Kale Slaw With Creamy Avocado Dressing Recipe

Coleslaw was a frequent dinner companion when I was growing up, and despite being a really picky eater, it was always a winner in my books. My parents made it simple and light, with an olive oil and lemon vinaigrette, and for a long time that’s how I thought all coleslaw was prepared.

Then one day I discovered that thick, goopy green mess they call coleslaw at fast food joints and chain restaurants. I thought to myself, “What’s the point of a salad if you’re going to drown it in mayonnaise?” Well, that question has never been satisfactorily answered, but fortunately I have come across much more pleasant variations on the coleslaw theme since then. My favourite for the last year or so has been kale slaw – who knew you could slaw (and verb) anything?

They do a great job of it at Fresh on Bloor in Toronto, in a tangy vinaigrette with really tender kale leaves, but I wanted to try something a little different for my own version. I feel like kale can stand up to a heavier, more assertive dressing, but slathering anything in mayo is definitely not my cup of tea. Avocado, however… that I can do. Full of healthy fats and protein, creamy as can be, and oh so tasty… avocado wins every time!

And so does this salad. Seriously, you’re going to love it! When you feel like you need a good dose of raw greens and spinach has been in the rotation one too many times, this salad will come to the rescue. Letting the kale marinate in the dressing eliminates its natural bitterness, and the addition of hemp, pumpkin, and sunflower seeds adds some protein-fueled staying power. And then, just for the heck of it, I tossed some goji berries in there, and what a good call that was! They add some great colour, along with an unexpectedly pleasant chewy texture and sweetness that offset the crunch of the rest of the salad beautifully. Plus, they’re loaded with beta-carotene (think glowing skin, people) and are crazy high in iron.

But the best part about this salad? You can make it once and eat it for the next few days. The longer it sits, the better it tastes! Easiest. Side. Ever.

Kale Slaw with Creamy Avocado Dressing (serves 4-6)

~ gluten free, grain free, vegan, refined sugar free ~

Ingredients

For the salad

  • 1/2 large bunch of green kale (about 3 cups), chopped
  • 2 cups red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, julienne peeled or grated
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely diced
  • 4 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • 1/3 cup goji berries
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 2 tbsp sunflower seeds
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds

For the dressing

  • 1/2 large, ripe avocado
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbsp filtered water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp grainy dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (or honey if not vegan)
  • sea salt and black pepper

Directions

  1. Toss all the ingredients for the dressing into a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. If it seems too thick, add a little bit more water. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients for the salad. Add the dressing and toss well.
  3. Place in the fridge and let marinate for at least an hour before serving. This softens up the kale and cuts the bitterness of the leaves.
  4. Squeeze with a little fresh lemon juice before serving.

Why aren’t Doctors Prescribing Turmeric if it so Therapeutic?

One of the greatest triumphs of biomedical science today is its role in validating ancient healing modalities that long before the advent of science, and even recorded history itself, were passed down “orally” from generation to generation in the vast body of folkloric medical knowledge that still forms the basis for the majority of the world’s primary health care system.  These so-called “natural” or “alternative” modalities, which our species owes its present day survivorship to after eons of dependency on them, are increasingly gaining the attention of men and women in white lab coats intent on unlocking the mysteries of how they work, and in many cases, why they work better than patented, synthetic, chemical-based medicationsNo better example of this today exists than turmeric.

The Immense Body of Research Substantiating Turmeric for the Prevention and Treatment of Disease

Over the course of the past seven years, we have indexed over 2,700 studies investigating the health benefits of turmeric (or its components) in disease prevention and treatment, discovering an astounding 800+ different diseases that it may be of value in ameliorating. The complexity of this substance in modulating over 150 biological pathways in the body, simultaneously, in a way that almost invariably produces positive results is simply astounding, and could be interpreted as exemplifying a type of plant intelligence if not also inter-species compassion between the plant and animal kingdoms.

The research continues to pile up, with a new published study added to Medline every few days; as of the writing of this article, there are over 9,000 published studies on the topic. In fact, our database on turmeric has grown so large that it takes an entire server just to load the data for professional members performing dynamic filtering by study type, date, etc.

Our regular followers know we report extensively on the evidence indicating that turmeric, and particularly the golden-hued polyphenol known as curcumin it contains, is superior to a wide range of pharmaceuticals both in safety and effectiveness. Why Turmeric Has Not Received FDA Approval

Considering the sheer density of data available today to support the health promoting effects of this safe and time-tested culinary ingredient, you would think the government would allow its use to “prevent, treat, or cure disease” — the technical criteria for something to be defined as a legitimate “drug” by the FDA. Indeed, the FDA mission statement includes the following objective:

FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines more effective, safer, and more affordable and by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to maintain and improve their health.

