Feeling Bloated? How To Improve Your Digestion & End Bloating

Published

on

Your digestive system is so important for a number of reasons. Making sure you take care of it and are optimizing its health is something we should all be aware of.

As children many of us did not learn much more about digestion other than “chew before you swallow” and “don’t go swimming after you eat or you’ll get cramps and drown”. However digestion is much more complex than that and is a topic that often times gets overlooked in western medicine. Due to a lack of knowledge the vast majority of us have compromised digestive systems leading to the manifestation of many illnesses and symptoms.

Bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, stomach-aches, nausea, heartburn, and low energy are all signs and symptoms of problems in the digestive system. Most illness and disease actually begin from a dis-functioning digestive system. That is why we primarily focus on healing this system of the body. When your digestion begins working properly it will support the rest of the body to heal and restore itself.

3 Biggest Concerns

Three of the biggest concerns when it comes to a compromised digestive system are energy loss, the inability to properly absorb nutrients and a backed up lymphatic system.

If our colons are backed up then our digestive system is constantly using energy to try and work it through. Our lymphatic system then slows down because a large amount of the body’s waste leaves through the colon. This causes a back-up of toxins that are trying to leave the body and they begin to build throughout our cells (fat=backed up lymphatic system=stored toxins). When we are backed up and/or our intestinal flora isn’t balanced then we are not absorbing nutrients properly and all of our body parts, especially our organs, are not being adequately supported.

Do you see how it all ties together?

New Habits

In order to support the movement of waste exiting through the colon, rebuild our internal flora and thereby heal our digestive system, we must develop some new diet and lifestyle habits. Then the rest of our body has a chance to play catch up by healing and restoring itself back to a natural state of vibrancy.

By identifying your weaknesses in these upcoming aspects and focusing on improving them, your digestion will start to strengthen and your overall health will improve along with it.

10 Aspects Of Improving Digestion

1)   Whole Foods

Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible before being consumed. Whole foods typically do not contain added ingredients, such as sugar, salt, or fat. Nature produced these foods perfect the way they are. We should not need to alter our food before we eat it. Eating a diverse amount of properly proportioned whole foods will give you what you need to heal and to thrive.

2)   Hydration

Our colon needs adequate hydration in order to move the feces out the back-end. If you are not drinking enough water consistently on a daily basis then we suggest going back and reading previous articles about this topic because we stress this issue all the time. It is so fundamental on all levels to be drinking 3-6 liters of water a day depending on your situation.

3)   Movement/Exercise

Activity creates movement in the bowels and promotes the excretion of waste. In addition, large compound muscular exercises such as weight lifting or calisthenics can boost your digestive capacity for up to 24 hours. Get that body moving every single day. Sweating is important.

4)   Enough Rest/Sleep

Try not to eat a minimum of 2 hours before bed and definitely not past 9pm. This will reduce the amount of energy your body has to spend on digestion through the night. That energy can then be used to heal and work elsewhere in the body. When we do not let our bodies rest enough then we do not have sufficient energy to do elsewhere in the body, often leaving digestion as an after thought.

5)   Water Containing Foods

Ultimately raw water-containing fruits and vegetables are the easiest foods for our digestive system to digest, the highest in nutritional content and the most hydrating for our body. Although, if your intestinal flora and digestive enzymes are out of whack then you may need to eat more cooked veggies because you don’t have enough fire-power to digest raw, fibrous foods. The cooked veggies aren’t as high in life force or nutrition but will have to do for now. This is a fine balance and you are going to have to feel it out depending on the current condition of your body. Your stools are a good indicator of what foods you can or can’t digest.

6)   Sequential Eating and Food Combining

Our digestive system uses different types of enzymes to digest different types of foods. Some enzymes create a more alkaline environment and some create a more acidic environment. When we mis-combine certain food groups it creates a neutral state in our digestive system and foods do not properly digest. Simplified food combining: Do not combine starches and proteins, eat fruits on an empty stomach and alone (except greens), greens can go with anything.

