8 Reasons to Become a Yardfarmer

Published

on

Yardfarmers is a new reality TV/documentary series hybrid for release in Spring 2017. It will follow a diverse set of six young Americans as they move back home with their parents to become yardfarmers. The production crew at Yardfarmers is currently searching for the right people to participate in the show. The concept is simple: follow six young Americans as they live with their parents and attempt to make a livelihood out of growing food in their parents’ and neighbours’ yards, random street flower boxes, churchyards, school yards, vacant lots, cemeteries, or whatever spaces they can find that can be converted from useless ornamental lawn into a new source of healthy, local, and sustainable food. Apart from raising awareness about some of the important issues and challenges we face, Yardfarmers is about converting unsustainable suburban developments, urban food deserts, or other neglected land into sustainable, more resilient opportunities for people while building community. While not everyone can be in a reality TV show like Yardfarmers, everyone can become a yardfarmer. With interest in the “grow your own” food movement which is gaining ever more traction, the show is destined to be a hit. Below are eight reasons to become a yardfarmer and join the yardfarming revolution…

1. Lawns are So 1600’s

Much of suburbia takes great pride in growing and cultivating the perfect lawn. It is interesting to note that lawns originated from Europe around the 1600’s. The cool, mild climate of Europe was conducive to growing grasses and various ground covers. The earliest lawns and grasses had practical applications and were used in and around medieval castles in Britain and France. The low ground cover provided guards and watchmen an unobstructed view of any approaching danger. The practical application of being able to ward off hostile enemies does not translate into current western culture.

2. Lawns Account for Significant Water Usage

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that landscaping and the maintenance of lawn account for approximately 30% of all water use in the United States. Considering that lawns serve no practical purpose and are purely aesthetic in nature, it seems extravagant that such a precious resource is wasted on a hangover from the 16th century. It is therefore the perfect time to reduce our lawns and start investing and/or propagating native plants, fruit and nut trees, vegetables, and other edible plants.

3. Yard Farming Could Help Improve Overall Health

Yardfarming could help solve many of the health challenges of the West. With epidemic levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes plaguing many developed countries, backyard farming and yardfarming could significantly help to get people outside growing healthier, more nutrient dense foods. Studies have shown that people who grow their own food tend to eat healthier and share produce with others members of their family and community. Hence, the knock on effect of growing food locally helps reduce reliance on industrially produced and chemically enhanced (pesticides/GMOs) foods.

4. Food Security

A packet of seeds can cost as little as a few dollars, yet this packet of seeds can grow hundreds of plants. With the price of fruit and vegetables increasing and inflation eating away one’s spending power it makes sense to grow as much of your own food as possible. As Ron Finley says, “growing your own food is like printing your own money.” He is right, the more fresh produce one grows the less dependant one becomes on long supply chain and highly industrial food systems.

5. Lawn a Wasted Resource In Every Aspect

It is estimated that in the U.S alone there are approximately 40 million acres of unsustainable lawns. In 2015 the fifth largest crop in the United States by acreage was the turf-grass lawn. These lawns are using valuable resources such as water, fertilizers, energy, fossil fuels, and no less importantly, our time. Each week across North America millions of gallons of gasoline are used in the weekly lawn mowing ritual. It seems a bit crazy when the U.S and Canada are doing everything possible to extract difficult highly polluting oil resources such as tar sands, deep water, and fracking that we are wasting our time and energy on making sure the lawn looks good for the neighbours.

6. Community Building

Like America, many Western countries have squandered resources around a car dependant culture, which has led to the supermarket dependant culture. It wasn’t that long ago (1940’s/50’s) that supermarkets didn’t really exist. People either grew much of their own produce or sourced meat, dairy, and other food items from their local community farmers. Today most of us will jump in the car and drive to our nearest supermarket. Being involved in growing your own food helps build community. As people grow excess produce they tend to share it with neighbours and friends, hence strengthening local networks and local community resilience.

7. Increasing Local Food Production and Efficiency

Some of the benefits of a decentralized food system include: reduced food miles, development of local food security, the adoption and fostering of improved soil quality, reduced waste packaging and storage, supporting small farms and independent grocery store owners, facilitating employment opportunities, increased flow of capital within local and regional areas, higher quality produce not dependent upon global supply chains, and better environmental outcomes in regards to pollution and use of fossil fuels.

8. Know Where Your Food Comes From

Being involved in the local food movement and yardfarming helps reduce the long distances food travels to reach us. It also makes more visible from whom and where our food is coming. Produce grown locally is often fresher than that which is purchased from the supermarket. Many supermarkets use extensive cold storage and distribution centres to hold and process fruit and vegetables. Often goods can be in transit or cold-stored for days or weeks. Without the luxury of large storage and processing facilities small local farmers and growers generally have to pick and distribute fairly rapidly to customers.

8 Year-Old Mexican Girl Invents A Solar Water Heater & Wins Nuclear Science Prize

Published

on

Photo Credit: Alfredo Alvarez, Imagen Television

In Brief

  • The Facts:

An 8 year old girl named Xóchitl Guadalupe Cruz has invented a solar powered water heater out of recycled materials that will bring warm water to those who don't have easy access.

