Are Angels Watching Our World? A Powerful Look Inside The Claims

Published

on

Have you ever wondered if angels really watch over the world? If so, what does this actually mean and what is the true nature of their assistance? It has been said throughout history that non-physical beings act as guides and provide assistance in times of great need. The interpretations of this have varied depending on the source, whether it be from religious scriptures to new age spiritual texts. There are powerful implications to be understood here, so demystifying this subject is a worthy pursuit. I would like to share with you a unique and profound message that may shed some more light and clarity on this topic, for I believe this understanding to be of vital importance at this time. It can really help us to understand the bigger picture in life, where the world is going, what is at stake, and how we fit into the grander scheme of things.

For the past 31 years, a man named Marshall Vian Summers has been receiving communications from the divine in a series of mysterious angelic encounters that started in the deserts of the American Southwest. Summers is a humble and sincere man and his story is fascinating to read. These revelations have grown vaster and vaster in scope and now amount to more than 9000 pages in total. They are profound, challenging, and direct, written in clear English that can be understood by all. These messages are now known as a New Message from God and have been translated into more than 19 languages and are being studied in more than 87 countries around the world. I believe they are very important to consider at this time. They address the most pressing issues that humanity is facing now and in the future: facing the impending Great Waves of change and addressing our open emergence into a competitive universe teeming with intelligent life.

“Spirituality is fundamentally a quest for freedom—freedom from certain things and freedom for certain things. Seen in this way, the picture becomes more complete. For you have a greater destiny in the world, a greater purpose for being here, a purpose that you are not living now, despite your definitions and proclamations. It is to free you from the life that you are living now to prepare you for a greater life in service to the world that represents the core and essence of all spiritual development.” — New Message Wiki, Quotes about Freedom

These Messages have given me the clarity and understanding of the bigger picture that I have been searching for for many years. The practices known as the Steps to Knowledge offer a powerful preparation to cultivate our deeper spiritual mind and potential in an authentic manner. Developing qualities like stillness, discernment, objectivity, compassion, and strength go a long way towards being effective in this world. I pray that you will see the importance and power of the following message and give it due consideration in relation to your life and your greater purpose. I warn you that the Messages may challenge and overwhelm you at first, as they did for me, but I urge you to press onwards and give them a chance. For there is real potency and potential here, along with the promise to transform your life in a genuine way that allows you to truly be of service and fulfill your mission here on Earth. Thank you for letting me share. May the power and presence of Knowledge within you be your guide during the times ahead.

The Assembly

As revealed to God’s Messenger

There is a great Assembly, the Angelic Presence that watches over this world, and has watched over this world for a very long time. How different this is, however, from people’s notions and beliefs, the way that such great Beings have been portrayed in the past in your books on religion and in the testimony of certain people.

God is not managing the world. God is not running the climate. God is not moving the blood through your veins or pouring the waters over the cliffs or germinating the seeds in the ground—for that was all set into motion at the beginning of time.

But God has assigned a Presence to watch over the world through all of its chaotic and tragic encounters and episodes in history—watching for those individuals who show greater promise; bringing things into the world at key turning points in humanity’s evolution and sending one of their own into the world to bring a new teaching and a new understanding to change the awareness of humanity and to alter, if possible, the course of humanity in a positive way.

Those who you honor as the great Messengers, the great Saints, the great Teachers—such as the Jesus, the Buddha and the Mohammad—come from this Assembly, you see. But when they are in the world, they are human beings. What distinguishes them is that they are here on a greater mission with a greater set of responsibilities and a greater accountability to those who sent them. Their lives are trials. Their lives are demanding. It is not a journey for the faint of heart or for those seeking pleasure and repose here on Earth.

The Assembly watches over the world—listening, waiting for those requests that are truly authentic and represent an honest appeal, particularly if they mark a turning point in a person’s life, particularly if they show a greater demonstration of a desire for contact—not borne of ambition, not borne of foolishness or experimentation. It is the signal that someone is ready to begin to awaken. Only Heaven knows what this signal is, what it sounds like, what it means and how it should be regarded.

