8 Reasons to Become a Yardfarmer

Published

on

Yardfarmers is a new reality TV/documentary series hybrid for release in Spring 2017. It will follow a diverse set of six young Americans as they move back home with their parents to become yardfarmers. The production crew at Yardfarmers is currently searching for the right people to participate in the show. The concept is simple: follow six young Americans as they live with their parents and attempt to make a livelihood out of growing food in their parents’ and neighbours’ yards, random street flower boxes, churchyards, school yards, vacant lots, cemeteries, or whatever spaces they can find that can be converted from useless ornamental lawn into a new source of healthy, local, and sustainable food. Apart from raising awareness about some of the important issues and challenges we face, Yardfarmers is about converting unsustainable suburban developments, urban food deserts, or other neglected land into sustainable, more resilient opportunities for people while building community. While not everyone can be in a reality TV show like Yardfarmers, everyone can become a yardfarmer. With interest in the “grow your own” food movement which is gaining ever more traction, the show is destined to be a hit. Below are eight reasons to become a yardfarmer and join the yardfarming revolution…

1. Lawns are So 1600’s

Much of suburbia takes great pride in growing and cultivating the perfect lawn. It is interesting to note that lawns originated from Europe around the 1600’s. The cool, mild climate of Europe was conducive to growing grasses and various ground covers. The earliest lawns and grasses had practical applications and were used in and around medieval castles in Britain and France. The low ground cover provided guards and watchmen an unobstructed view of any approaching danger. The practical application of being able to ward off hostile enemies does not translate into current western culture.

2. Lawns Account for Significant Water Usage

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that landscaping and the maintenance of lawn account for approximately 30% of all water use in the United States. Considering that lawns serve no practical purpose and are purely aesthetic in nature, it seems extravagant that such a precious resource is wasted on a hangover from the 16th century. It is therefore the perfect time to reduce our lawns and start investing and/or propagating native plants, fruit and nut trees, vegetables, and other edible plants.

3. Yard Farming Could Help Improve Overall Health

Yardfarming could help solve many of the health challenges of the West. With epidemic levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes plaguing many developed countries, backyard farming and yardfarming could significantly help to get people outside growing healthier, more nutrient dense foods. Studies have shown that people who grow their own food tend to eat healthier and share produce with others members of their family and community. Hence, the knock on effect of growing food locally helps reduce reliance on industrially produced and chemically enhanced (pesticides/GMOs) foods.

4. Food Security

A packet of seeds can cost as little as a few dollars, yet this packet of seeds can grow hundreds of plants. With the price of fruit and vegetables increasing and inflation eating away one’s spending power it makes sense to grow as much of your own food as possible. As Ron Finley says, “growing your own food is like printing your own money.” He is right, the more fresh produce one grows the less dependant one becomes on long supply chain and highly industrial food systems.

5. Lawn a Wasted Resource In Every Aspect

It is estimated that in the U.S alone there are approximately 40 million acres of unsustainable lawns. In 2015 the fifth largest crop in the United States by acreage was the turf-grass lawn. These lawns are using valuable resources such as water, fertilizers, energy, fossil fuels, and no less importantly, our time. Each week across North America millions of gallons of gasoline are used in the weekly lawn mowing ritual. It seems a bit crazy when the U.S and Canada are doing everything possible to extract difficult highly polluting oil resources such as tar sands, deep water, and fracking that we are wasting our time and energy on making sure the lawn looks good for the neighbours.

6. Community Building

Like America, many Western countries have squandered resources around a car dependant culture, which has led to the supermarket dependant culture. It wasn’t that long ago (1940’s/50’s) that supermarkets didn’t really exist. People either grew much of their own produce or sourced meat, dairy, and other food items from their local community farmers. Today most of us will jump in the car and drive to our nearest supermarket. Being involved in growing your own food helps build community. As people grow excess produce they tend to share it with neighbours and friends, hence strengthening local networks and local community resilience.

7. Increasing Local Food Production and Efficiency

Some of the benefits of a decentralized food system include: reduced food miles, development of local food security, the adoption and fostering of improved soil quality, reduced waste packaging and storage, supporting small farms and independent grocery store owners, facilitating employment opportunities, increased flow of capital within local and regional areas, higher quality produce not dependent upon global supply chains, and better environmental outcomes in regards to pollution and use of fossil fuels.

8. Know Where Your Food Comes From

Being involved in the local food movement and yardfarming helps reduce the long distances food travels to reach us. It also makes more visible from whom and where our food is coming. Produce grown locally is often fresher than that which is purchased from the supermarket. Many supermarkets use extensive cold storage and distribution centres to hold and process fruit and vegetables. Often goods can be in transit or cold-stored for days or weeks. Without the luxury of large storage and processing facilities small local farmers and growers generally have to pick and distribute fairly rapidly to customers.

