For some reason, in many cultures there is a stigma around female sexuality or women enjoying sex. It may seem like an archaic way of thinking, but it it is still very much a thing that our society is faced with everyday. It’s not only culture that is contributing to this issue, but the media as well. What’s so wrong with women enjoying sex, you might ask, well, nothing at all. It’s time to open up this conversation and get people talking about this issue because we all know ignoring it will not make it go away.

We should be celebrating sexuality — for men and women. So many things are progressing and moving forward and it’s time for this to be one of them as well. Especially when so many women find it so difficult to properly express themselves and their needs. Perhaps the more we talk about this issue the easier it will become and people will truly begin to see that it is something that needs our attention. Here’s hoping!

In “The O Project,” a photo series aimed at  highlighting female pleasure, Brazilian photographer Marcos Alberti captured women of various ethnicities before, during, and after climax.

Alberti promised to present female sexuality in a way that’s never been done before.

This campaign was run alongside sexual wellbeing brand Smile Makers

During the shoot, everything from the waist down was hidden from view — even from the photographer, in case you were wondering.

The photographer believes all women deserve to be in control of their sexuality, no matter their background.

This lighthearted and playful series definitely does what it set out to, showcase women experiencing pleasure. What’s so wrong with that?

Even though attitudes are changing, female pleasure remains underrepresented and misunderstood. In the media, sex is generally defined by male pleasure and the male gaze. If he reaches orgasm, the act is considered sex, but if a sexual act is performed on a woman, it’s not always perceived this way.

Why the Stigma?

Foreplay is also conspicuously absent from television and film. Sex is almost always penetrative and both partners usually finish at the same time, which is rarely the case in real life and sets unrealistic expectations for both men and women.

“[The media] impacts what we think of as normal and how we respond to the sexualities of those around us,” said Kellie Herson, an MA and gender studies Ph.D Candidate at ASU. “It not only encourages people to internalize particular kinds of shame, but it encourages people to shame others for any kind of sexual expression outside what is portrayed as ‘normal’ in our popular culture.”

Unfortunately, many women end up believing that if they don’t climax before or at the same time as their partner, something is wrong with them. They might feel embarrassed because they aren’t complying with the version of female sexuality the media portrays as ‘normal.’ As a result, many women just accept they can’t be satisfied instead of communicating with their partners.

Pornography only worsens this problem, since all the emphasis is put on the man reaching orgasm. Women either climax easily and from penetration alone (and before the man) or not at all. If a young boy learns everything he knows about sex from mainstream media and pornography, both he and his future partners are being set up for unhappiness.

Let’s hope this photo series accomplishes its mission of helping to reduce the stigma around female pleasure, because it’s a beautiful thing!