For you here on Earth, the Assembly is like Heaven—a bridge between this world and your Ancient Home, from which you have come and to which you will return eventually. Everyone in the world, everyone in the universe living in separation in the physical reality, will return to their Ancient Home eventually. But while they are here, they are prisoners to their own intentions. They are prisoners to their cultures and their nations, in a universe where freedom is so very rare. Yet each has been sent here for a greater purpose, a potential, a seed of wisdom, a possibility that, given the right circumstances and given their own honesty and awareness, a greater life can be initiated.

Every world where sentient beings have evolved or have migrated and colonized in the universe, there will be an Assembly there—a great Assembly or a small Assembly, depending on the number of individuals and the nature and conditions of that culture and nation in the universe.

It is a Plan on a scale you cannot even imagine. Your religions cannot account for it. Your theology is far too limited in scope to encompass something of this magnitude. Try as you may to interpret the signs and the symbols of life on Earth, you cannot interpret this. Your intellect was not created to interpret something on this scale.

But within you is the power of Knowledge that God has placed there, a deeper intelligence, a deeper mind. It is this mind that the Assembly is waiting for. For if this deeper mind within you can emerge within the context of your life and circumstances and be accepted and followed and received, you begin a new journey in life. Only in this regard can it be said that you would be born again in the world. Only in this regard would that be true, meaningful and efficacious. Members of the Assembly will attend to certain individuals who are making a greater contribution to the world, but only if the deeper Knowledge within those individuals is sending the message—the message the Assembly is waiting for and looking for among those who live in separation.

God allows you to be in separation. God allows you to suffer. God allows you to make mistakes because that is why you have chosen separation—to have this freedom. But since there is no real alternative to Creation, your existence here is only partially real. It is still connected to Creation, but is a changing, evolving environment—an environment where your life is temporary and greatly challenged and greatly endangered by many things, where error and failure will be the consequence of living without this Knowledge to guide you.

God allows this to happen because you were made to be free. You are even free to try to not be who you really are. You are even that free. But you can never succeed in separation because Knowledge lives within you. It is the part of you that has never left God and still responds to the power and presence of the Lord of Creation and of Creation itself.

Think of your religious teachings in the world—the stories and the vast array of ideas associated with these and consider them in light of what We are saying to you here today. For We are giving you the big picture of your life. See the contrast and you will begin to see that you must embark on a new journey. Your old ideas of religion and spirituality can only serve you to a certain degree. Beyond that, they must be set aside, for only God knows the way to return. Only God knows the meaning of your true existence and the specific purpose that has brought you into the world at this time under these circumstances.

The intellect must bow down eventually. It can only follow when attending a greater reality. This requires humility. This requires surrendering, over time, to the power and the presence that lives within you, that can only respond to your Source.

The Assembly allows everything to happen on Earth. Unless their presence is required and requested with the greatest sincerity, they will not interfere. Only at a great turning point when a New Message is meant to be given to the world, will they provide humanity a new understanding and a greater awareness. This will occur in response to great and potentially devastating change in the world. That is why the great Revelations are only given at certain critical turning points in the evolution of human civilization. They cannot be fabricated. They cannot be invented. They cannot even be imagined, though many people have tried, of course.

It is upon these that the great traditions have been built. But it is also upon these that the great traditions have not been able to follow the spirit of the Revelation that initiated their existence in the beginning. God knows that without Knowledge, people would be in error regarding these things and would make many mistakes along the way. It is the condition of living in separation.

Once you begin to discover the power and presence of Knowledge within yourself, you begin to end the separation within yourself—between your worldly mind and idea of yourself and the greater intelligence that lives within you, an intelligence you had before you came into the world and which you will rediscover once you leave.

