Archaeologists Announce The Discovery Of A 3,700 Year-Old Pyramid In Egypt

Published

on

A land steeped in ancient history and thought to be the birthplace of Western civilization, Egypt — and its monuments in particular — continues to mystify and intrigue historians and archaeologists. The majority of these monuments reside on the west side of the Nile, known as the Land of the Dead. And on the east side of the Nile, monuments were reserved for the use of the living.

A prosperous and highly religious people, Egyptians took advantage of the land they lived on and its great resources. A nation of perfectionists, their attention to detail served them well throughout their industrious endeavours. Because the Egyptians believes their kind a mortal god, who became one with the immortal gods when he died, it became necessary to protect his body, and so the attention to proper burial came to be, hence the giant pile of solid stone.

Along with the pyramids serving as tomb, they also functioned as a temple complex for the deified Pharaoh.

An interesting thing to note is that the bodies one would assume to find in the pyramids weren’t there, or anywhere else, for that matter! So many discoveries remain to be uncovered despite what we already know, and this is perhaps the most exciting part of it all.

Now, Egyptian archaeologists have announced a new discovery that is likely to further intrigue, and potentially stir up more questions.

The team found a pyramid believed to be 3,700 years old, dating back to ancient Egypt’s 13th Dynasty.

Found just north of the remains of the infamous Bent Pyramid belonging to King Sneferu, the newly discovered monument resides 20 miles south of Cairo, according to the head of the Ancient Egyptian Antiquities Sector, Mahmoud Afifi.

The newly discovered pyramid’s remains consist of its inner structures, including a corridor that leads to a lobby that comes from ground level and up to a ramp on one side, and interior walls and columns covered in hieroglyphics.

“The text is written on the cartouche (hieroglyphics stating the name and title of a monarch) is for King Imani Kamau, one of the kings of the 13th family,” the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities wrote in a Facebook post.

Because the outer workings are missing, the team must rely on the remains available to determine the size of the pyramid. They believe that the bent slopes on the side could represent one of the very first attempts at constructing a smooth-sided pyramid, like that of King Sneferu.

A pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty, his pyramids included funerary complexes, like the Dahshur necropolis (or large cemetery of an ancient city), which served as the burial site for courtiers and high-ranking officials. It was his Bent Pyramid, however, that has stood out in modern times the most, as it represents one of the first structures to show the transition of pyramids shapes.

The bent shape came to be after unstable ground conditions caused its original 55-degree angle to buckle. The builders made a case around the base, but with the rest of the sides measuring at 43-degree angles, the bent shape came to be.

The ministry said: “All the discovered parts of the pyramid are in very good condition and further excavation is to take place to reveal more parts.”

Hopefully further digging and exploring of the texts will reveal more about the ancient structure’s secrets.

These ‘End-Of-Life Doulas’ Are Guiding People Peacefully To Their Death

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

We all die. Mainstream medicine doesn't offer much in the way of end-of-life care. Death Doulas help family and friends with what they can do to help their loved ones come to terms with their impending death and how to handle it themselves.

  • Reflect On:

We live in a culture where more often than not simply talking about death is taboo. Death Doulas can help remove these barriers and open up lines of communication with the dying and their families so they can pass on with much less fear and pain.

When we typically hear the term doula, we either think ‘what the heck is that?’, or we may already know that a doula is a trained professional who assists in a more natural process of childbirth, usually in the home.

So essentially, a ‘death doula’ is virtually the opposite: someone who assists a person who has a terminal illness, as well as helping that person’s friends, family members and even animals come to terms with the fast approaching morality that we will all face one day.

In the world of mainstream medicine, doctors themselves don’t offer much to people who are on their deathbed, especially on an emotional level. Family members and friends are often left in the dark as to how they are supposed to cope with the knowledge that their loved one will pass. They are rarely given methods through which they can talk candidly about their loved one’s inevitable death, and therefore this topic is often not discussed, which can make it much more difficult to process for the person who is dying and for everyone who is close to them.