7)   Simple Meals (Low # of Ingredients)

The less complex we eat, the less work our digestive system has to do sorting everything out. Eat as simple as you can. Again this is a transition process. Do your best and slowly transition away from heavy, complex, cooked meals.

8)   Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes

These are two supplements that we recommend to pretty much every client that walks through our doors. Our digestive systems have been so beat up over the years it usually takes supplementation to support healing. Probiotics and digestive enzymes are a must if you have any sort of digestive issues.

9)   Emotional Aspects of Digestion (Mental State)

Stress is the silent digestion destroyer. Before sitting down or standing to eat your meal it is a great idea to let our mind settle and slow everything down. Meditate, deep breathing or whatever you do to get as present as possible with your food is key. If we are in fight or flight mode then we will not digest our food properly. If we allow our body to enter rest and digest mode then we are ready to chow down.

10) Enemas and Colon-Hydrotherapy

Enemas have got a bad rap in the conventional health industry. Many people say it is too un-natural and others say it is damaging to the body. We have to look at the big picture here. Was eating processed food and junk our whole lives natural? No. So, sometimes we have to use un-natural processes to regain balance in the body. Also, what is more damaging in the long-term, a backed up toxic body or a light flow of water up your colon to get the waste moving on out. In our experience enemas do have their time and place and be very beneficial for re-gaining balance in the body as long as we don’t become dependent on them and are doing the other necessary aspects to improve our digestion.

Implement these aspects one by one and listen to your body. As always, we recommend seeking out support/ resources as the most efficient and most sustainable way to get results.

In our opinion the digestive system is the most important system in the body and should be a primary focus until balance is re-gained. Without an optimally functioning digestive system, total body healing can’t take place.

Judge Rejects Monsanto’s Bid To Overturn Landmark Cancer Verdict, But Slashes Award

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

School groundskeeper Dewyane Johnson was awarded $289 after a jury found Bayer (Monsanto) to be guilty of causing/contributing to his terminal cancer. Monsanto requested a new trial, and a lower amount has been requested by the corporation.

  • Reflect On:

How are these companies allowed to put these products on the market still? At the end of the day, it's me, you and your neighbour who are buying them. We are the solution to stop this crisis. It's time to wake up.

Glyphosate is the new DDT. DDT was a similar sprayed chemical as an agricultural and household pesticide. Decades later it’s been ban, despite that it was used for years, it had tremendous environmental and health consequences. The sad thing is that the manufacturers of these products are well aware of it, and through their control over government policy, these products are approved and only banned after many years of litigation, red-tape, and the overall collective awareness of what’s actually going on.

Once we become aware of it, despite the fact that the manufacturers’ were already aware, it can no longer be used. Awareness kicks off the process of these substances being phased out of existence, despite the fact that it may take decades, without awareness there are no initiatives.

We are seeing the same thing with Glyphosate right now, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Now, it’s important to mention that the pharmaceutical industry completely dominates medical literature, that’s where all the modern day medical literature that’s deemed ‘significant’ has its roots in. Do you think it would be easy to have a product manufactured by the pharmaceutical company to be deemed hazardous in the medical literature when that same pharmaceutical company controls medical literature?

“The medical profession is being bought by the pharmaceutical industry, not only in terms of the practice of medicine, but also in terms of teaching and research. The academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it’s disgraceful.”  Arnold Seymour Relman (1923-2014), Harvard Professor of Medicine and Former Editor-in-Chief of the New England Medical Journal (source)(source)

Judge Affirms Initial Verdict

This is why when a U.S. judge on Monday affirmed a verdict against Bayer AG (owner of Monsanto) that found glyphosate-based weed-killers are responsible for a man’s terminal cancer illness, it was great news. It’s also vital to mention that there are thousands upon thousands of cancer cases against this product.

Originally, the case of school groundskeeper Dewyane Johnson was the first lawsuit alleging glyphosate causes cancer to go to trial. Any Jury on the planet would probably come to the same conclusion. It’s nearly impossible not to after going through all of the corporate corruption, scientific fraud, and science showing glyphosate is indeed wreaking havoc on human health.