This requires a great resonance with life and not merely a complex theology or philosophy. The Angelic Assembly does not respond to those things. But at a great turning point, such as is occurring in the world today, one of their own will come into the world. One of their own will be sent to face the tribulation of being the Messenger—the great difficulty, the great mystery, the great uncertainty, the great Presence that will abide with them as they go through the process of becoming an adult human being, with yet little awareness of their greater destiny and purpose until their calling has been initiated.

No one understands the life of the Messenger, but everyone can receive the gifts of the Messenger, which are gifts that are greater than any person could ever give to the world—gifts far more long lasting, pervasive, powerful and inspiring than any person could ever create or invent. People may have compelling ideas, but nothing that can transform the life of a person in the most natural and beautiful way. That must come from Heaven. It must come through the Assembly that interprets the will of God. For God of the universe is far too great to be preoccupied with this world—the God of countless galaxies, dimensions and Creation beyond the physical manifestation, which is even greater, so great that there is no possibility that you could comprehend its scope and its great inclusion in life.

The Lord of a billion, billion, billion races and more is certainly beyond any theological principle that has ever been created in this world. But it is part of God’s New Revelation, you see, because humanity is emerging into a Greater Community of life in the universe and now must begin to think of God in a greater panorama. For to understand what God is doing in this world, you must understand what God is doing in the universe. For the first time, the Revelation concerning this is being given to a humanity that stands at the threshold of space, to a humanity that stands at the threshold of destroying the environment of the world and driving itself into ruin and catastrophe. It is the greatest threshold humanity has ever faced and the most consequential.

Everything will change and is changing even at this moment. Because of this great turning point, God has sent through the Angelic Presence and Assembly a New Revelation for the world—a Revelation about life in the universe and the work of God everywhere, not based upon a tribe or a region or upon a natural phenomenon or upon the limited history of a group or a nation, but upon the reality of life everywhere.

This greater panorama gives you the greatest opportunity to recognize the power and the presence that lives within you and encourages you to use your intellect to support this realization, for this is what it was created to do, and this is its highest service to you.

You will not know the names of those in the Assembly though they might provide a name at some point for some person to help them to respond. Their names are meaningless, for they are both individuals and they are one—a phenomenon you cannot comprehend with the intellect, which can only think of things of this world.

At the time of great Revelation, the Assembly speaks as one Voice. It speaks through one of its members, but they are all speaking at once, a phenomenon that you cannot really consider. It is too marvelous. It is too phenomenal. It speaks beyond your notions of reality entirely. You can only imagine individuals in the universe, but the Assembly is one and many and one, because they are so close to Heaven, you see, where the many are one, and the one are many.

Your focus in life is not to become enamored with the Assembly or to concentrate on the Assembly, for their purpose is to engage you with the reclamation of Knowledge that lives within you. For you must be the one who chooses. You must be the one who faces the consequences, the difficulties and the blessings of your decisions. You are the one who must choose to receive or to decline the great offering. You are the one who must be responsible for everything that you do. So do not go around telling people that God is guiding you to do this or that, for that is irresponsible. You must say, “I am doing this because I feel it is the thing that must be done.” Claim no other authority, for you do not know for sure.

You cannot know the Assembly or the power of the presence that lives within you unless Knowledge has been activated within you and is beginning to emerge powerfully in your life. Do not create a romance about your angelic experience, whatever it may be, whether it be real or fabricated because it is all about the emergence of Knowledge within you, you see. The Assembly is only concerned with this, for until this happens, you are not reliable. You are not responsible. You are not courageous. You are not authentic. You are still subject to the persuasions of the world and to your own fears and preferences. You are too weak.

That is why you must be elevated within yourself through a process of great transformation that can only be initiated by the Assembly. You cannot initiate yourself. You can meditate for twenty years and not know of the power and the presence of Knowledge. It is your prayer given now with the greatest strength, urgency and authenticity that calls the Assembly to you. You pray not for advantages or merely protection from harm. You pray to be redeemed, not knowing what this means, not trying to understand the redemption, not thinking you know how to purify yourself. Only the Assembly knows this. It is a marvelous thing, you see. It is the greatest miracle of all. It is the miracle that creates every other miracle.