Canada’s Premiers Sour On Carbon Tax: Positive Signs?

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Justin Trudeau's Carbon Tax legislation seemed to be on track just a year ago, when 9 of 10 provinces had signed on to it. But times have changed, as today at least half of the Premiers are speaking against it.

  • Reflect On:

What does it mean if Canada, once on track to implement a Carbon Tax, is now having great difficulties getting it implemented? Does this mean people are starting to wake up to the fact that it is a money-grabbing hoax?

(Note: the video embedded down below by Annie Leonard is a clear and simple explanation of the Carbon Tax / Cap and Trade system. It might be of benefit to view this video first if you are unclear about these concepts.)

For a while, it seemed like the powers that be had won another high-stakes battle, pushing their cap-and-trade scheme through Canada by way of Justin Trudeau’s federal government. It was only a year ago that nine of ten provinces had agreed to Trudeau’s plan to usurp provincial jurisdiction and mandate a national carbon tax.

Now Saskatchewan, the lone objector at that time, has filed a reference case to its provincial court of appeal, arguing that the matter falls under provincial jurisdiction. And they are no longer the lone voice of dissent.

Ontario Bails

The newly elected Ontario government announced recently it would end the province’s cap-and-trade program, fulfilling one of Premier Doug Ford’s election promises.

“Cap-and-trade and carbon tax schemes are no more than government cash grabs that do nothing for the environment, while hitting people in the wallet in order to fund big government programs.”–Doug Ford

Citing the auditor general, the Ford government said the program could cost Ontario consumers and businesses C$8 billion, with a minimal impact on the province’s carbon emissions.

Other Provinces Join In

As this Financial Post article notes:

This week, going into the meeting of the premiers, the number of provinces supporting the Trudeau carbon tax looks like it’s down to five — or maybe even four. Soon it could be down to three.

Along with Saskatchewan and Doug Ford’s Ontario, Prince Edward Island has now said it will not accept Trudeau’s mandatory carbon tax. That’s right: a Liberal provincial government, under P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan, is now siding with conservative premiers in Ontario and Saskatchewan in fighting Trudeau’s federally imposed carbon tax. And in Newfoundland and Labrador another Liberal provincial government, led by Premier Dwight Ball, has yet to legislate a carbon tax. They wanted to wait, he said, to see what Ontario would do, first. They have their answer now.

There’s also Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister. You might remember he was in a rush to announce his own <less expensive> “made-in-Manitoba” carbon-tax plan a few months ago. More recently, Pallister’s government has said it is willing to take the Trudeau government to court so it can follow its made-in-Manitoba tax plan, not one made in Ottawa. Even New Brunswick’s Liberal Premier Brian Gallant, who is hosting the St. Andrews meeting this week, seems to be backpedaling on his support of a Trudeau carbon tax.

Power Shift

While most of the reasoning behind the political about-face of Canada’s Premiers is based on jurisdiction issues with the federal government, there may be more at play here. Behind the scenes, there may be a shift in power towards those who are not set to benefit from the cap-and-trade scheme. In the video below, Annie Leonard speaks about who is really promoting cap-and-trade and what kind of benefits they hope to get from it. She also indicates, as Doug Ford alluded to and Donald Trump has certainly said, the whole scheme does little to nothing for the environment or for humanity’s future.

I personally believe the whole CO2/Global Warming narrative to be a hoax. But that’s a story for another article. Even if the ‘science’ is true, Leonard makes it clear that with this cap-and-trade system, world leaders are merely promoting a complicated system designed to increases the wealth and control of the powers that be. Seeing a growing number of Premiers in Canada starting to line up against the cap-and-trade system is a sign to me that things may be going in a better direction.

The Solution To Global Food Shortages, Contamination & Inflated Prices?

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

Modern agriculture is not sustainable for our planet and is damaging our soil, depleting it of all its nutrients. We are needing more and more pesticides and chemical fertilizers to grow our crops. Aquponics is one much more sustainable option.

  • Reflect On:

If we have the means to grow an abundance of food for everyone that wouldn't cause damage to the soil, or feed us unnecessary poisons, why wouldn't we?

There is no doubt about it, a growing problem today with food shortages and inflated food prices across the globe exists. For a long time, the answer to these issues has been the implementation of genetically engineered crops, according to many mainstream scientists at least. Unfortunately, this method of farming is contaminating our soil and depleting it of its nutrients, which are essential for growing vitamin-rich foods. The vast amount of chemical pesticides that are sprayed on genetically modified crops make it next to impossible to grow anything else and especially without the use of these pesticides. Considering there are much more natural, and efficient ways of growing ample amounts of the food we need to survive, one might wonder why we haven’t begun to implement these technologies on a mass scale.