Thanadoula

An end-of-life doula is sometimes referred to as a thanadoula from the greek thana meaning death and doula meaning servant. Generally speaking, it is said that the role of the death doula is to walk alongside the dying person and their family. This encompasses a very wide range of services that include: providing spiritual, psychological and social support, assisting with the creation of positive and empowering end-of-life plans, ideas to optimize physical comfort, and educating families on the new and progressive options for home wakes and natural burials. Often, these doulas go above and beyond expectations as they bring light to a phase of life that can be very dark for many.

What Does A Death Doula Actually Do?

A great definition is given on DoulaGivers.com,

Legacy: We are all born and we all die; it’s what we do in the middle that creates our legacy. What we leave behind is far more than simply wealth and possessions. We can share our story or give wisdom, advice, love, and support even after we have passed. And in doing so, give the future a glimpse of your essence – who you were, how you saw the world, and what gave your life. Death Doulas can help patients with the powerful, uplifting process of developing a legacy plan.

Presence: The last phase of our life can stir fear and anxiety as we each face our end-of-life. This is simply because we have not walked this path before. Having someone present with the experience and training in such a time can bring a sense of comfort and familiarity to the otherwise unfamiliar. Death Doulas provide holistic support as they accompany individuals and their families before, during, and after death.

Dignity: Everyone wants to have a positive passing where they maintain dignity and honor as they exit life. We all have our own values, traditions, and belief systems that will influence our vision and expectation of what that would look like. Creating an environment that represents that vision is important. This along with developing a legacy and presence work, is what an End-of-Life Doula brings to you and your family.

Here’s An Example

In a story from GlobalNews Canada, Michael Crane explains his experience upon meeting death doula Barb Philips. After asking her what she did for a living, he said, “I was very intrigued and very interested when she started talking about being a death coach and actually walking alongside the family who is experiencing a death or a pending loss.”

A few months later, he was feeling overwhelmed about his mother’s impending death and decided to reach out to Philips for assistance. “I’ll never forget the first discussion with her. I basically was crying the entire time,” he said. “It was the first time I had talked about my mother’s death with someone outside our family in that level of depth and detail.”

Philips helped the family engage in a more candid conversation about death that Crane believes would not otherwise have happened. She talked to his mother openly about exactly what was happening and how she was feeling, mentally, physically and spiritually. After his mother passed away, the doula helped the family to plan the funeral and fulfill all of their mother’s wishes.

Do We Live In A Death-Denying Culture?

Philips believes that, for the most part, talking about dying and to people who are dying about their experience is still taboo. Because of this, families are often left in a state of shock and haven’t allowed themselves the time or space to properly grieve.

“People’s grief is more engaged at the very beginning,” she said of her practice. “It’s seen as something viable and valuable rather than trying to shut it off.”

Make Way For The Emergence Of Death Doulas

The understanding and need for this type of end of life care is growing at a rapid rate. Many people feel called to enter into a role like this after feeling like they weren’t given the tools they needed to properly lay their loved one to rest. Others had the experience of a death doula and saw just how beneficial this practice is.

With a growing number of elderly and ill people, this knowledge is starting to proliferate at a very important time. With many certifications becoming available, it is now easier to train and gain the tools that are necessary for this type of care.

Death is simply a part of life, and the more we begin to understand and ultimately embrace this process, the easier it becomes for everyone involved. How lovely that this practice is gaining such popularity; it just goes to show how much things are really changing in comparison to the old and often outdated practices of mainstream medicine. Hallelujah!

Much Love

Stanford’s Most Successful Remote Viewer Reveals Location Of 4 Alien Bases On Earth

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

The U.S. had a program called STARGATE. It ran for 25 years, where remote viewing was highly successful. Many of the 'viewers' have since been speaking about their ET encounters. One of them identified the location of 4 ET bases here on Earth.

  • Reflect On:

Why are so many people from within this program sharing such information? Is remote viewing something military has used quietly for some time? It was extremely successful and credible practice, but why wasn't this part of the declassification?