  • Reflect On:

Don't we have incredible innovation everywhere we turn? Why then does our world not see thrivability everywhere? Is it perhaps held back by systems that don't allow for all to thrive?

Innovation comes from all ages, and this is further seen in the story of Xóchitl Guadalupe Cruz, an eight-year-old girl from Chiapas, Mexico who invented an entirely solar-powered device for heating water. The impact her invention could have on others around the world is immense, and this has inspired the UNAM’s (National Autonomous University of Mexico) Institute of Nuclear Sciences to award her.

To those in developed countries, her invention may not seem all that revolutionary as access to warm or hot water is commonplace, but for those in many other areas of the world, including her town in Mexico, this would be a luxury.

Cruz’s device was inspired by the desire to reduce deforestation and pollution by replacing the need to cut logs for heating water, which is the primary method used in her part of the world. Cruz furthers her commitment to environmentally sound practices by utilizing recycled materials to build her device.

The Cruz family has already installed their daughter’s invention on the roof of their home in Mexico. They now enjoy warm water that can be used for anything from cooking to bathing.

Her solar-powered invention has the potential to improve the quality of life for millions around the world who still rely on wood as the primary source of fuel for heating water.

At CE we have long brought up the idea that our economic system ultimately holds back the ability for humanity to thrive. While many look at capitalism in developed countries as an ideal means to create high-quality products for consumers, the economic models we operate off of are designed at their core to enslave humanity. This can be explored via research into how money comes into our economy to begin with — a debt-based process initiated by central banks that indebts a country which then indebts the banking system which then indebts the business/consumer.

The very design of the system also makes it so that certain countries can easily be held down by others as they cannot easily access modern developments that come from other countries simply because the value of their currency is set by those who control the economy.

Thus, the need for inventions like this serve to temporarily provide help to people who could already be enjoying the luxury of energy technologies suppressed by the economic system and their rulers who choose to put power and control over the thrivability of humanity.

While we are here, let’s also consider the reality of new energy technologies that go well beyond wind, solar and fossil fuels. We did an interview series with Susan Manewich, another incredible voice in the space of emerging energy technologies to not only discuss the purposeful suppression of new energy technologies, but also a less talked about form of ‘suppression’ that is placed on the emergence of these technologies.

Below is a teaser to the Hidden Energy Technology interview we did with her, and you can sign up for a free 7 day trial to CETV to watch it.

The Takeaway

There is never a shortage of innovation, ideas, and problem solving within our society. But there is often a shortage of movement allowed in the rigid systems we have created that stop technology and basic needs from being brought to all.

When you consider the basic truth that millions don’t have access to clean water and food each day, when at the same time, others just a few hours away by flight live in completely developed countries where gluttony is commonplace, you begin to realize that this is being done by design, not by accident.

Do we still wish to put all of our faith and participation in systems that seek to enslave others vs. allow them to thrive? A deep question for such a simple story, but still a necessary one.

Sobering Footage Shows Orangutan Fighting Off Excavator To Protect His Home

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Footage released in 2018 shows an orangutan trying to protect its habitat by attacking a machine deforesting for palm oil creation.

  • Reflect On:

Are we at a point where we are recognizing the disconnected nature of our actions? Do videos like this make us feel something? If so what are we feeling? Are we finally beginning to realize we are not in harmony with nature or ourselves?

By now many of us know about the destructive nature of palm oil harvesting. As each year goes by about 6,000 orangutans are killed as a direct result of deforestation for palm oil. According to The Orangutan Project, every hour 300 football fields of precious remaining forest is ploughed to the ground across South East Asia to make way for palm oil plantations.

The creation of palm oil is popular within the food industry because it is a cheap oil that can be used in many processed products. While the cost on the shelves might be cheap, the cost on wildlife and the environment isn’t, but it appears as though that isn’t the concern in society as we operate in a way where each individual or individual company is looking to capitalize on the market without considering the cost of our collective actions.

Orangutans and other animals are being forced from their homes as a result of this human action and it appears it’s time for us to begin reflecting not only on our choices as consumers, but also on how our systems and infrastructures are designed to support this type of action.

A video clip shot in 2013 but released in 2018 brings all the observation and emotional connection necessary to see just how big of a problem this has become for our wildlife friends. The clip obtained by International Animal Rescue captured footage of an orangutan attempting to defend his home from loggers.

The short clip shows an orangutan walking toward a bulldozer that is destroying its habitat in the Sungai Putri forest in Borneo, Indonesia. After slapping the machine’s bucket, he frantically tries to escape.

The organization wrote on Facebook:

“This desperate orangutan is frantically seeking refuge from the destructive power of the bulldozer; a machine that has already decimated everything else around him.”

You could say there was some good news for the orangutan as it was rescued by the animal welfare group. But his home, much like the homes of many like him, was destroyed.

This is yet another example of how humans are responsible for the mass amounts of suffering taking place in our world. We are witnessing a time when cutting out animal products in our diets and clothing selections is becoming more popular due to the rise in awareness about how our unnecessary actions are causing suffering to others.

