The New Science of Consciousness: Toward the Next Great Scientific Revolution

In Brief

  • The Facts:

A new scientific revolution is upon us, which is why hundreds of scientists are gathering to emphasize that matter is not the only reality. There is an entire non-physical reality that's actually real, and it plays a huge role for science.

  • Reflect On:

Science has long been a reflection of human belief, if something is too unbelievable and offends belief systems, it's usually ignored or criticised. Post material science has tremendous implications in understanding ourselves and reality.

In the 1960s, historian and philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn published a book titled The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, which became very influential in both academic and popular circles. In this book, Kuhn proposed that paradigms—theoretical frameworks of scientific disciplines within which theories are formulated and experiments performed—can and should change because sooner or later, they fail to explain observed phenomena.

According to Kuhn, when anomalies—experimental observations or other empirical evidence which violates the widely accepted theoretical framework—that the paradigm cannot accommodate accumulate, and persistent efforts by scientists fail to elucidate these anomalies, the scientific community begins to lose confidence in the dominant paradigm and a crisis period ensues. A new paradigm, competing with the old for supremacy, can now be entertained. This new paradigm is not just an extension of the old paradigm, but a completely different worldview.

With regard to the study of consciousness, the currently reigning paradigm, known as scientific materialism (or simply materialism), erroneously claims that everything is material (i.e. made up exclusively of physical matter) and that all phenomena are the result of purely material interactions. This worldview implies that mind and consciousness—and all that we subjectively experience (e.g. our memories, emotions, goals, and spiritual epiphanies)—are identical with or can be reduced to electrical and chemical processes in the brain. Another implication of the materialist paradigm is that our thoughts and intentions cannot have any effect upon our brains and bodies, our actions, and the physical world, since the mind cannot directly affect at a distance physical and biological systems. In other words, we human beings are nothing but complex biophysical machines. As a result, our consciousness and personality automatically vanish when we die.

Materialism has more or less dominated science and the academic word for centuries, despite the fact that many of the leading pioneers in modern science have either implicitly or explicitly rejected it. This dominance has seriously constricted the sciences and hampered the development of the study of mind, consciousness, and spirituality. Furthermore, faith in this paradigm as an exclusive explanatory framework for reality has compelled many scientists to neglect certain aspects of the subjective dimension of human experience. This has led to a severely distorted and impoverished understanding of ourselves and our place in nature.

The Evidence Challenging Scientific Materialism

There is mounting evidence that the materialist paradigm is obsolete. For instance, studies of the so-called “psi phenomena” (e.g. telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition) indicate that we can sometimes receive meaningful information without the use of ordinary senses, and in ways that transcend the habitual space and time constraints. Furthermore, psi research demonstrates that we can mentally influence—at a distance—physical devices and living organisms (including other human beings). Research also shows that distant minds may behave in ways that are nonlocally correlated, i.e. the correlations between distant minds are hypothesized to be unmediated (they are not linked to any known energetic signal), unmitigated (they do not degrade with increasing distance), and immediate (they appear to be simultaneous). Psi phenomena are so common that they cannot be viewed as anomalous nor as exceptions to natural laws, but as indications of the need for a broader explanatory framework that cannot be predicated on materialism.

Moreover, conscious mental activity can be experienced in clinical death during a cardiac arrest (this is what has been called a “near-death experience” [NDE]). Some near-death experiencers (NDErs) have reported veridical out-of-body perceptions (i.e. perceptions that can be proven to coincide with reality) that occurred during cardiac arrest. NDErs also report profound spiritual experiences during NDEs triggered by cardiac arrest. It is noteworthy that the electrical activity of the brain ceases within a few seconds following a cardiac arrest.

In other respects, controlled laboratory experiments have documented that skilled research mediums (people who claim that they can communicate with the minds of people who have physically died) can sometimes obtain highly accurate information about deceased individuals. Additionally, as in the case of mediumship research, reincarnation research also supports the conclusion that mind can exist separate from the brain.

Likewise, quantum physics (QP) convincingly refutes scientific materialism. Indeed, QP has called into question the material foundations of the world by showing that atoms and subatomic particles are not really objects—they do not exist with certainty at definite spatial locations and definite times. Rather, they show “tendencies to exist,” forming a world of potentialities within the quantum domain. Moreover, physicists have discovered that particles being observed and the observer—the physicist and the method used for observation—are somehow linked, and the results of the observation seem to be influenced by the physicist’s conscious intent. This phenomenon has led towering figures of QP to propose that the consciousness of the physicist is vital to the existence of the physical events being observed, and that mental events, such as intention, can affect the physical world.