What is remote viewing? It’s an ability that allows the ‘viewer’ to be able to describe a remote geographical location up to several hundred thousand kilometres away (even more) from their physical location — one that they have never been to.

This skill was taught to soldiers in multiple countries around the world, and from what I understand, still is. In the United States, the Remote Viewing program ran for 25 years at Stanford Research Institute before 70 percent of it was declassified, it was run in conjunction with the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

In 1976, a presentation was given at the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on a paper published by the Institute on behalf of Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ, key players in what became known as the STARGATE project.  The paper was titled “A Perceptual Channel For Information Transfer Over Kilometer Distances: Historical Perspectives and Recent Research.” After its publication, that’s when everything went dark, into the world of Special Access Programs (SAPs), so sensitive that they are exempt from reporting to Congress.

After its declassification in 1995, or at least, partial declassification, the Department of Defense and those involved revealed an exceptionally high success rate.

To summarize, over the years, the back-and-forth criticism of protocols, refinement of methods, and successful replication of this type of remote viewing in independent laboratories has yielded considerable scientific evidence for the reality of the [remote viewing] phenomenon. Adding to the strength of these results was the discovery that a growing number of individuals could be found to demonstrate high-quality remote viewing, often to their own surprise. . . . The development of this capability at SRI has evolved to the point where visiting CIA personnel with no previous exposure to such concepts have performed well under controlled laboratory conditions.” (source)

Multiple examples were used, from locating a lost spy plane in Africa, viewing future events, as well as past events. Remote viewing is not limited to time, it’s a quantum phenomenon, like most parapsychological phenomena. In the declassified literature, there are many shocking examples where remote viewing was successfully used for intelligence purposes, which makes sense given the fact the government decided to fund it for 25 years.

advertisement - learn more

It was also used to discover the Rings around Jupiter, a man by the name of Ingo Swann, one of the programs best remote viewers was able to describe and view a ring around Jupiter, which at the time, scientists had no idea even existed. This happened before NASA’s Pioneer 10 spacecraft flew by the planet, confirming that the ring did actually exist.

This is amazing because at the time there was no way to even perceive rings existing around planets…

To determine whether it was necessary to have a ‘beacon’ individual at the target site, Swann suggested carrying out an experiment to remote view the planet Jupiter before the upcoming NASA Pioneer 10 flyby. In that case, much to his chagrin (and ours) he found a ring around Jupiter, and wondered if perhaps he had remote viewed Saturn by mistake. Our colleagues in astronomy were quite unimpressed as well, until the flyby revealed that an unanticipated ring did in fact exist (source)

Here is a great brief timeline of government Remote Viewing.

The Common Theme Among Remote Views Is: Extraterrestrial

Since the declassification of the program, many people from within it, remote viewers, as well as army personnel and academics have come out and spoken about the program. The most popular viewer within the program, Ingo Swann, as mentioned above, wrote a book called “penetration” where he provided more details about the program that we didn’t get from the government files. He described viewing humanoid bodies on the moon, working on something (back side of the moon), as well as tall structures, buildings and more. He was very outspoken about the extraterrestrial presence that was apparently known about within these programs.

Joseph Mcmoneagle was another one, who also had experiences remote viewing an extraterrestrial presence, this time it came from Mars. Many of them have been outspoken about the extraterrestrial presence.

On a side note, while mentioning Mars and remote viewings, it’s noteworthy to bring awareness to the fact that six former U.S. Army remote viewers were commissioned by officials within the Russian space program to study the cause of Phobos II’s disappearance. The viewers issued a final report titled, “Enigma Penetration: Soviet Phobos II Space Craft Images Anomaly.”

As Jim Marrs points out, in his novel, Our Occulted History,

The report stated that a disc-shaped object rose from the Martian surface towards Phobos II while a second object moved into even closer proximity and scanned the probe with a penetrating particle beam device, which disrupted the communication and guidance equipment. The out-of-control Soviet craft was then struck by a “micrometeorite” that delivered the coupe de grace. The remote viewers said this may have been no accident, as it seems that all of the technology put into space from Earth is scrutinized closely by nonhumans….After being struck, Phobos II spiraled down, crashing onto the Martian surface.