God has now sent a New Message into the world to prepare humanity to face a new world experience and environment and to meet the great challenge of preserving and uniting human civilization. God has sent the great Revelation into the world to prepare humanity for its encounter with life in the universe—the greatest event in human history and the one that poses the greatest challenges, difficulties and opportunities for the human family.

A Messenger is in the world. He has been in preparation for a very long time to receive the Revelation, for it is the largest Revelation that has ever been given to humanity—given now to an educated world, a literate world, a world of global communication, a world of global awareness, to a certain degree. It is the first time in history that a Message has been given to the whole world all at once, for it must reach the world in a short period of time to prepare humanity for the great change that is coming to the world and for the meaning of its encounter with intelligent life in the universe, which is occurring in the world already.

None of God’s previous Revelations can prepare you for these things, for that was not their purpose or their design. They were given to build human awareness, human civilization and human conscience and the ethics that could possibly guide humanity to a greater unity and a greater power in the world. Human civilization has been created and though it is very imperfect, full of corruption, division and error, it nonetheless has great promise. If you knew the conditions of life in the universe around you, you would see this great promise. But you cannot see this yet. You do not have this vantage point. But the Assembly sees this, of course, and that is why great emphasis is being given to this world, to prepare for this great threshold. So much is being given now, through the process of Revelation.

The Messenger faces great difficulties, the same difficulties all the previous Messengers faced—disbelief, antagonism, rejection and ridicule. People cannot see that the greatest event in the world is occurring in their midst. They think it is a violation of their ideas or a challenge to their beliefs. They think it will undermine their wealth, their power and their prestige in the world when in fact it offers the greatest promise of redemption they could ever receive and the greatest preparation for a future that will be unlike the past in so many ways.

The Assembly watches and guides the Messenger, for his importance in the world cannot be underestimated. His importance in the world cannot be overestimated. The Assembly will speak through him to bring the Revelation into the world. They will speak as one because the Message is everything. If this can be recognized by enough people, heeded and followed by enough people, humanity will have the power to turn away from disintegration and endless conflict and war to build a new foundation for the future.

The Revelation has given the vision for this greater world for humanity, but it will be a very different world. It will require great power, courage and honesty to create it and to sustain it in a universe where there are powerful forces and where freedom is rare. Only God knows how this can be done. Only the Assembly understands these things.

Your task now is to learn to receive and to take the Steps to Knowledge so that you may find your true foundation in life, to challenge your ideas, to resolve dilemmas from the past, to forgive yourself and others and to look upon the world without rejection and condemnation, for it is this world that will call forth from you, in time, your greater gifts and your greater role.

There is so much to unlearn here, so much to reconsider. You have to be humble enough to do this. If you think you know the truth, if you think you know God’s will, if you think you know what the universe is, your chances of discovering the truth will be very small.

The Assembly watches over the world. Call to the Assembly—not casually, for they will not hear you. Not to fulfill your ambitions, your dreams or your fantasies, for they will not hear you. You must pray with your heart and your soul. Only then can your voice reach them, for they only know what is true, honest and pure. They cannot be manipulated. They cannot be corrupted. They cannot be influenced. You cannot make a deal with them. You must have the strength to receive their counsel in time and carry it forth without compromise and without corruption. That is how strong you will have to be, to be part of a greater force for good in the world.

People will think, “Oh, this is too much for me to consider. The challenge is too great!” But We say no. It is appropriate for who you are and why you are in the world and who sent you here. You think of yourself in such a demeaning way. You have degraded to a pathetic state when you think like this. You do not know your strength, your power or your purpose, which only Knowledge within you can provide.

The Assembly watches and waits for those who can respond to the Message that God is sending into the world at this moment, for the Messenger is now coming forth to speak, to proclaim and to teach the Revelation. He has been withheld for a long time until the Message was complete. Now it is complete, and the world is in great need of it, greater than you can realize at this moment.