The Emerging Postmaterialist Paradigm

Given that materialist theories of the mind cannot explain the evidence briefly presented above, and have failed to elucidate how brain could produce mental functions and consciousness, I posit that it is now time to free ourselves from the shackles and blinders of the old materialist paradigm, and enlarge our conception of the natural world.

Even though we do not have all the answers yet, it is nonetheless already possible to sketch out an outline of a postmaterialist paradigm (PMP), based on the various lines of empirical evidence presented in this article. From my perspective, here are some key elements of this new paradigm:

1. Mind is irreducible, and its ontological status is as primordial as that of matter, energy, and space-time. In addition, mind cannot be derived from matter and reduced to anything more basic.

2. As psi phenomena reveal, there is a deep interconnectedness between the mental world and the physical world, which are not really separated—they only appear to be separated. Actually, the mental world and the physical world are deeply interconnected, since they are complementary aspects (or manifestations) arising out of a common ground.

3. The mind (will/intention) acts as a force, i.e. it can affect the state of the physical world, and operate in a nonlocal fashion. This implies that mind is not confined to specific points in space, such as brains and bodies, nor to specific points in time, such as the present.

4. The brain acts as a transceiver of mental activity, i.e. the mind works through the brain, but is not produced by it. The fact that mental functions are disturbed when the brain is damaged does not prove that the brain generates mind and consciousness.

In line with the idea that the brain may be an interface for the mind, this organ may be compared to a television set. This device receives broadcast signals (electromagnetic waves) and converts them into image and sound. If we damage the electronic components within the TV, we may induce a distortion of the image on the screen and the sound, because the capacity of the TV to receive and decode the broadcast signals is impaired. But this does not mean that the broadcast signals (and the program) are actually produced by the TV. Likewise, damage to a specific region of the brain may disrupt the mental processes mediated by this cerebral structure, but such disruption does not entail that these mental processes are reducible to neural activity in this area of the brain.

Implications of the Postmaterialist Paradigm

Individually and collectively, the PMP has far-reaching implications. This paradigm re-enchants the world and profoundly alters the vision we have of ourselves, giving us back our dignity and power as human beings. The PMP also fosters positive values such as compassion, respect, care, love, and peace, because it makes us realize that the boundaries between self and others are permeable. In doing so, this paradigm promotes an awareness of the deep interconnection between ourselves and nature at large, including all levels of physical organization. Such interconnection may also encompass non-physical, spiritual realms.

Concerning this topic, it should be noted here that the PMP acknowledges spiritual experiences, which relate to a fundamental dimension of human existence and are frequently reported across all cultures: within the postmaterialist framework, these experiences are not considered a priori as fantasies or the symptoms of pathological processes. Finally, by emphasizing a deep connection between ourselves and nature, the PMP also promotes environmental awareness and the preservation of our biosphere. In that sense, the model of reality associated with the PMP may help humanity to create a sustainable civilization and to blossom.

Conclusion

The materialist worldview, which has dominated science and academia over the last few centuries, has run its course. At last, we are reaching a tipping point in the accumulation of evidence and deeper understanding, and the old materialist worldview has started to crumble.

As Thomas Kuhn insightfully noted, the history of science has been marked by a few special moments that were characterized by major conceptual breakthroughs. Kuhn called these breakthroughs paradigm shifts or changes. Pivotal paradigm changes include the shift in thinking that (a) the Earth was flat, to the Earth being spherical, that (b) the Sun revolved around the Earth, to the Earth revolving around the Sun, that (c) matter was solid and fixed (how we conventionally experience it), to matter being mostly “empty space”.

It appears that we are now closing in on another crucial paradigm shift, namely the transition from materialist science to postmaterialist science. Indeed, there are clear signs that the PMP is gaining traction. For instance, a few years ago, the Manifesto for a Postmaterialist Science was published (see http://opensciences.org/about/manifesto-for-a-post-materialist-science). Since its publication, this document has been signed by more than 300 scientists and philosophers from around the world. Furthermore, last year, the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences has been founded, and a documentary film about the new science of consciousness Expanding Reality, has just been released.