The 4 Alien Bases

Then, there is Pat Price, who, along with Ingo Swann, is described as one of SRI’s most successful viewers, his sessions were extremely accurate. Within the remote viewing community, among the declassified literature, he is best known for his sketches of gantries and cranes which matched CIA intelligence photographs he had never seen, this was during the cold war.

Russel Targ, the co-founder of the program at RSI has also recently given lectures on “everything” he “knows about ESP.” In fact, his TED talk about it was cancelled, you can watch that here.

According to Atwater, Pricer had successfully remote viewed 4 extraterrestrial ‘bases’ stationed on Earth.  One was located underneath Mount Ziel, another under Mount Perdido in Spain, as well as Mount Inyangani in Zimbabwe, and in Alaska, underneath Mount Hayes.

This comes from a plethora of sources, including one of the leading researchers in the field, Timothy Good, from his book, Unearthly Disclosure.

What’s also interesting to note is the lore associated with these mountains, take Inaynagi, for example. There are no shortages of strange disappearances of those who go wandering in this region, it’s well-known in the region and the mountain has been surrounded by mysterious lore for a long time.

Credo Mutwa

One interesting story comes from  Credo Mutwa, born in 1921, he’s a Zulu Sangoma, a traditional healer, from southern Africa. He has done tremendous humanitarian work in Africa and is extremely knowledgeable in Zulu tradition and lore.

Now, there are uncountable amounts of stories pertaining to extraterrestrial contact, if even one of them true, it’s fascinating. Many of these stories corroborate with each other and coupled with proof for the extraterrestrial hypothesis regarding UFOs, and all of the testimony from people with ‘credibility, it’s not ridiculous at all to contemplate.

In the bushes of the mountain, while Mutwa was a Sangoma apprentice, he was searching for a herb which he planned to use as medicine. Something he did quite often to bring health back to his people, specifically with regards to the HIV pandemic in Africa, a disease he says was created to destroy the African population.

While he was doing so, he was covered by a bright blue mist, which, he said “was swirling all around me, getting between me and the eastern landscape.” Later, he found himself in what he described as underground, underneath the mountain. This is interesting because it’s exactly what the remote viewer Pat Price describes.

The next thing he knew, he was lying on a table of some sort. His boots and trousers were missing. He was approached by a group of grey skinned humanoid creatures, with Very large heads, very thing arms, and very thing legs. (source)

A lot of this information also comes from several interviews Mutwa did with David Icke.

Price described the occupants of these bases as ‘looking like Homo Sapiens, except for the lungs, heart, blood, and eyes.”

Mutawa wanted to flee, but couldn’t move and was Paralyzed,

I just lay there like a goat on a sacrificial altar

Mutwa was then subjected to some kind of operation on his left thigh, which caused him to scream out in agony. An abundance of blood flowed from the wound. Next, one of the creatures stuck a silver, pen-like object up his right nasal passage; then yanked it out. “The pain,” he says, “was out of this world.”…The pain subsided, however, when one of the creatures – who was bigger and taller than the others, and who possessed an air of authority – placed its hand on Mutwa’s forehead. Mutwa could ‘sense’ that the creature was female, despite the fact that ‘she’ lacked breasts and other feminine characteristics. Staring at Mutwa intently, it projected visions of destruction into his mind. He saw cities being destroyed by floods, fires and other natural disasters. (source)

He speaks at length of these experiences in his interviews with David Icke.

Cred Mutwa

He goes on to describe an instrument being inserted into his penis, and as soon as it was taken out, his bladder opened and he urinated hard. Another creature came in and had pink skin, blue eyes, high cheekbones and looked almost human. The creature then “mounted Mutwa like “a crazy Zulu girl” and proceeded to have sex with him.

This is another common theme among many supposed extraterrestrial contactees. He said during this encounter, a device was used to make Mutwa ejaculate “too much,” and after the ordeal, he was in tremendous amounts of pain.