Vortex Aquaponics

One of these solutions is a method of growing produce, known as aquaponics. One company, in particular, Vortex Aquaponics has made it their goal to grow an abundance of organic food and even produce clean fish, all without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Their objectives are:

  • Efficiently grow plants with a systematic process that is conducive to the local area
  • Produce non-contaminated mineral dense fruits, vegetables, and fish, with full lab tests
  • Create a streamlined process to sell and distribute small to large aquaponics systems
  • Offer complete aquaponics education programs to offer to the public and new customers

Is It Time For A Complete Overhaul On Our Current Food Production System?

Perhaps surprisingly a recent Consumer Reports survey showed that 84% of American consumers purchase organic food. This is great news, and it could signify the beginning of the end of genetically modified foods if organic food producers are able to keep up with the demand. Supply shortages are one of the greatest threats facing the industry today. Sales of organic food make up four percent of the total food sales while the amount of acreage devoted to organic agriculture is less than one percent of total U.S. land used for agriculture.

What Is Aquaponics?

According to Vortex Aquaponics,

“Aquaponics” the combination of Aquaculture (culture of fish) and Hydroponics (culture of plants without soil) integrated into a single agricultural system that works in many climates yielding an abundant amount of organic vegetation and edible fish.

advertisement - learn more

Why choose Vortex Aquaponics?

  • Up to 10 times more production in the same amount of space horizontally without the plants being overcrowded.
  • Requires approximately 1/4 the labor of almost all other food production methods.
  • Virtual elimination of weeds, pests, diseases, viruses and pathogens for both aquatic and plant life alike
  • 100% free of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other toxic chemicals
  • No watering plants! The aquaponics system uses 98% less water than normal.   Because the water is constantly re-circulating, and you do not lose any to soil absorption. The roots of your plants are constantly submerged in nutrient-rich water and you never have to worry about watering your plants again.
  • Multiple Sources of Income: Selling the plants, finished products, raising fish, selling seeds, etc..
  • Plants grow twice as fast.  The plants are getting nutrients 24/7 and don’t have the stress of traditional soil grown plants.
  • Uses up to 70% less Energy than traditional growing methods.
  • Many useful by-products are created that can be used to produce other crops, fruit trees, soils, biofuels and renewable energy

How Does This Actually Work?

All of the materials that are used by aquaponics systems align with their eco-friendly vision and include

1.  Vertical growing columns (Aquapot Vertical Towers): These are used for green leafy veggies and herbs
2.  Media Beds: For vines and larger crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, fruiting plants, and root vegetables
3.  Fish Tanks: For raising the fish of your choice
4.  Solids Collector: For keeping the system clean
5.  De-Gasser: For putting oxygen back into the system
6.  Water Pump: For pumping the water up to the top of the column and recirculating the water
7.  Air Pump: Provides oxygen for the plants and the fish
8. Dome Greenhouse or hoop house

Vortex aquapnics also has an education system where they teach school children how the system works and why it is important for our future.

Is This Sounding Too Good To Be True?

These systems are already underway and being used to grow food. There are already 3 successful systems set up in Puerto Rico, China and Canada. The goal is to make these systems, widespread across the globe and supplement the demands for organic produce, while most likely over time wiping out other forms of agriculture that are not sustainable for our planet.

This goes that we do have the technology that is needed to ensure that no one goes hungry and we don’t have to be using the outdated and often destructive methods of industrial agriculture anymore. Times are changing and this system has the potential to transform the agricultural industry in a big way.

Much Love

Is This End of Milk? Why 52 Dairy Farms In New York Just Lost Their Wholesale Contracts

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

As awareness continues to grow, more and more dairy farms are going out of business while plant-based alternatives are on the rise.

  • Reflect On:

With so many alternatives available, do we really need to keep supporting this industry that has always put profit before people? Milk does not do a body, the environment or the animals any good at all.

As more and more people awaken to the benefits of a plant-based diet, due to ethical, health and environmental concerns, we are seeing a massive decline in the sales of dairy. 52 New York dairy farms have lost their wholesale contracts as no one is lined up to buy their product as of the beginning of July.

According to CBS New York, the average American drinks 37 percent less cow milk than they did in 1970. So, why the decline? Awareness has been growing for a number of years about the conditions in which dairy cows are raised, the hormones and antibiotics they are given, and the food they are being fed. People are realizing that maybe milk, in turn, does not do a body good. Not to mention the profound impact on the environment to raise these animals in the first place. Many believe that it is actually unnatural for humans to consume milk past the weaning stage from their mother’s breast milk — like all other members of the animal kingdom.