The transition from materialist science to postmaterialist science, which holds great promise for science, will lead us to the next great scientific revolution, and will be of vital importance to the evolution of human civilization. I am convinced that this transition will be even more pivotal than that from geocentrism to heliocentrism.

CIA Document Demonstrates The Remarkable ‘Paranormal Writing’ Ability of a Gifted Girl

Avatar

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

A study from China, translated and archived in the CIA's electronic reading room, demonstrates the ability of a gifted girl to physically write on a piece of paper inside a closed container using nothing but her mind.

  • Reflect On:

How much do we really know about ourselves and what we are capable of?

Do paranormal abilities exist? A bold question we often feel is based on belief and not science. But looking to parameters that can help determine if something is real or not in our world, like peer-reviewed publications, video footage, and the ability to experience something, then yes, paranormal abilities do exist and there are many different examples to choose from that clearly illustrates this.

The funny thing is, these abilities are studied and trained at the highest levels of government and military, yet within academia, it’s almost completely ignored.

As the Chinese Institute of Atomic Energy pointed out in 1991, in a study archived by the CIA:

“Such phenomena and paranormal abilities of the human body are unimaginable for ordinary people. Nevertheless they are really true.”

In the study the Chinese researchers provide multiple examples of a Qi Gong master, who under double-blind controlled conditions, was able to teleport small objects out of containers from one location to another using nothing but mental influence (breaking through spatial barriers). Multiple test subjects were able to do this including gifted children. This is just one example of research and published observation of this type of phenomenon under tight controls.

Another great example and the main subject of this article, comes from a study published in The Chinese Journal of Somatic Sciences by researchers from Fudan University, a major research university located in Shanghai. The study is/was also documented and translated by the CIA at the time, but not approved for release until the year 2000.

The study is titled Investigation Into The Force of Parapsychological Writing. The study explains that parapsychological writing is only one form of paranormal abilities displayed by humans, and cites a “large number of experiments” where this type of phenomenon has been demonstrated and documented repeatedly.

Parapsychological writing includes a number of complex parapsychological phenomenon including moving the writing instrument, breaking through spatial barriers and thought directed writing. These paranormal phenomenon cannot be explained using modern scientific knowledge. However, the recording of paranormal phenomena, especially of the accumulation of data on experiments conducted using strict scientific methods must eventually approach and disclose the truth about this unknown realm.

The study was designed to detect any type of possible “force” that could somehow be measured when gifted people demonstrated their ‘paranormal’ ability. Three experiments to do this were conducted.

The first one used a mechanical balance and a girl named “Little Gi.” The balance had a glass cover and was very sensitive to lightweight objects. On the left plate of the balance, the researchers placed a plastic film canister. Inside that film canister they placed a square of white paper. The lid to the film canister was slightly open. On the right hand side plate of the mechanical balance, they placed a piece of material identical to the weight of the canister with the piece of paper inside it, so the balance would be kept level.

More illustrations are available in the study.

Placed next to the mechanical balance was a concrete slab with a pen on it.

The experiment required Little Gi to use her thoughts to “write” or “draw” on the piece of paper located inside of the film canister with a black ink fountain pen. The results were incredible:

She was to concentrate her thoughts on this to the exception of everything else. We conducted a total of nine experiments, of which three were successful. Each experiment lasted for 15 to 25 minutes. The words and drawings were all black like the ink in the fountain pen used in the experiment. In the three successful experiments, two had clear characters and drawings and the other had fairly blurry circles and dots. Neither of the two observers saw the mechanical balance move at all, demonstrating that the film canister was not under any observable “outside force”.

If you’re floored by the claimed results of this study, you’re certainly not alone. What we’re seeing here is an example that humans may have abilities far beyond what we are aware of today, and that it may be a matter of development for others to realize these abilities.

For me, it would have been interesting if before and after the experiment they examined the ink inside of the pen to determine if it somehow was the source of the writing. But the various pens used had different color ink, and in the next experiment, researchers mention how the ink marks that appeared on paper were both blue and green, just like the ink in the pens.

The second experiment used a thermobalance to try and detect some sort of force generated by the mental will of the subjects. A thermobalance gives a continuous recording of the relationship between mass and temperature. In the experiment, a blank piece of tape was stuck to one of the arms of the thermobalance. The arm was covered with a glass tube to keep air currents from affecting the experiment. Little Ji sat at the edge of a table that was 0.5 meters from the balance with her back turned to the instrument. On the table there was a fountain pen.