It’s important to mention that numerous extraterrestrial encounters have been described, both of what as we perceive as “friendly” and “unfriendly” contact, as well as ‘unfriendly procedures’ being performed, with the strange beings sometimes comforting the human through the process, and sometimes not…

It’s strange, to say the least, but as far as underground alien bases, it’s a possibility.

An Interesting Encounter of Mine

I used to teach on a First Nations reserve, in a place called North Spirit Lake. I came home for the holidays, and when I arrived in Toronto I was waiting for the train, and next to me was a gentleman in uniform. Anytime I see what appears to be a senior officer in uniform, I always ask questions… This one was a veteran, having served overseas in the Middle East for 5 years, and was now with the Coast Guard. Instantaneously, I thought of the ocean, and underwater military bases, having studies them in-depth. I knew he would most like be aware of their existence being with the Coast Guard. This was always 10 years ago, when it was taboo to talk about ‘strange’ things, that no longer seem so taboo anymore…

I asked him about HAARP, his eyes lit up wide, he was shocked and surprised and told me he couldn’t talk about it. I asked him about in-bottom and under-ocean military bases, the same thing happened… I asked him about extraterrestrials and what was going on with that, he told me to “come work for us and ask them yourself.”

Information Warfare & Alex Jones: Journalistic Responsibility In A Post-Truth Era

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

With the Alex Jones and Infowars ban, the game is changing as to how YouTube, Facebook, Apple and other social media giants feature content. Consumers of news must now be vigilant and proactive in the truth discovery process.

  • Reflect On:

As conscious truth-seekers, what standards should we hold media sources, journalists, and corporations to? In the realm of public discourse, are popular pundits and theorists like Alex Jones held to sufficient standards of journalistic integrity?

In our quest for truth, we all have intuitions, hunches, and personal insights that we may not be able to prove.  Whether it’s spiritual premonitions, conspiracy theories, or superstitious synchronicity, our conscious thought is an explorer in a universe of ideas, possibilities, and theories.  However, if there is no filter in place to bring form and meaning to these free-flowing ideas, the truth quickly becomes whatever we want it to be; feelings and opinions become just as “true” as verifiable, well-researched facts.

The revolutionary ideas that produced the American experiment enshrining the Enlightenment principle of freedom of expression has produced an unchained intellect.  With that conscious liberty comes a responsibility to quest for truth with journalistic integrity.  In our current media free-fall of anything goes think-pieces and political punditry, we have reached a post-truth stage in our history where “fake news” is simply whatever we want it to be, usually characterized by a viewpoint we disagree with.

As explorers of consciousness, we have a deep responsibility to substantiate our thoughts & theories in order to foster legitimate discussion of the important matters of our time.

“We risk being the first people in history to have been
able to make their illusions so vivid, so persuasive,
so ‘realistic’ that they can live in them.” — Daniel J. Boorstin, The Image: A Guide to
Pseudo-Events in America (1961)

Alex Jones & The “Mainstream” Media

By now, everyone has chimed in on the concerted effort among major companies (YouTube, Facebook, Apple) to ban Alex Jones & Infowars from its platforms.  Many in the conscious community remember when Alex first came on the scene in Austin, Texas where he developed his signature gravelly voice that shouted conspiracy from the mountaintop. Since his early underground days on community radio, Jones has ascended in popularity and has become a prominent voice in media buoyed by audiences fascinated with his conspiratorial takes and fervent support of President Trump (who granted Infowars White House press passes after his election in 2016).

Jones and his supporters continually lambast the “mainstream media” when framing commentary on global events.  However, Alex Jones has become mainstream media, boasting view stats in the billions with subscribers in the millions that rival and eclipse traditional media giants like CNN and NBC.

Since Jones was banned, his Infowars app has surged on the Google Play and iTunes charts, ranking third among trending apps behind only Twitter and News Break.  It’s important to acknowledge just how vast the Alex Jones audience has become, and the bulk of his viewers solely rely on Infowars for information gathering on political and global events.