The Messenger represents the Assembly though he is a human being and though he is imperfect, for all human beings are imperfect. He has made mistakes, but all the great Messengers have made mistakes. It is the power of Heaven within him that is his strength, that is his banner, that is his shield. You can destroy his body, but you cannot destroy his Message. And you cannot destroy what he is bringing into the world and the power and the presence that has sent him here, the power and the presence that waits for you to respond. For the gift is now before you, and Heaven watches and waits to see who can receive, who can recognize, who can take the Steps to Knowledge and receive the gift of a greater life in a world that grows darker and more uncertain with each passing day.

When Marilyn Manson Speaks, This Is Why We Should Listen

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

To those who have not heard Marilyn Manson speak, many may conclude on appearance alone that he has nothing meaningful to say.

  • Reflect On:

What could be the value for people on their spiritual journey to examine the practices and words of someone who so starkly embodies the paradox of darkness and light?

For many people, Marilyn Manson should not be seen or heard. The very essence of his intentional persona–dark, irreverent, grotesque–makes many recoil in horror and disgust. Yet perhaps that is the very reason we may find value in listening to what he has to say.

Fans of his goth-shock rock show aside, individuals seeking to ascend the ladder of consciousness may be able to see in Marilyn Manson a part of their own suppressed fear and darkness turned inside-out. Coming to terms with Marilyn Manson could in some ways help us come to terms with ourselves.

To begin with, most people who have heard Marilyn Manson speak are aware that he is clearly not as he appears to be. In fact, he relishes embodying the paradox of darkness and light like few others. He is thoughtful, soft-spoken, and usually sprinkles in his disarming wit when we are least expecting it. What is undeniable is that he has given much contemplation to the philosophy of life, not in the academic sense as much as with regards to the embodiment of spiritual principles he believes in.

The Rejection Of Religious Dogma

One of the mainstays of Manson’s spiritual paradigm is the recognition that the fundamentalist side of Christianity within Western society is not going to lead to any healing or growth on the part of human individuals. This is because the rituals of Christianity, like going to church and repeating phrases mindlessly, only serve to keep our personal darkness hidden from us. These practices may temporarily assuage our trepidation about our inner chaos, but this is gained at the cost of relinquishing our sense of power to heal ourselves. In the video below, Manson touches upon his views about true spiritual practice:

I think church has very little to do with spirituality. I think it’s something you have to find in yourself, it’s about expressing your deepest fears and emotions, and putting it in something. It’s not about living in fear, and praying, and hoping you’re not going to go to hell, that’s not very spiritual to me.

Manson makes an important distinction between the teachings of Jesus and the trappings of fundamentalist Christianity, and it is a point of discernment that is certainly worth contemplating. He considers himself to be aligned with many of Jesus’ teachings and even suggests in his usual irreverent way that his own life and the life of Jesus have many similarities:

advertisement - learn more

Usually people hate what they’re afraid of, it’s in the classic story, I think that even kinda goes back to Jesus, you know, they were afraid, didn’t understand him, so they killed him. I think the same thing exists in music, you know, maybe I should just become a Christian, and make them all happy, but, I think if I found Jesus, which–I didn’t know he was lost in the first place–if I did, I don’t think he would probably be that much different than me, you know, he’s a long-haired guy that likes to dress sexy. A lot of chicks were into him.

It’s not that different from what I do, you know, that probably horrifies Christians more than anything to hear that, but, I don’t disagree with a lot of the ideals that he was trying to get across. I just don’t like the way people abuse them to exploit others, and make, even children, feel guilty for having imagination or wanting to be individuals.

It is certainly thought-provoking to imagine how a dark shock-rocker sees similarities between himself and the pure-white savior of mankind. After all, Manson is a strong advocate of Aliester Crowley’s Law of Thelema, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” Does this not contradict the Golden Rule that was espoused by Jesus, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”?

Walking The Knife’s Edge

Not necessarily. But we need to be able to walk the knife’s edge in order to see how these two aspects can co-exist. And as you come to understand how these aspects can coexist, you are able to resolve the paradox named Marilyn Monroe Charles Manson.