The experiment required that the subject use her thoughts to “write” on the white tape with the fountain pen. During the experiment, those administering the experiment always observed the progress of the experiment from the side, and the automatic recorder drew the weight/time graph. Ten experiments were conducted in all, and three of these were successful. Each experiment lated approximately 20 minutes. The “writing” was always dots in the same color as the ink used in the fountain pens in the experiment (green and blue).

Yet another incredible result, but they weren’t done.

The third experiment was similar to the previous two. Only this time it used a piezoelectric crystal to try and detect some sort of electromagnetic force. There was no force detected, but multiple subjects in this experiment were able to successfully write on the blank paper ten successful times.

There is no known and widely accepted explanation for the phenomenon observed by the researchers, and perhaps our methods of detecting some type of “force” aren’t advanced enough yet. Regardless, these abilities are real and have been demonstrated many times, yet we fail to come up with an explanation to explain them. Moreover, most people would likely be too skeptical to even wish to attempt to wrap their minds around how this is happening, and it would likely challenge their entire worldview.

The authors of the study explain that:

…the “pen” appears in their “mind”, they imagine the object on which the pen is to write (paper, tape, etc). Finally, the ‘pen’ will suddenly write or make a mark on the paper or tape in their minds with a flash and the process is over. There are also times when the person will use thought to image the paper or tape and then to imagine the “pen”, and finally the flash described above.

The authors hypothesize that some sort of thought waves are directly interacting with the “matter waves” of these objects, but again, there is no possible way to tell exactly what is going on. Right now it remains unexplainable, but one thing seems certain, the power, intention and sheer will of the human body, possibly not only of the mind, is somehow interacting with physical material matter. We’ve seen this in a number of consciousness and quantum physics experiments at the quantum level, and also at the conventional level using, in this case, people with ‘paranormal’ abilities.

Why This Is Important: The scientific study of such phenomenon is often ignored, belittled and ridiculed from the get go. Many people, especially within the scientific community, are quick to instantly dismiss the possibility that such things can be true or possible. Not examining phenomena, or at least acknowledging the results of a phenomenon based on what we believe to be true or not, is not very scientific. Once again, this demonstrates a common challenge amongst humanity that we are often not willing to look at information that could deeply challenge our foundational worldview.

Anybody looking at this subject matter from an objective standpoint would no doubt have their beliefs challenged. Studies in this field really make one question the true nature of our reality, what we are capable of, and how much we know about ourselves. It’s no secret that a very conservative mainstream scientific establishment often rejects anomalies based on subject matter alone.

How much do we limit our consciousness and perceptions about our world, who we truly are, and what we are capable of as a result of our beliefs, and our determination to say “this is the way things are?”

Cassandra Vieten, PhD and President/CEO at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which was founded by Apollo 14’s Dr. Edgar Mitchell touches upon this point in her piece, it’s a quote I’ve used many times to illustrate this point “When Skeptics Face The Evidence.”

There seems to be a deep concern that the whole field will be tarnished by studying a phenomenon that is tainted by its association with superstition, spiritualism, and magic. Protecting against this possibility sometimes seems more important than encouraging scientific exploration or protecting academic freedom. But this may be changing. The session I presented in was very well-attended, and I found that most people, while not exactly open-minded, were open-hearted, thoughtful, and willing to engage in respectful discussion about the topic.

The Takeaway: It’s important to mention again that there are many examples of such parapsychological phenomenon. This article is only providing a tidbit on the subject. Why is most of the literature available on this subject coming from defense departments of multiple countries? Why is it that it’s studied in classified and secretive settings and not really made available or open to public scrutiny? Why are these things being studied at the highest level of government yet completely ignored and unacknowledged within academia?

I truly believe that all humans possess capabilities we are not yet aware of, and I believe this has been demonstrated quite well. In a free, open and transparent society we would be utilizing these concepts and learning more about them, simply because they seem to be a natural part of the human being.

Study in these fields can truly expand human consciousness.

That being said, I don’t believe that human beings are operating from the correct place within to utilize or learn these concepts. The collective, in some sense, craves power, service to self, and the desire to advance oneself in a materialistically inclined way, we are not yet operating from the correct level of consciousness to have these abilities present in our human experience.