When something so safe, so affordable, so thoroughly time-tested across a multitude of cultures, has so much evidence behind it demonstrating its ability to alleviate suffering, isn’t it highly unethical not to use it, especially in cases where conventional treatments fail?

Sadly, the FDA requires prohibitively expensive clinical trials to be conducted in order to grant the legal right for the populace to be treated by medicinal substances of any kind. In fact, the average FDA-approved drug on the market today required between four to eleven billion dollars in capital to be invested on the front-end. Non-patented substances, no matter how well they work to produce positive health outcomes, are obviously not capable of producing a return on investment as they grant no market exclusivity. Economic considerations (i.e. profit motives), therefore, are the primary reason why natural medicine is still only being practiced outside the medical industrial establishment’s mile high walls.

How did we arrive at this clearly cognitively dissonant place in time?  I addressed some of these issues in a previous article, Why The Law Forbids The Medicinal Use of Natural Substances,” looking at one of the historical roots of the impasse:

It is an interesting footnote in history that shortly after the Declaration of Independence, Congress declared that natural substances, e.g. water or salt, were God’s gift to mankind and that therefore products of nature should be limited in their patent protection. While this was a noble declaration, it has actually been used against those whose rights it would protect. It has forced private interests to synthetically alter natural substances — for instance the burgeoning biotech field of recombinant DNA technology, i.e. genetically modified organisms (GMOs) — for the sole reason that it guarantees them ownership/patent rights.

And so, because natural substances are a God-given gift [insert the word “Nature-given” if you prefer], freely available without adulteration to be used to treat and even cure disease, the medical system — whose present day focus is profiting off of disease instead of alleviating suffering — goes out of its way to avoid their use, even ostracizing and/or punishing those medical professionals who do incorporate their use in their practice. Likewise, capitalized pharmaceutical interests tinker with natural lead compounds to alter them in such a way that they are converted into xenobiotic chemicals, virtually guaranteeing their toxicity, and making their subsequent FDA drug approval as a novel patentable chemical compound the equivalent of the kiss of death.

This situation has created a great rift between those who believe the government should have the authority to tell us what we can and cannot do medically speaking, and those who believe it is our inborn right to choose food or natural substances to prevent or treat disease regardless of what the Sate deems legal.  Obviously, I stand on the side of health freedom.  As long as what you choose to do for yourself does no harm to anyone else, that right to choose should be considered inviolable and sacrosanct. Truth be told, turmeric harms no one but the bottom of line of drug companies. Ultimately it is highly unethical for the medical establishment to pay lip service to evidence-based medicine, and turn a blind eye to the accumulating research that this spice, and the 1,700 other natural substances we have indexed on our database, have no legitimate value as treatments for the wide range of ailments that now plague members of our society.

    How can technologies like this rollout without any appropriate safety testing from our federal health regulatory agencies? How much corruption and lies go into the approval of various products and services that surround all aspects of humanity?

One mystery of our modern day world is how products and services continue to gain approval that are clearly harmful to human health. Many of these products and services are completely exempt from any health and safety testing by our federal health regulatory agencies, or our federal health regulatory agencies become compromised by big corporations that seem to control them and dictate government policy.

Along with these approvals comes mass marketing campaigns that are akin to brainwashing, they make the masses believe these measures are okay, as if they’re for our own good and that the human population is being taken care of. That, unfortunately, could not be further from the truth. People are still waking up to this fact, and in many cases have a hard time believing it. Again, that comes from massive brainwashing campaigns and ridicule campaigns that don’t address the issues being created by activists.

When it comes to 5G, the science is quite clear, this is a disaster waiting to happen and it’s already being implemented. The fact that this technology is even allowed to rollout is quite disturbing, given the fact that countless doctors, scientists, journalists and activists have already been creating awareness and publishing thousands of papers regarding the dangers associated with the bombardment of electromagnetic radiation we are currently experiencing due to wireless technologies and our favourite gadgets like our cell phones.

If you want to see some of this science for yourself, a great place to start is with the Environmental Health Trust, as you can access a lot of the peer-reviewed research there.

Furthermore, we here are Collective Evolution have written a number of articles going in-depth into this issue and linking this research within our articles. For example, the latest one we wrote about was with regards to Martin L. Pall, PhD and Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University, who outlined in a new report the many health risks associated with 5G technology and wireless radiation in general. He called the 5G rollout one of the “stupidest” ideas in human history. You can access that report and read more about it here.

When it comes to the current 2G/3G/4G radiation the population has been exposed to, they’ve been scientifically linked to: lowered fertility, insomnia, fatigue, depression, anxiety, major changes in brain structure in animals, cellular DNA damage, oxidative stress, hormonal disruption, cancer, and much more.  5G is a completely new and more powerful concern.