Dwayne Johnson was awarded $289 million for damages. It’s likely Monsanto put forth the motion to have the case overturned as it’s a dangerous precedent to have set against Monsanto. This will mean many more millions in damages down the road and they will have to take responsibility for their actions. Monsanto also asked the judge to through-out her original verdict with regards to the punitive damages portion.

Now what’s happening? Judge Suzanne Bolanos said she would cut the damages to $39 million. Bayer said that the decision to reduce the damages was a step in the right decision, as they continue to claim that decades of science shows that it’s safe for us. This science strongly contradicts an overwhelming amount of science and fraud that says otherwise…

“It is commonly believed that Roundup is among the safest pesticides… Despite its reputation, Roundup was by far the most toxic among the herbicides and insecticides tested. This inconsistency between scientific fact and industrial claim may be attributed to huge economic interests, which have been found to falsify health risk assessments and delay health policy decisions.” – R. Mesnage et al., Biomed Research International, Volume 2014 (2014) article ID 179691

Lawyers for Johnson in a statement on Monday said they were still reviewing whether to accept the reduced award or retry the punitive damages portion.

If Johnson accepts the reduced damages, the final verdict would order Monsanto to pay a total of $78 million, split equally between compensatory and punitive damages.

Keep in mind that the use of glyphosate rose 1500% from 1995 to 2005, and that 100 million pounds of glyphosate is used every year on more than a billion acres. (Cherry, B., “GM crops increase herbicide use in the United States,” Science in Society 45, 44-46, 2010) (source)

Johnson and his team are currently deciding whether or not to accept this proposal from the company.

The Takeaway

Science has illustrated that Glyphosate is clearly not good for humans or the environment. What will it take for its use to be completely banned? There are thousands of lawsuits, thousands of scientists and researchers and papers all pointing to the same thing, yet the industry continues to ignore it and claims otherwise.

On top of this, we have numerous examples of corporate corruption. Corporations like Bayer have amassed so much power in finance and politics that they can literally pay and lie their way through the system. How regulatory agencies approve these products is a complete mystery but becomes less of a mystery when you realize these government regulatory agencies are completely controlled by the company. For something that’s becoming as clear as this, the solution is easy, don’t use these products, and refuse to use these products. That’s the only solution here.

8 Natural Alternatives For Commonly Used Antibiotics

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

While antibiotics are prescribed to be helpful, their bug-killing ability unfortunately is unable to distinguish between good and bad microbiomes. Thankfully, all medications are derived from plants, therefore there are many natural alternatives.

  • Reflect On:

How many antibiotics do you regularly rely upon? Have you tried any of the outlined alternatives to see if they can provide you the same relief without the long-term side effects?

Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent and treat bacterial infections and can be life-saving. However, most people have no idea how much we are consuming and how they can negatively affect our health.

So many of us are prescribed antibiotics at the first sign of an illness, and we are eating pesticides, and antibiotics in our conventionally raised food. Also, according to many sources including Scientific American, pharmaceuticals including antibiotics are often found in our water supply.

So, What’s The Harm?

Antibiotics are designed to kill “bad bugs” however cannot distinguish between good and bad microbiomes in the body and seeks to destroy all. Leaving the immune system compromised. We see an enormous upswing in autoimmune diseases, and it seems to coincide with the massive overuse of antibiotics. If we wipe out the good gut bacteria that is involved with the strengthening the immune system, there is nothing to stop the autoimmune response which leads to inflammation and disease.

Also, according to the World Health Organization, the overuse of antibiotics is causing antibiotic resistance which is an increasingly severe threat because bacterial infections such as MRSA are becoming harder and harder to treat, which could lead to death. In 2015, antibiotic-resistant pathogens were estimated to cause over 50,000 deaths a year in Europe and the USA. The same medical journal concluded that the frequent use of antibiotics is disrupting and harming our bodies ability to distinguish pathogens from normal cells and bacteria.

Use Natural/ Plant-Based Antibiotics Instead

Most people have no idea that all medications are derived from plants and brought to a factory and created with chemicals, hence side effects. Many plants have antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It’s time to return to tradition.

