in many parts of the world, so just be aware of that if you are thinking about doing it. The research that is being conducted with these substances is being done in controlled environments with trained professionals. More research needs to be done to prove the efficacy of psilocybin for treatment of issues such as stuttering. Use discretion.