It’s like technology, we can use it to make weapons, make money, not share it, or use it for the collective good. It’s a choice, but what drives our choices? It’s not our abilities or technology that can create change, it’s the level of consciousness we operate from and the place from within we implement these solutions, not the solutions themselves.

Researchers Use MRI Technology To Try & Demonstrate Telepathy Between Humans

Avatar

Published

on

In Brief

  • The Facts:

The study below has found that sending thoughts, feelings and emotions to a person, at a distance, is correlated with the activation of certain brain regions.

  • Reflect On:

How much of 'reality' is made up of and governed by 'non-physical' phenomena? How much do we know about ourselves and what we are capable of?

Transferring thoughts, feelings, emotions, or one person invoking some sort of biological response in another, one that can be measured using modern day medical equipment like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), was the subject of a 2006 study published by several researchers in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, titled Evidence for Correlations Between Distant Intentionality and Brain Function in Recipients: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis.

The study found that distant intentionality (DI), which is defined as sending thoughts at a distance (telepathy) from a ‘sender’ is actually correlated with an activation of certain brain regions of the ‘receiver.’

The study used eleven “healers” who do work in this area, and 11 other people who did not claim to be healers, but had some sort of special connection with the healer.

As the study describes:

The healers sent forms of DI that related to their own healing practices at random 2-minute intervals that were unknown to the recipient. Significant differences between experimental (send) and control (no send) procedures were found. Areas activated during the experimental procedures included the anterior and middle cingulate area, precuneus, and frontal area. It was concluded that instructions to a healer to make and intentional connection with a sensory isolated person can be correlated to changes in brain function of that individual.

The authors make it clear that the intentions of the study were not to measure healing of any ailment, but rather examine whether there was some sort of biological response when the sender sent these types of thoughts and feelings to the receiver at a distance.

While the receivers were placed in an MRI machine, the healers used a variety of techniques including touch, prayer, chant, Reiki, vibration or sound healing, Qigong and other forms of DI.

The healers were given specific information about their role in the study, and it included an “On (send)” and Off (No send)” procedures to follow. During the “On” condition, healers were sending information and trying to connect with the receiver, and during the “Off” condition they stopped. The type of information sent was described “as sending energy, prayer, or good intentions, or as thinking of the individual in the scanner and wishing for them the highest good.”

The receivers were instructed to relax and lay inside the machine, and they were not provided any information at all about the timing of the On/Off conditions, and the healers themselves were not informed about the timing of the On/Off conditions. This way they could not have relayed this information to their receivers before the scan. The healer was also in an electromagnetically shielded control room and both physically and optically isolated from the receiver in the scanner.

The authors found that “group analysis revealed significant activation in several areas of the brain” during the times when the DI practitioner was sending to the receiver. They concluded that “overall, the results show significant activation of brain regions coincident with DI intervals.”

The study goes on to mention possible criticism and challenges of the study, but again, outlines how some very compelling statistically significant results were seen.

One of the limitations was that there are no known biological processes that can really explain or identify telepathy appropriately. As a hypothesis, they mention that the study “may be interpreted as consistent with the idea of entanglement in quantum theory.” It’s important to mention just because there is no scientific way or biological methods that can be pinpointed yet to explain the phenomenon, does not mean it’s not real and not a result of human consciousness.

Quantum entanglement has occurred between matter at the tiniest level that’s able to be observed and measured. Photons have been separated into two, and what you do to one of them also happens to the other. This suggests that the two separated parts of that photon are still connected by some sort of strange invisible force, in essence, they are still one.

Entanglement has been confirmed to occur between photons, and many have speculated that certain highly organized macroscopic systems, including the brain, exhibit the property of entanglement with other complex systems. In a recent study, evidence was found for nonlocal connections between separated preparations of human neurons. These findings, plus the current study correlating brain activity in two sensory-isolated humans, do not fit the classic model of current material physics and can be interpreted as consistent with entanglement at the macroscopic level.

A number of studies like this one have taken place. Decades ago, what researchers called “extrasensory induction” was reported in 15 pairs of monozygotic twins who were isolated from each other and kept in separate rooms. In two of the 15 pairs, changes in EEG alpha brain rhythms in one twin were observed simultaneously in the other. The experiment was repeated several times yielding the same, repeatable results.

The study also cites several other EEG studies showing that a “visually evoked potential in one member of a pair of individuals who felt a close personal connection occurred at above chance rates in the non-stimulated brain of the other who was at a distance in an electromagnetically shielded room.”