1. Honey

Honey has been used for centuries and possesses antimicrobial properties. It has been known to heal burns, and wounds and it also provides a protective shield to prevent infection. Manuka honey has a significant antibacterial effect.

2. Oregano

Oregano fights many strains of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, sometimes better than its prescription counterparts. Oregano is commonly used to fight Streptococcus when combined with olive leaf extract. According to the Microbiology Journal, Oregano even fights intestinal bacterial infections including E.Coli and is an effective treatment for candida overgrowth. It is believed to destroy the cell membrane of dangerous pathogens to stop them from replicating.

3. Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake Mushrooms naturally boost the immune system and contain antimicrobial properties. These mushrooms packed with many essential amino acids are a nutrient powerhouse which also improves brain function.

4. Thyme

Thyme heals most wounds, especially in the gut. This fantastic herb treats dysbiosis and helps the body rebalance bacteria in your body. The compound found in thyme oil is called thymol which is an antimicrobial, antifungal and antiparasitic remedy.

5. Garlic

Garlic is one of the best natural antibiotics. The unique Sulphur compound in garlic helps resolve illnesses of all kinds including pneumonia, prevents food poisoning, and it improves intestinal health. Unlike traditional medications, garlic like many herbs is intelligent. Garlic is highly effective in killing off a host of gut pathogens including candida, while at the same time feeding and encouraging the growth of the beneficial microbes.

6. Goldenseal

Goldenseal has a long history of use by Native American Indians to treat a variety of infections. It is commonly used for sore throats, colds, flu, bronchitis, and streptococcus. Containing a compound called Berberine, Goldenseal is greatly useful.

7. Clove

Clove has an antioxidant and antimicrobial activity which is higher than many other fruits, vegetables, and other herbs. Clove is such a powerful natural medicine, it is believed to treat even the most stubborn staph infection.

8. Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is an old-time remedy that destroys disease-causing pathogens in minutes when exposed to small amounts, according to over 650 documents released by Larry C. Ford, MD.

FLU REMEDY – Wipe it out Quickly: Sovereign Silver, organic elderberry syrup, vitamin C, vitamin D, and l-lysine.

Please note: when fighting a more severe infection, a longer course of treatment may be required.

Bonus Natural Alternative: Echinacea

Echinacea has been used for centuries and is making a comeback in recent years. This North American flower It is highly effective in fighting infections, especially the common cold, and the flu. When coupled with Goldenseal, it’s a dynamic duo.

The Takeaway

Avoid eating non-organic, and grain fed meats and find a local organic farmer to help ensure the integrity of the food you are eating. Filter your water with a high-quality filtration system, such as Berkey. Explore natural alternatives to antibiotics with your Functional Medicine M.D. or Naturopathic Physician. They can help you explore your options and discuss the possible risks and benefits of each regimen.

Don’t take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. And, if you do take antibiotic medication, make sure to take probiotics such as ABX Support by Klaire Labs (four hours away from antibiotics). And, make sure to finish the prescription to help avoid antibiotic resistance.

Antidepressants Cause Severe Withdrawal Symptoms Like Hallucination, Mania, & Anxiety, Study Reveals

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Another study has emerged outlining the harmful health consequences of taking antidepressant drugs. Not only do pharmaceutical companies lie about their benefits, but they also conceal their harm.

  • Reflect On:

There are other ways to deal with depression that are more effective than medication. Placebo, for example, exercise, a plant-based diet, meditation etc.

This article was written by Sayer Ji, founder of Greenmedinfo.com. Posted here with permission. You can sign up for their newsletter here.

A concerning new study published in the journal Addictive Behavior and titled, “A systematic review into the incidence, severity and duration of antidepressant withdrawal effects: Are guidelines evidence-based?,” reveals that antidepressants are far more addictive and harmful than previously assumed, and vindicates the long time activism on this issue spearheaded by American psychiatrists like Kelly Brogan, MD and Peter Breggin, MD.

Highlights from the paper are as follows:

  • More than half (56%) of people who attempt to come off antidepressants experience withdrawal effects.
  • Nearly half (46%) of people experiencing withdrawal effects describe them as severe.
  • It is not uncommon for the withdrawal effects to last for several weeks or months.
  • Current UK and USA Guidelines underestimate the severity and duration of antidepressant withdrawal, with significant clinical implications.