Ironically, the ascent of Alex Jones into the mainstream has been buoyed by Facebook & YouTube, who actively promoted and pushed out Alex Jones content in their respective feeds as his popularity sky-rocketed and his content raked in considerable advertisement profits for the Silicon Valley behemoths.  But unlike newspapers and traditional media sources who are liable for what they publish, Facebook & YouTube have been shielded from liability in the U.S. for what their users publish – which largely has resulted in the quest for truth taking a back-seat to the quest to go virile.

Freedom Of Speech & Responsibility

The aptly named “Infowars” is emblematic of the information war that is currently taking place in America.  From traditional media giants like Fox, CNN & MSNBC to emerging internet media forces like The Young Turks, Mark Dice & Secular Talk, there is a jockeying for power and news authority that is shaking up the global political landscape – and this is significantly changing how (and what) people think.

Indeed, freedom of speech and a free press is something that truth-seekers should hold sacred, but Jones being banned is not about freedom of speech.  Jones is free to broadcast his message as he sees fit – but that doesn’t guarantee that private companies like YouTube and Facebook will feature his content.

An important question that must be answered in response to the ban is this: What responsibility should Alex Jones, YouTube & Facebook assume in presenting “truth” to audiences?  While many say that they should bear no responsibility as it pertains to journalistic integrity, what effect is that having on our aggregate consciousness?  America is in a mental health crisis.  Suicides are increasing at alarming rates, iPhones, social media and technology have dominated the lives of young children with distraction and fantasy. Reality is becoming so abstract that more and more are losing grip on their day-to-day lives, opting to live in a world where truth is malleable and whatever you want it to be.

Media sources like Infowars that purposely and knowingly perpetuate false information and sensationalized conspiracy under the guise of “the truth that the mainstream media won’t tell you” have significantly contributed to the growing American population that is misinformed and increasingly mentally unstable.

“Every single school/public shooting is a hoax staged with crisis actors.” “Queen Elizabeth is converting to Islam and is a Jihadi.”  “Democrats (and only Democrats) are running a global prostitution ring.” “Obama is having sex with 10 men a day on taxpayer dime.”

The aforementioned are actual quotes and takes from recent Alex Jones broadcasts, and they are seeding millions of minds with precisely what they are purportedly railing against: Fake News.  In effect, Jones has produced the same kind of disinformation that he accuses “The Liberal Left” of producing – and that has a very real effect on public consciousness.  In order to educate, enlighten, and challenge the conventionally programmed mind, you must credibly appeal to truth.  You cannot do that when you are peddling junk theories.  There are real instances of false flag events and manipulated events for geopolitical gain without us pressing to find conspiracy where there is none.

There are real global cabals and child prostitution rings to expose and bring to justice without us having to go down a rabbit hole of gutter dialogue, obsessing over “Pizzagate” and other poorly evidenced theories while actual instances of human trafficking are taking place right in front of our eyes. There is a real war on our planet, environment and bodily integrity without entertaining lunatic claims that “they are putting chemicals in the water that make frogs gay!”

This is not to say that there aren’t legitimate grievances and critiques of traditional media.  The American public’s faith in the media is at a historic law – and there is good reason for that.  The level of discourse, global news coverage, and critical thinking displayed on CNN, NBC, & Fox are numbingly restrictive, biased, and dishonest.  Major newspapers were complicit in presenting false and poorly sourced information to readers that precipitated the criminal and illegal Iraq War.  The New York Times (and others) peddled conspiracy theories from the NeoCon Bush Administration which knowingly lied and deceived Americans with lies and false information – and this greatly influenced public opinion in the lead-up to the war.

Both things can be true: Our media institutions have often failed to enlighten and inform us – *and* Alex Jones is contributing to the post-truth movement that is further skewing truth in favor of journalistic anarchy and chaos.  There are kernels of truth that can be found on Infowars, just as there are kernels of truth to be found within traditional, “mainstream” media.  But what separates the real from the fake are journalists and media that take deep personal responsibility in presenting information, news & intelligence that is in service to truth, and not just in service to shares, likes, views & trending statistics regardless of the actual integrity of the content.