Health professionals are gathering together to create awareness about this, which is very encouraging. For example, Dr. Sharon Goldberg, an internal medicine physician and professor, recently gave her testimony regarding the dangers of electromagnetic radiation. She said: “Wireless radiation has biological effects. Period.” You can watch that testimony here.

Brussels also halted the rollout of this technology due to health concerns.

Our Campaign To Stop 5G

It’s very easy to feel helpless about a situation like this, but fear is not the answer, and you don’t have to be scared.  There are a number of things you can do to reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation. You could unplug all of your devices in your home that emit it, like your TV. You could shut down your computer at night and turn off your phone/reduce the amount time you use it. You could buy EMF protective paint or clothing, you can go out and spend more time in nature, you can “Earth” yourself, or “ground” yourself as this is one of the best ways to restore your body to its natural state, biologically, after being altered by EMF radiation. And don’t forget about utilizing the mind-body connection. If you are aware of it, then you can use your consciousness to mitigate its effects.

When my partner and I agreed to move into a newly remodelled loft condo in the historic Hudson’s Bay building in downtown Victoria, we were thrilled by a few interior features: double bathroom sinks, heated tile floors, west-facing (hello sunsets!) and massive floor-to-ceiling windows that were original to the condo’s historic structure.

But while we were busy celebrating our brag-worthy new pad (we might have danced, once or thrice..), there was a nasty secret waiting to reveal itself – those god-forsaken windows.

Being historic, the gigantuous glass panes were nowhere near soundproof, and to make matters worse, we happened to be 4 stories above the busiest road in Victoria, as well as the busiest bus stop *bangs head on desk.* Of course, we found out the hard way, awakening every morning at 7:30am to the abrupt sounds of monster trucks revving, hydraulic squeals, and other obnoxious, penetrating traffic clatter. Even tightly jammed ear plugs proved futile against the noise.

Long story short, quality sleep is few and far between for me these days, so when I came across a Mind Body Green article titled “DIY Foot Reflexology For Your Best Sleep Ever by world-renowned Holistic Reflexologist Laura Norman, I was ecstatic, to say the least.

DIY Foot Reflexology By Laura Norman

“By stimulating reflex points on your feet, hands, face and ears, reflexology subtly impacts the whole body, affecting the organs and glands. A simple reflexology routine that works on just the feet can help you or a loved one to drift off to sleep naturally. There are nearly 15,000 nerves in your feet alone, one of many reasons that foot reflexology is so calming, soothing and effective.

Reflexologists use a map of the feet where all the organs, glands, and corresponding parts of the body are laid out. The toes reflect the head. The ridge beneath the toes on the top part of the ball of the foot is a natural shoulder or neck line. The ball of the foot reflects the chest. The arch mirrors the digestive organs, and the heel and ankles contain reflexes for the reproductive system. The inside curve of each foot (where we find the spinal reflex) corresponds to the actual curves of the spine.

Using the chart above, here’s a 15-minute routine in four easy steps that you can incorporate into your bedtime ritual:

1. Relax the feet, one at a time, with simple relaxation techniques: pressing and squeezing, lightly slapping, or gently kneading — whatever feels good. Finish by pressing and holding your thumb on the solar plexus point of each foot for 5-10 seconds each.

2. On the bottom of each foot, “walk” your thumb up from the base of the heel to each toe (imagine your thumb is a caterpillar inching its way up your foot), then press these reflex points with the outer edge of your thumb or tip of your forefinger:

  • Head/brain (top of each toe) promotes clarity and positive thinking.
  • Pituitary or master gland (center of big toe) stimulates/balances hormone secretions of all other glands.
  • Pineal gland (outer side of big toe) secretes melatonin which controls our circadian rhythm/sleep cycle.
  • Thyroid (base of big toe) balances metabolism.
  • Neck/shoulders (ridge of toes) releases tension.
  • Chest/lungs (ball of foot) calms breathing.
  • Solar plexus/diaphragm (under ball of foot in the center) encourages profound relaxation and peacefulness.

If you have other particular areas of your body that are stressed, you can press the corresponding reflex area or point.

3. Apply the relaxation techniques again, and finish with another thumb press on the solar plexus point on both feet.

4. End with “breeze strokes” — lightly running your fingertips down the tops, bottoms, and sides of each foot in a feathery motion, barely touching the skin. Repeat this several times. It is very soothing to the nerves.

Reflexology transports you into a state of deep relaxation where you are open to suggestions you give yourself. This is a good time for a pre-sleep affirmation such as, A kind and forgiving world sings me to a peaceful sleep.

Also count your blessings and appreciate all of the good times in your day. Envision how you would like your next day to be.

Your bedtime ritual can include a nurturing exchange of reflexology mini-sessions with your partner. You can even use these same techniques to help your child go to sleep more easily. Sweet dreams!