Manson’s rejection of Christianity is based on his own experience that virtues like individuality, self-expression, and creativity are repressed in orthodox Christian practice. Certainly Friedrich Nietzsche, who Manson greatly admires, had the same condemnation for the institution that was the Catholic Church, where he criticizes the church for its attack on individual passion, desire, and by extension life itself. As Nietzsche says in his book Twilight of the Idols,

The church fights passion with excision in every sense: its practice, its “cure,” is castration. It never asks: “How can one spiritualize, beautify, deify a desire?” It has at all times laid the stress of discipline on extirpation–of sensuality, of pride, of the lust to rule, of avarice, of vengefulness. But an attack on the roots of passion means an attack on the roots of life: the practice of the church is hostile to life.

Manson became a flashpoint for many people because he embodied their highest hope: freedom from the restrictive structures of church and state. His popularity among his followers is in part founded on his embodiment of the emancipation of passion, desire, and individual self-expression, no matter that it is an expression of darkness more often than of light.

Humility

I won’t deny that Marilyn Manson is a troubled person that still has many inner wounds to heal, and the outward projection of that trauma can often be angry and violent. That being said, it seems clear that Manson understands the golden rule as self-evident, and when grounded, his orientation is towards being of service to other people. In general, he is humble enough not to take himself as seriously as many others do, and sees himself as a frail and fallible individual who continues searching for ways to find inner peace and fulfillment.

I like to look at all different religions, you know, I find valuable elements in, you know, Judaism, and Satanism, and Buddhism, and in Christianity as well, I think you can take different things that you can apply to your life, but if you follow anything solely, that’s as stupid as listening to everything that I have to say.

The Takeaway

Insofar as Marilyn Manson embodies a person who is willing to be vulnerable and authentically speak his mind, he inspires people to become more aware of who they are and whether or not they are living authentically. His recognition that we all must be willing to express our deepest fears and emotions, and in so doing expose them to the light of consciousness, is the reason we may be able to find some interesting clues within his provocative life about our own healing journey.

6 Signs Of Growth To Start Giving Yourself Credit For

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Most of us are our own biggest critics in life. And while that self-criticism can at times be helpful when it comes to accountability, it can also be quite detrimental if all we ever do is mentally bully ourselves.

  • Reflect On:

What does your internal dialogue primarily consist of? Are you giving yourself enough credit for how you've grown over the years, are do you instead choose to beat yourself up for what you're not?

Whether or not you find yourself regularly on the receiving end of criticism from others, most would agree that the old adage that we are our own toughest critics is true. Even when we manage to accomplish one of the many goals we set out for ourselves, it typically doesn’t take our mind very long to find something within it to criticize.

A common reason for this is that the subjective expectation that so many of us set for ourselves, both consciously and subconsciously, is perfection. And while this frame of mind may seem both ambitious and healthy, as Tony Robbins infamously reminds us:

“Perfection is the lowest standard in the world. Because if you’re trying to be perfect, you know you can’t be. So what you really have is a standard you can never achieve.”

While there are plenty of tools, such as affirmations, meditation and the emotional freedom technique, designed to help us cut back on negative thought–which has been found to take up upwards of 70% of our mental chatter–I’ve found that one of the strongest antidotes is concrete evidence of the opposite.

Start Giving Yourself Credit For Your Successes

To assist in creating this, I’ve put together a list of six signs of growth that we all need to start giving ourselves credit for:

advertisement - learn more

1. You’re Less Impacted By The Opinions Of Others

While part of this certainly comes naturally with age, the ability to genuinely be YOU regardless of what others may think, say or do about it deserves plenty of recognition. This is especially true in the social media driven world that so many of us are entrenched in, where sending and receiving criticism has never been easier.

So even if there are only certain areas of your life where you can confidently say you are not impacted by the opinions of others, each of those areas is a great accomplishment to celebrate.