This showcases a shift in overall collective awareness that puts humanity back in connection with nature and its surroundings. The truth is, and you could say this is my opinion although for me it’s a deep feeling, when humanity is truly in touch with itself, the unnecessary killing of animals and the environment simply doesn’t make sense to partake in. No beliefs, ethics or morality necessary to feel that truth.

The Takeaway

Have we reached a point where we can say we do not respect our environment or natural life? Is our disconnection with self and our own consciousness beyond ‘the brain’ evident in how we treat other living things?

If you wish to help shift humanity away from practices like this and create a more peaceful society, share this article to raise awareness about the issue. Jordan Peterson Shares Highly Controversial Thoughts About Climate Change

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

The facts surrounding climate change and what we hear politically don't line up. 2 years reading the science at a UN committee has Jordan Peterson in the know when it comes to the truth about climate change.

  • Reflect On:

Why is it that the issue of climate change is so controversial? Is it perhaps because the facts and history don't match with the extreme fear presented through politics?

Over the past few years Jordan Peterson has gained a lot of popularity within the masses, and for good reason. Peterson is like a flag being raised in the air that states “hold on a second, let’s think a little bit about the things you are so charged about in society, and let’s see what’s actually true.”

Why this is important is because many things are coming to the forefront in humanity’s collective consciousness. All the shadows, the tough stuff, the darker stuff — no more hiding from the realities of our actions and things we do as a collective.

As this all comes forward, emotions can run high. When this happens, if we don’t process those emotions, and instead let them linger, we end up with a great deal of cloud within our understanding of reality. However, when we are grounded, and perhaps in our hearts, we can not only see truth more clearly, but also move forward in solving the issues we face.

Our judgement becomes clouded when we pretend our individual stories and anecdotes apply to all people, when we cannot process our emotions, and when we build our identities on the things we believe in. The truth is, today’s modern culture severely attempts to locate an enemy and tries to blame the world’s issues on one set of people. This is as a result of social engineering and only further pulls apart society and stops us from solving any of the challenges we face.

On To Peterson

Jordan Peterson recently gave a presentation at the Cambridge Union at Cambridge University in England–we’ll get to that important video in a second. During the talk, he was asked whether or not climate change was a good issue to unite the world around us so we can begin solving the problems we face together, problems that apply to us all. Peterson answered simply at first, “No.”

In the course of his explanation, he went on to say that trying to solve global warming is “…the kind of low resolution thinking that gets us nowhere.” And he’s right.

The reason why I resonate with this statement is because when you trust politicians, what you get is what you got. And just as Peterson goes on to describe in his talk, politicians are not bringing us the truth about climate change that scientists are finding.

Intuitively, global warming didn’t add up for me 10 years ago. That sparked a journey into reading the papers, doing the research, sifting through the thousands of pages of reports, science and documents of what has been known about climate change for the last 10 years and beyond.

I questioned the “98% of scientists all agree” statement and thought critically about it. Who are these scientists? Who was asked? Why only certain people? Why aren’t they taking into consideration the ones that don’t agree?

The challenge is that people seem to think from one camp or another. Either you agree with climate change or you got all of your information from people pushing fossil fuels. This is bad thinking in my view, and thinking that is driven by a culture that politicizes every issue such that nothing can be done about them but create more wealth for the elite class while the masses fight.

The truth is, and this is the same message I have been presenting about climate change for years now, we don’t need any scientist to tell us that we are harming our environment. Air pollution, waste, animal agriculture, toxic chemicals and so forth, these are all practices we all know, see and feel every day. Yet you’ll notice C02 isn’t in there. Why? Because C02 is not the issue. The issue is that our economic system does not support the mass changing of our destructive ways because it’s designed for everyone to be striving to do everything as cheap as humanly possible to maximize profits or simply stay alive.

The elephant in the room is our economic system, and C02 is simply the distraction from that elephant.

As Peterson states in the remainder of his talk, he worked in a UN committee for 2 years and in that time read many papers about climate change, many of which made him feel better about the situation just as they did for me. Why? Because as Peterson states, the politics and the science do not match. What Alexandria Ocasio Cortez says and what the science states are two different things. When you read the science, you see things aren’t what people are saying.

Further to that, much of what is out there in the form of radical theory is built off of unreliable data. For those watching the science closely each year, you will know that the data is proven faulty as every year goes by. Projections are proven faulty as every year goes by. Peterson sees and knows this as well.

The Takeaway

Like with most things about our world, it can be sifted through with intuition at first. Much of my journey in understanding the way our world truly works came from meditation, intuition and remaining neutral. When you then bring the science, mind and facts in from that point as a foundation, you will see things a lot more clearly and thus know how to talk about solving the issues at hand.

In this case, if we do not address the enslaving economic system that was put there by those who control humanity, we will not be able to move to a point where we truly thrive. Recognition of this issue allows us to take action.

Action that happens both within our consciousness and out in our world. This is why I developed the CE Protocol, it helps us understand the full picture of how we can change ourselves and our world.