A paper published in 2015 titled Distant Healing Intention Therapies: An Overview of the Scientific Evidence suggests that, without question, physiological observations, correlations and measures have been seen, and have been quite significant, but when it comes to healing somebody the results are far weaker. So, it’s safe to say that one person can invoke a physical response in another person at a distance, but when it comes to healing an ailment, from a scientific perspective not many examples exist. But some do, the 2015 studies cite a few examples of healers being able to do extraordinary things.

A study published in 2004 examined two meta-analyses and found small but significant results in 36 studies regarding direct mental influence. One of the authors on that was paper, Dr. Jessica Utts, Chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Irvine and a professor there since 2008.

Nearly 16 years after the publication of the 2004 study above, she had this to say about the phenomenon of Remote Viewing, which is the ability of one person to describe a remote geographical location, its physical characteristics and more regardless of distance. Obviously a little different than invoking a biological response in another person at a distance, but I just wanted to share the quote given the fact that I believe it pertains to most areas of parapsychology. There are a number of studies that have shown some very interesting and statistically significant results in many areas under the umbrella of parapsychology.

“What convinced me was just the evidence, the accumulating evidence as I worked in this field and I got to see more and more of the evidence. I visited the laboratories, even beyond where I was working to see what they were doing and I could see that they had really tight controls…and so I got convinced by the good science that I saw being done. And in fact I will say as a statistician I’ve consulted in a lot of different areas of science; the methodology and the controls on these experience are tighter than any other area of science where I’ve worked.”  (source)

The Takeaway: How important is the science of consciousness? How much does it conflict with long held belief systems about us, and our world? Would these truths change the worldview of the collective? Could this then perhaps change how we live in our society?

Exploring topics that deal with mind matter interaction, or in this case the ability of one person to somehow influence another person without any direct physical contact, can and does provide challenges to ones belief systems. That being said, evidence and significant results should not be dismissed or ignored simply because they don’t fit in the accepted framework of our reality.

Studies like this suggest that we are much more than what we’ve been made to believe, and we are capable of a lot more than we know, and also that we still have so much to discover about ourselves.

Understanding human consciousness, and the power of human consciousness, may be the key that is required to unlock solutions to the world’s current challenges. We have to step back and question what type lens are we perceiving and viewing our world from? Perhaps what we are viewing is not what needs to change, maybe it’s the lens we are looking through that does?

new moon in scorpio, horoscopes, 2016, spirituality, consciousness, astrology, astrologer, zodiac

We are having a New Moon in Scorpio on November 15th throughout most of the world and on the night of the 14th in Central to Western North America. This is initiating a 29.5 day lunar cycle and new wave of energy for the coming month; however, the astrological configurations mentioned in this article will be more prominent over the following two weeks.

We are also approaching eclipse season with the upcoming Full Moon of this cycle being a Lunar Eclipse in Gemini on November 30th, followed by a Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14th/15th. Eclipses can reflect beginnings, endings, and evolutionary developments pertaining to the sign it is in and in specific areas of our lives based on our individual astrological blueprints.

The effects of eclipses don’t always fully play out when they are occurring although you can experience things connected to the eclipses strongly in the weeks surrounding them. However, their energies and themes will also manifest sometime in the 6 months following and can begin in the 6 weeks prior. I will be writing separate articles on these eclipse, you can join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive them.

New Moon In Scorpio

Scorpio season began on October 22nd/23rd, just over three weeks prior to this Lunation, and will end on November 21st/22nd when Sagittarius season begins. However, his New Moon will still carry some of its Scorpio themes into the first week of Sagittarius season prior to the Full Moon.

Scorpio is about depth, transformation, power, regeneration, mastery, extremes, sex, and rebirth. It is complex, passionate, intuitive, calculated, mysterious, penetrating, investigative, controlling, driven, observant, intense, and primal. Psychotherapy, deep healing, alchemy, or anything that is esoteric can fall under the domain of this sign as it can be about exploring the hidden aspects of life.

Scorpio is also associated with fears, shadows, death, secrets, envy, manipulation, obsessiveness, vengeance, and savagery. Things like shared resources, shared values, investments, inheritance, as well as taxes, debt, and credit all fall under the domain of this sign.