Plant-based alternatives have been taking over and we are seeing a wide variety popping up all over supermarket shelves. Everything from cashew, coconut, peas, rice, oats, almonds, flax seeds, hazelnuts, hemp macadamia, and soy, it appears as though ditching the dairy has never been easier. The demand for milk alternatives is so high that the global dairy-free milk market is expected to reach 14.4 billion by 2020.

Elmhurst Dairy

Just last year we saw just how much plant-based milk alternatives have been taking over when Elmhurst Dairy, one of the largest dairy manufacturers on the East Coast of the United States switched their entire operation over to nut-based milk alternatives.

CEO of the company, Henry Swartz, said that the company had been operating at high costs and noted that “Pasteurized fluid milk has sort of gone out of style. We are unable to continue to go on without ongoing losses. There isn’t much room for our kind of business. I tried to keep this open because it was my father’s plant and he asked me to do so.”

Elmhurst’s new nut milk products are part of a new brand called Milked and according to Swartz, their milk has “up to 4 times more nuts per serving than the other leading brands” and will be available in four varieties, almond, hazelnut, cashew, and walnut. Each contains only raw cold-milled nuts and simple ingredients. And “No emulsifiers, thickeners, whiteners or frankenfood proteins” are used.

The End Of Dairy As We Know It?

As more awareness is raised, the conscious consumer recognizes the importance of ditching the milk. Interestingly enough, many people never liked milk in the first place but were encouraged to drink it because of the media constantly pushing it as a health food, making us believe that it is one of the main components of healthy bone development.

A large study coming from researchers at the Uppsala University in Sweden found that drinking milk led to an increased mortality rate and actually made bones more prone to fracturing, not less.

The study was recently published in the peer-reviewed British Medical Journal and was specifically conducted to examine whether high milk consumption is associated with mortality and fractures in both men and women.

The above studies are just a few out of many examples that tell us that milk isn’t all it has been cracked up to be. With dairy being one of the main food groups in the Canadian and American food guides, it is easy to see how the dairy associations of these countries have duped us. Unfortunately, as with most Big Businesses it is and always has been, profit before people, and they will and have done whatever it takes to make us believe that we need milk to keep us healthy. I’m sure we all remember the “got milk” ads, featuring celebrities and athletes with milk moustaches? Propaganda at it’s finest.

Could It Be The End Of Big Meat As Well?

Big dairy isn’t the only one facing the heat. Along with the rising awareness of the truth about milk, many people are looking at meat with a skeptical eye as well. Perhaps this is why, in the U.S. alone, veganism has risen by 600% since 2014.

Being vegan, or if you prefer to not have the label but following a plant-based diet – is no longer taboo or a laughing matter.

The results are in and more and more people across the globe are choosing an animal-free diet. Why this has happened can be attributed to a number of different reasons. –

An increased awareness towards the atrocities that are taking place on factory farms.

  • Compassion towards animals.
  • A drive for increased personal health and wellness.
  • A growing concern towards the environmental destruction caused by meat eating.
  • A shift in consciousness within ourselves that leads to a greater connection to the body, earth, and animals.

One thing is for sure, as we shift and our awareness continues to grow, people are taking responsibility and making big changes in their lives.

According to the video below,

“Veganism in the U.S. has increased by 600% in the past three years alone. Six percent of Americans identified as vegans in 2017, compared to only one percent in 2014. Non-dairy milk sales have also increased by 61% since 2012, which is causing traditional cow milk sales to decrease. According to data released by GrubHub, people chose vegan food 195% more in the first half of 2017 than the year before.

The trend is spreading globally too, people identifying as ‘vegans’ increased 350% in the UK, compared to a decade ago. Vegetarianism rose by 400% in the last 10 years in Portugal. In HongKong, 22% of people are practicing a plant-based diet. In China, even the government is getting on the plant-based train, by encouraging people to cut their meat consumption in half. Researchers think China’s plant-based market will grow more than 17% by 2020. Based on these numbers, it’s clear that more and more people are shifting toward plant-based diets.”

Power To The People

This is simply one example of how much power we — as the consumers, really have. If it weren’t for us learning the truth about the dairy industry, and how harmful the production of milk is for our planet, how the animals on these factory farms are treated and the potential health implications from milk consumption we would not be seeing such a drastic decline in the sales of milk. This goes for everything in our lives, if you don’t want to see something happening, simply stop supporting it. Putting your money where your mouth is, and voting with your dollar is a powerful way to create real change on this planet. It’s time to walk our talk, speak and spread our truth, and be the change we wish to see in the world.

Make Your Own Nutmilk

Homemade nut milks are not only super easy but much more affordable and less wasteful than most store-bought brands. They have more nuts per serving, which means more essential vitamins and minerals. Homemade nut milks are also better because they aren’t loaded with thickening agents and preservatives. Check out the video below to learn how to make a very simple Vanilla Almond Nutmilk