2. You’re Not Afraid To Say “No”

To some of us, it comes naturally, while to others it’s one of the toughest words to say despite being only two letters and one syllable. This is especially true when it comes to situations in which it must be said to either a loved one or a figure of authority.

The ability to say ‘no’ to situations you would genuinely not be comfortable in, tasks that you do not have the capacity for, and ideas you don’t believe in, is a superpower that if you are lucky enough to boast, is worth giving yourself credit for.

3. You’re Grateful For Your Past

Whether or not a substantial portion of your past has been riddled in hardship, everything that you’ve experienced in life thus far has played a role in making you into who you are today. The ability to recognize that, by seeing the bigger picture to even the most unfortunate of situations, rather than opting to forever dwell in fear, blame or regret is quite the accomplishment.

4. You Trust The Process

One thing is for certain: no matter our age, body of experience, or list of accomplishments in life, we are all consistently a work-in-progress. The ability to recognize that and know that even a rougher today is paving the way for a smoother tomorrow, rather than overreacting to any and all hardship that comes your way is a rare trait to behold and appreciate.

5. You’re Willing To Genuinely Listen

Despite how seemingly natural listening is, it’s amazing how few of us can genuinely classify ourselves as an effective listener. Unsure as to whether or not you are? Think back on the last non-drama filled conversation that you had with a friend or colleague. When not speaking, did you actually pay attention to and process everything that was said to you? Or did you either find your mind drifting to something unrelated or consistently formulating your next response?

If you not only know how to effectively listen, but you recognize the importance of it and how much can be given and gained from it, give yourself credit for that rare skill.

6. You Celebrate Rather Than Compare Yourself To Others

No matter how accomplished you are in life, you will never be the only one to attain goals similar to those that you are striving for–thankfully! And one of the clearest indicators of growth is gauging your reaction when you first discover the successes of others.

Do you choose to be genuinely happy for them and further inspired by their feat? Or do you find yourself riddled in envy? If you are best described by the first option, then be uplifted by your ability to be a true team player.

Are You A Spiritual Narcissist?

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Narcissism, in a nutshell, is self-absorption to the extent that it will adopt any set of rationale to protect the ego which often includes a degree of self-deception. Is this happening to many in spiritual trends?

  • Reflect On:

There is authentic being, and then there is self-absorption which pretending to be authenticity, are we aware of the difference?

We humans often have a hard time finding middle ground. We may be drowning in lack of self-worth one moment, and trampling over other’s with our own self indulgence the next as we struggle to find balance. Narcissism is not simply about enjoying selfies in our social media-saturated world, it goes deeper than that.

It appears as liberation but is a trap that can ruin relationships, increase personal suffering, and keep a person from their true spiritual aspirations. Not surprisingly, increased mindfulness and compassion for this tricky human quirk is the best way to heal it.

What is Spiritual Narcissism?

The capacity to become overly self-indulgent is within all of us, and it becomes increasingly dangerous when we confuse it with spirituality. In many ways it is easy to see that all of humanity is dealing with a certain degree of self-absorption while we desecrate forests and oceans, causing plants and animals to go extinct on our material quests. In his famous book, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, Chogyam Trungpa gave a good foundation for westerners to navigate the pitfalls of our materialistic abundance.

The capacity to become overly self-indulgent is within all of us

We do not have to be ashamed of what we are. As sentient beings we have wonderful backgrounds. These backgrounds may not be particularly enlightened or peaceful or intelligent. Nevertheless, we have soil good enough to cultivate; we can plant anything in it. – Chögyam Trungpa, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism

There is a difference between ego-self and the deeper universal soul within us, differentiating the two is important. Sadly, we have spiritual philosophies and religions that have been constructed to feed the ego, inflate self-righteousness, and create division while giving justification for all manner of activities including killing, exploitation, and oppression. Ethical conduct, regardless of spirituality, requires honoring the other and the self as one with each deserving to be respected, heard, and seen with compassion.