New Moon Sextile Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn In Capricorn

This New Moon is in a tight sextile to Pluto, Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn. Jupiter and Pluto have been in a strong conjunction over the last week and into the next one. Pluto is associated with Scorpio and this conjunction along with its aspect to the New Moon can amplify the themes of that sign.

This energy can bring powerful changes, transformations, and potentially some sort of death and rebirth experiences for some people. It can be empowering, revealing, and help us to overcome issues or shadows that have hindered us. This can reflect a shift in our beliefs, opinions, and tendencies of excessiveness. Hidden or dark matters may surface or can affect our perspectives. This can be a time of having deeper understandings and realizations. In some cases this can play out as big gains around finances or other resources.

This New Moon is also moving towards a sextile with Saturn in which will also be the Moon’s final aspect before changing signs. This energy is stabilizing, steady, and realistic. This can help bring some practicality amidst the complexity of Scorpio. This is highly supportive for applying ourselves in a disciplined and responsible manner which may potentially be connected to the aftermath of Jupiter-Pluto related experiences mentioned above.

Considering that these planets are in Capricorn, for many people the themes mentioned in this section could be connected to ambitions, business, social status, authority figures, or pursuit of mastery. However, ultimately it depends on how this is all configured to our personal and unique astrology charts based on the time we were born.

Mars is Now Stationary Direct

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio and has ended its retrograde just over 28 hours before this New Moon. It began its retrograde in the 2nd week of September and will be in its post retrograde shadow until early January. In the weeks and days before and after this New Moon, we can experience things that can affect how we should be applying and asserting ourselves in specific areas of our lives. This process will continue over the coming weeks as Mars gradually moves forward at a faster speed which can also increase our momentum in a revised direction or method of applying ourselves.

With Mars in or almost stationary position during the second and third week of November, its themes and expressions can come up strongly. It can play out as anger, frustration, competitiveness, as well as strong masculine or sexual energy. We may also experience a shift connected to those things. I wrote a full article on it a few months ago, you can read it here.

Mercury Opposite Uranus During Post Retrograde Shadow

Mercury ended its previous retrograde on November 3rd/4th and is still in its post retrograde shadow until November 19th/20th. From November 6th/7th and onward until the 19th, we start to have more clarity around some of the issues that have come up since mid-October. We can begin to move forward in a new way based on certain things that have transpired.

Mercury is in an opposition to Uranus from November 16th-17th. This is a period in which we may have to be more flexible due to the potentials of changes, interruptions, and disruptions. Surprises, inconsistencies, accidents, lack of focus, rebelliousness, separation, or communication issues can also play out. This energy can be good for new ideas, stimulating conversations, and insights.

Venus Aligned With Spica While Square Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn

Venus is aligned with the star Spica during this New Moon and in the three days following, however, it also in some hard aspects. Spica is a fortunate star which can bring blessings around Venus issues of love, romance, personal relationships, friends, money, values, pleasures, or things that are aesthetically oriented.

Venus is also in square with the Jupiter-Pluto conjunction on the day of and following the New Moon on November 15th-16th, and less strongly in the day prior to that. At best this can trigger passion, positive change, transformation, growth, strong feelings, empowerment, depth, change in perspective, and perhaps themes of purging around Venus related issues. However, this can also reflect intensity, power struggles, jealousy, manipulation, control, obsessions, hidden agendas, or issues pertaining to shadows in these areas. Jupiter can add excessive energy to these potential manifestations.

Venus then moves towards a square with Saturn which is strong from November 18th-19th. This can play out as obstacles, restrictions, limitations, caution, struggles, and a need to be realistic around Venus areas of life. We may face issues and distance around our relations and it can be harder to connect with others. This can be a good time to reflect on what you need to be doing differently or taking a serious approach to Venus issues.

Making Intentions & Things To Consider

What is coming up for you around this New Moon and in the week leading up to it? What do you need to change about how you apply yourself based on what has transpired in the last few months and especially more recently? What areas of your life are calling for a major change, transformation, or purging? What are your shadows and how can you address them to bring you to a place of greater harmony? What have you been feeling or experiencing when it comes to your sexual expression or relationships and how should you proceed forward? Is there anything that you need to consider or address pertaining to finances, shared resources, debt, credit, taxes, or inheritance?

These are just some examples of what to consider or focus your intentions on at this time. However, it is good to reflect on anything else that is coming up for you. It is generally best to make any intentions within the first 24 hours following a New Moon. The exact moment it will occur is 5:07am Universal Time on November 15th.