This study aimed to assess the veracity of the the U.K.’s current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the American Psychiatric Association’s depression guidelines which state that withdrawal reactions from antidepressants are ‘self-limiting’ (i.e. typically resolving between 1 and 2 weeks).

In order to accomplish this goal the systematic review used the following methods:

“A systematic literature review was undertaken to ascertain the incidence, severity and duration of antidepressant withdrawal reactions. We identified 23 relevant studies, with diverse methodologies and sample sizes.”

advertisement - learn more

The results were reported as follows:

“Withdrawal incidence rates from 14 studies ranged from 27% to 86% with a weighted average of 56%. Four large studies of severity produced a weighted average of 46% of those experiencing antidepressant withdrawal effects endorsing the most extreme severity rating on offer. Seven of the ten very diverse studies providing data on duration contradict the UK and USA withdrawal Guidelines in that they found that a significant proportion of people who experience withdrawal do so for more than two weeks, and that it is not uncommon for people to experience withdrawal for several months.”

Side effects were wide-ranging, lasting several months or longer (including permanent dysfunction), such as:

“Typical AD withdrawal reactions include increased anxiety, flu-like symptoms, insomnia, nausea, imbalance, sensory disturbances, and hyperarousal. Dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, brain zaps, diarrhoea, headaches, muscle spasms and tremors, agitation, hallucinations, confusion, malaise, sweating and irritability are also reported (Warner, Bobo, Warner, Reid, & Rachal, 2006, Healy, 2012). Although the aforementioned symptoms are the most common physical symptoms, there is also evidence that AD withdrawal can induce mania and hypomania, (Goldstein et al., 1999; Naryan & Haddad, 2011) emotional blunting and an inability to cry, (HolguinLew & Bell, 2013) long-term or even permanent sexual dysfunction (Csoka & Shipko, 2006).”

The study concluded:

“We recommend that U.K. and U.S.A. guidelines on antidepressant withdrawal be urgently updated as they are clearly at variance with the evidence on the incidence, severity and duration of antidepressant withdrawal, and are probably leading to the widespread misdiagnosing of withdrawal, the consequent lengthening of antidepressant use, much unnecessary antidepressant prescribing and higher rates of antidepressant prescriptions overall. We also recommend that prescribers fully inform patients about the possibility of withdrawal effects.”

The researchers also noted that the rising numbers of antidepressant prescriptions used throughout the world may be fueled by the antidepressant drug withdrawal side effects themselves:

“As the lengthening duration of AD use has fuelled rising AD prescriptions over the same time period, we must understand the drivers of such lengthening use. The evidence set out suggests that lengthening use may be partly rooted in the underestimation of the incidence, severity and duration of AD withdrawal reactions, leading to many withdrawal reactions being misdiagnosed, for example, as relapse (with drugs being reinstated as a consequence) or as failure to respond to treatment (with either new drugs being tried and/or dosages increased). This issue is pressing as long-term AD use is associated with increased severe side-effects, increased risk of weight gain, the impairment of patients’ autonomy and resilience (increasing their dependence on medical help), worsening outcomes for some patients, greater relapse rates, increased mortality and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia.”

The concerning implications of this study to millions around the world who are on antidepressants were immediately recognized by the media, as evidenced by mainstream reporting on the topic with the following headlines:

Thanks to a small but courageous group of professionals who have been raising awareness of the profound, unintended adverse effects of psychiatric drugs and the abject absence of objective criteria for determining “mental disease,” not only are there already resources available to the public today to better understand the dangers of psychiatric drugs, but there are also programs and protocols in place to help those who are on them to come off of them safely and with the support of others who have done the same already. For instance, the program put together by Dr. Kelly Brogan — Vital Mind Reset — has produced powerful outcomes. Take a look at the testimony wall here to learn from the first hand experiences of those who underwent the program and came out drug-free, often with their psychiatric symptoms and comorbid conditions reduced or completely put into remission.