While many rail against the New York Times or the Washington Post, there is a level of journalistic standard (citation, sourced information, liability for slander/libel) that is too often absent from alternative news.  As writers within conscious media, we should take that responsibility to heart as we are already exploring thought forms, theories, and ideas that are often outside of the parameters of what the restrictive corporate media sources will broadcast and publish.  It is imperative that we report and explore ideas with integrity, and that means thoroughly investigating, researching, and filtering our ideas and claims before blindly adopting popularized conspiracy theory that has no firm grounding to stand on.

Unintended Consequences of “Chilling” Alex Jones Content

Regardless of whether you resonate with Alex Jones and his content, the larger question to explore is the implication of banning his content on YouTube, Facebook and other mainstream platforms.  As reported above, Infowars has gained massive popularity and its app has soared since the ban.  Banning Jones only increases his allure and – in effect – martyrs Jones and Infowars, giving credence to supporters who feel that his message is being chilled and suppressed by the Deep State.

This type of censorship often produces unintended consequences.  For example, Europe has criminalized the denial of the holocaust.  The result of that has seen more people in Europe actually denying the holocaust, as their viewpoint gets pushed to the fringes and foments rebellion amongst those who declare that the State is suppressing their voice.  America leans more heavily on free speech than any country in the world, creating an environment where there’s a competition of opposing views and a marketplace of ideas.

This traditional American defense of freedom of speech posits the notion that the way to challenge the false claims of someone like Alex Jones is to challenge that viewpoint, expose it, and present an argument so that readers/viewers can make up their own mind.  The censorship of Jones is a relative divorce from this principle, and there is legitimate concern as to whether a precedent will be set to ban other commentators and media sources simply because they report, write, and opine on controversial topics and conspiracy.

Unlike authoritarian regimes in China and Russia, American jurisprudence has long held that the State is not permitted to infringe upon free speech unless speech directly incites violence.  Given the immense power and influence of giant companies like Facebook and YouTube, the question that is now being presented is whether they are the proper arbiters of truth and permissible dialogue.  Facebook & YouTube have never been neutral in presenting information.  They control timelines and push certain content that is trending in order to increase their advertisement sales, viewership, and profitability – which is one reason why Alex Jones became so popular in the first place.  Just as our very own Joe Martino reported earlier this week, Facebook deliberately governs the content that you see and thus can greatly influence (or diminish) any organization’s reach and view-power.

Relying on Facebook & YouTube – en masse – for information and access to news is problematic in itself – and this challenges consumer behavior to be proactive in its quest for information.  Taking control of the narrative by not being simply a receiver of a manipulated timeline will become paramount.  Visiting websites directly will become an important way to sift through the emerging regulation and censorship that will change the way companies like YouTube and Facebook operate.  While they’ve been immune from liability for slander and defamation (unlike traditional newspapers and media), the U.S. Congress is intent on taking away the absolute shield of protection for these corporations.  Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) actually wrote the law himself (circa 1996) which prevented internet companies from being sued over user-generated content.

Earlier this week he stated,

“I just want to be clear, as the author of Section 230, the days when these pipelines are considered neutral are over.”

This signals a new era of social media regulation that will have significant impact on how news and opinion are presented on platforms like YouTube and Facebook.   This presents a challenge to you: the truth-seeker; the information gatherer; the critical thinker. How active will you be in seeking out truth?  Will you rely on the State for your information? Will you rely on YouTube and Facebook for your information?  Will you actively search for and frequent the journalism and viewpoints that resonate with you, regardless of censorship?

As journalists, will we take more responsibility in our own viewpoints, ensuring that standards of empirical truth and grounded arguments are upheld? We are at a dangerous point in our history as it pertains to steering the collective consciousness of the planet.  Now more than ever, discernment and active participation in creating the narrative of now is a task that cannot be left to the control of someone or something else.  As with everything else, it starts from within to where we are self-reliant in our quest for truth. Once we take that responsibility within ourselves, we will see that moral imperative extended to institutions (like Big Media) which have too often twisted reality via half-truths and mis-truths to service veiled agendas.