No matter what the practice or teaching, ego loves to wait in ambush to appropriate spirituality for its own survival and gain. – Chögyam Trungpa, Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism

Finding the Antidote to Self-absorption

Narcissism, in a nutshell, is self-absorption to the extent that it will adopt any set of rationale to protect the ego which often includes a degree of self-deception. Ego is an important aspect of our selves, it is part of self-preservation but when it becomes out of balance it actually has the ability to destroy us and harm relationships.

Many spiritual practices seek to increase our ability to witness and bring mindful awareness to ego drives which allow us to master, instead of being enslaved by our ego. When ego gets too big it can be hard to swallow, yet spiritual liberation invites us to expand our sense of self beyond the ego, beyond time and space.

The goal is to find a balance between the inner experience and the outer reality. How do we embody healthy self-love without becoming an ego-maniac and hurting personal relationships? Meanwhile, self-loathing, and low self-esteem are also manifestations of ego out of balance. Selflessness can often be quite selfish, over-engagement can be as problematic as disengagement socially. Luckily we are here to find this balance through living fully, from making mistakes, and evolving our sense of self-awareness. Healthy self-awareness is the only antidote to self-absorption.

The Story of Narcissus and Echo

One day Narcissus was walking in the woods when Echo, an Oread (mountain nymph) saw him, fell deeply in love, and followed him. Narcissus sensed he was being followed and shouted “Who’s there?”. Echo repeated “Who’s there?”. She eventually revealed her identity and attempted to embrace him. He stepped away and told her to leave him alone. She was heartbroken and spent the rest of her life in lonely glens until nothing but an echo sound remained of her. Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, learned of this story and decided to punish Narcissus. She lured him to a pool where he saw his own reflection. He didn’t realize it was only an image and fell in love with it. He eventually recognized that his love could not be reciprocated and committed suicide. -Wikipedia

Since intention is subjective, a person is often understood within their community by their actions or image. This becomes extra tricky in our age of social media and the materialism that has found it’s way into yoga, meditation, and spirituality. It is possible to put on a good act, to fool those around us and ourselves (temporarily).

We can have the latest yoga clothes, read the right books and hang out with all the “cool” people, but if our actions are not grounded in a deeper spiritual practice, basic consideration for others, and respect, it is still hollow. A common analogy is the guy who everyone likes but then goes home kicks his dog, or is rude and unaccountable to his wife.

Deep spirituality makes us more sensitive to the feeling of others, encouraging an open stance of courage where we can drop our protective shields and accept the vulnerability to be seen as we are. Narcissistic sensitivity, however, is focused solely on the subtle nuances one’s own internality, and resists looking at hard, uncomfortable truths that may upset the self image. One who is narcissistically sensitive is easily offended by the “coarseness” of others, seeks to make his environment change to align with the contours of his needs, and gets angry or offended when this does not happen. -The Allure of Narcissistic Spirituality, Huffington Post

How to Identify Narcissistic Behavior

The ability to identify narcissistic behavior in yourself and others is the best way to heal it. It is not your job to diagnose others or tell them they are narcissistic if they are not interested in hearing it or healing it. However, if you draw appropriate boundaries for them you will protect yourself and encourage them to become more mindful. This is a loving and compassionate way to handle narcissism.

It is always healthy to make boundaries and speak your truth in a loving and compassionate way. Whether the narcissist hears it or not is out of your control. Common responses from narcissists will include belittling your feelings, a hollow apology without effort to modify behavior, or ignoring you altogether. Basically, they will use any excuse they can in order to not look at it, or to make the situation your fault. This is your cue to make appropriate boundaries for yourself.

Within yourself be open and receptive when others tell you that you have been inconsiderate of them. Accepting constructive feedback from loved ones is a great way to keep a balance between internal needs and external relationships. This is also how we grow as individuals.

Evolving Unhealthy Patterns

Hopefully, this will help you navigate tough interpersonal relationships and also better yourself. It is a beautiful thing that psychology is allowing us to have terms to identify and evolve unhealthy patterns emotionally. As we learn to live in community, we learn many aspects of love. This is how we help ourselves and those around us grow!
